Speed's Hotdog (Now Boston Super Dog) at Charlestown Navy Yard this week

I found Greg's Superdog at Newmarket on Wed. afternoon. The hotdog with the works was delicious but not quite as good as I had from Speed's a couple of years ago. Still really good, though. The hotdog had a nice snap and bite to it and was very tasty. The only downside was the chili was not as good as before and there were no onions. It was still well worth the trip and I was so happy to see the truck there, I had no trouble eating the whole thing.

Looking for a Cape Cod restaurant for a birthday dinner on Jan. 16

What restaurants are open next weekend? We are looking for a nice restaurant between Dennis and Ptown to celebrate a birthday on Jan. 16. If the weather is good, we might spend the afternoon in Ptown so something in the outer Cape would be especially welcome. Our price range is $60 per person, including tax and tip. We are foodies, so we are looking for innovative dishes and food well-prepared. Our first choice was Ocean House, but they are closed. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Mid-Cape Summer 2011: One guy's opinions

We had a very disappointing dining experience at Brewster Fish House this season. I had already had a bad experience a couple of years ago, but my friends insisted they always have loved BFH and insisted on going again. We got there early so there was no wait. The food was a big disappointment -- one dish too salty, the other bland, one fish dish overcooked, all at premium prices. My friends who used to love this place were shocked. No more BFH for us. Ocean House is a favorite, as is Pisces, and we will stick to those when we go out next.

Restaurant with good atmosphere for celebratory dinner with advisor/mentor?

I agree, this is a very classy gesture, and will be appreciated by your advisor. I think Rendezvous is your best bet -- good food, not too small or dark, kind of modern, not too quiet or loud. And they can accommodate vegetarian/vegan requests. Good desserts, as well. Be sure to let us know what you choose and how it goes. Hats off to you!

Lucy Ethiopian Cafe

We tried Lucy last week before a Huntington theatre show. Luckily, there was no show at Symphony that night. We arrived at 6:15 and were seated right away. The owner is very friendly and personable. The restaurant smelled wonderful with the spices in the air. We had the Addis special with red lentils, yellow lentils, and spinach; along with the spicy lega tibs. Everything, including the "spongy bread" was delicious, although the portions of the veggies were smaller than we would have liked. We were finished eating by 7:15 and eager to get the check and leave for the theatre. However, even though we asked for it several times, it did not come. Finally at 7:30, we went to the register and insisted on paying, which we did. We did get to the theatre late and had to be seated upstairs until intermission. So the lesson here is that if you have a curtain time, get to Lucy early, and walk to the register early to pay. We'll be back again--it was probably the best cheap eats dinner we have found around the Symphony area.

Golden Garden

I've been getting takeout from Golden Garden and the food has been delicious. I love their spicy cumin lamb, their dumplings, their noodles, sour cabbage and bacon, and their tofu. It is usually not very full at the restaurant but I think they are getting a good number of takeout orders. Please continue to eat and order from there, as they are super-nice and the food is so yummy and reasonably priced.

Worst of the Cape?

On a more positive note, I have had consistently great fried seafood at Sir Cricket's in Orleans and also delicious three-course meals at Ocean House in Dennis.

Worst of the Cape?

I know there are going to be some who disagree with me, but I have to say that one of the worst meals I have had on Cape Cod occurred at the Brewster Fish House recently. My fish and sides were really , really salty, and when I asked for extra pasta to mix in to make my food less salty, they actually charged me for the extra pasta! I won't be back anytime soon.

Update on Speed's

I agree. I love it with everything and I am small but had no problem eating the whole dog and finishing my soda. YUM!

Moby Dick's kabob sandwiches a disappointment

Having read good reviews on Chowhound of Moby DIck's on Huntington as a neat Boston hole-in-the-wall, we tried it before our play at the BU Theatre across the street. Unfortunately, we have yet to find a place to eat before our plays that we like. Moby Dick's was cafeteria-style--we had one beef kabob sandwich for $7.99 and one swordwich kabob sandwich for about $10.99. The service was quick but the sandwiches were quite small! They were tasty but so small we finished them in two minutes and were still hungry. I could not believe how small they were for the price. By the time we left for the theatre (and to get a breakfast bar from the car to tide us over), Moby Dick's was completely empty at 7:20. Pho and I next door is about average for pho but it is definitely better and more filling for the same price at Moby Dick's Kabobs. We won't be going back there any time soon.

Sol Azteca Brookline

We went to Sol Azteca last week around 5:30, before a Red Sox game. The service was excellent -- attentive, friendly, and quick. The food was pretty good -- chips and salsa were tasty and we got extra when we ran out; the mole was a little sweet but enchiladas were good. I am not a big fan of the cabbage (too sour), but my DC liked it alot. Beer was cold. I would go definitely go back.

Nice Dinner on Cape Cod

I agree that Ocean House in Dennisport is a great choice -- $26 three-course meals are delicious and the service is good.

Buca's Tuscan Grill in Harwich is also reliable and good.

Going to Gargoyle's for first time, any "must try" dishes?

Sounds like I may be a minority voice but I am not a fan of Gargoyles. I am from Hawaii and was excited about their ahi poke, but it was too salty and not even close to delish. Our entrees were OK, nothing special. For the price, I think you can do much better. We have been there twice, probably will not return.

Best Corn Chips (found in Boston area)?

Granolagurl, I know exactly what you mean. I LOVE the Native Kjalii thick-cut chips and have not found anything close in the Boston area. I have been trying to figure out if I can get them sent out to me from the Bay area, maybe from a retailer. Perhaps we can beg Whole Foods or Russo's to carry them? Russo's carries a decent gourmet tortilla chip (can't remember the name) but it can't hold a candle to the Native Kjalii. Let me know if you get the NK chips out here, thanks.

Friday night in Arlington or Belmont

I've been to both Savino's and Il Casale several times, and I think Savino's is superior. It is a quieter and more elegant restaurant, and the food is well-prepared and consistently delicious. The service is also excellent. While the food at Il Casale is good, the place is loud, and the prices higher than Savino's for food and service that is not better. I consider Savino's to be a great neighborhood Italian bistro.

Japanese green tea with roasted rice?

I used to buy this Genmaicha in Hawaii (green tea with roasted rice) but now that I am in Boston, I often order it online. Try googling it and you should be able to find several places that will send it to you.

Tried the Dim Sum at Shangri-La in Belmont

I finally got a chance to try the Taiwanese dim sum at Shangri-la. I was not disappointed. We had four people and we were all impressed. First, the salty soybean "soup" was wonderful -- nicely flavored with tidbits of spicy preserved radish. The sweet soybean drink was also yummy. The turnip cake triangles were just right, with turnip taste, and similar to those my mom used to make for Chinese new year's. The XLB soup dumplings were juicy and tasty, the scallion pancakes also good. A particular favorite was the pan-fried beef bao. We liked everything we ate and will go back again soon. The only down note was the service, which was a bit surly, bordering on rude. If they could only get their service up to the level of the outstanding food, this would be a five-star place.

Favorite dish in Boston area - under $15

The dry-fried beef chow fun at Peach Farm is about $6-7 and probably my favorite ONE dish. I would also consider a Speed's dog with everything for $7 as well.

Speed's Has Added Grilled Pastrami and it's worth a special visit

Still at Newmarket Square in front of Katsiboura's (sp?) Fruit. I got my first Speed's dog last week --YUM!--and saw some folks getting the Pastrami, which looked really good, too. Greg is gregarious --I felt very comfortable sitting on his picnic table eating alone and chatting with Greg and other customers.

Restaurants w/i walking distance of 811 Mass Av (Hampton Inn)

You could easily walk to Estragon, a good tapas place at 700 Harrison Avenue near Boston Medical Center. For lunch, Andre's Cafe at 811 Harrison Avenue, even closer to where you will be, has delicious middle eastern food at good prices.

Shangri-la in Belmont -- what to order?

I know that Shangri-la in Belmont is very popular on this board. I live nearby and I love Chinese food so I want to like it. However, I have eaten there twice in the past two years and had what I thought was mediocre food (fish, tofu, chicken). I want to give it another chance as I would love to have easy take-out or a place to bring friends from my house. My question -- what to order for dinner that is really good and unique to Shangri-la? We do love hot and spicy food, too. Thanks.
