Thanks FourSeasons - hope you are well. Not really a big abalone fan. From the report the uni rice sounds the most delish ;)

Celler de Can Roca - reality intervenes

No harm waitlisting. There's always a chance that someone may cancel at the very last. It's well worth going to, if not this time then the next.

Attire when fine dining in Madrid and Barcelona

Just speaking about my Barcelona experience as we dined in mostly casual restaurants in Madrid. Was there late Sep 2011 and it was a hot beginning of Autumn. I went in shorts, t & trainers to Can Roca and Sant Pau and it was fine. I had slacks on for Can Fabes as I don't think they allow shorts. Barcelona is very casual as is Tickets. I usually make the effort to put on something smarter but it was just too hot and I was already sweating profusely from the walking about all day.

What's the difference between lunch and dinner in terms of the food you get? It looks like lunch is substantially cheaper.

Seoul, Korea - Mugunghwa at Lotte Hotel Seoul, Myeongdong

Nice presentation too. The beef is better than a Japanese yakiniku joint?

You there on hols or for work?

Kuala Lumpur - Home-cooked flavors from Mei Xiang Saltfish Delicacy (美香咸魚飯店)

You back in town already. Haven't been here in years although I remember the pork patty. How was the bitter gourd? - that's always a fave thing for me w salted yolk or with scrambled eggs.

Rome - Reservations needed? (Salumeria Con Cucina Roscioli, La Campana, L'Arcangelo)

I could not get a table in the back room but it did seem raucous. I sat instead at the front near the glass counter where I was entertained by the produce and the man doin' his thing with the burrata. To me, that was more fun than being with the hip crowd.

Kicking off my honeymoon in Rome

Enoteca Corsi gets good reviews in blogs and other online press. I walked in on my visit, looked at the menu, which didn't appeal to me and went to Roscioli instead where I had the Burrata and Carbonara - I'm glad I did!

Paris report Mar 12

You are lucky to be able to get a reservation at Le Comptoir for dinner. I thought it was near impossible unless you stay at the attached hotel.

Ipoh, Malaysia - Local Ipoh Culinary Delights at Thean Chun aka "The Hall of Mirrors"

Same here - only know the Menglembu for groundnuts. Have never understood the appeal of both taugeh chicken stalls - long long queues and so so food. Prefer Ipoh Kway Teow anyday.

Penang-Century Old Hainanese Satay

I was there about a year and a half back. We had choon peah, mushroom soup, inche kabin - can't remember the rest.

On a recent trip, I went to Hainanese Delights which was pretty good although it is pork free.

Which are the other famous Hainanese type places?

Penang-Century Old Hainanese Satay

Yes, Hollywood is still around. The decor seems to be caught in a time warp but it has changed hands and the food is no longer as good.

Ipoh, Malaysia - Local Ipoh Culinary Delights at Thean Chun aka "The Hall of Mirrors"

I was there enroute to Penang, 2 weeks ago. Great stuff huh? The intestine satay is prob the best I've ever had. Ditto for the Ipoh Kway Teow. The popiah is also very good.

Singapore - Sunday Luncheon at Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine

I think generally Malays and Indians have an aversion to chicken skin unless it is KFC. The fried chicken at the mamak stores have no skin nor do most local tandoori chicken. This is just an observation and is not meant to be a racist comment. If there are any Malay or Indian board members reading this, please feel free to correct me.

Please rescue my Roman dining experience!

Maureen, nice list. I agree about La Gensola and although I had fish, found the food pedestrian. It's a pity I missed out on Checchino even though I had reservations as it was a far trek from where I was. Am a big fan of offal....

Kuala Lumpur - Wild Boar Curry & Stuff at Sungai Besi Wanton Mee (新街场路全蛋面)

Hung Kee - that's an old school place.

Questions about Trattoria Cadorna and Costanza in Rome

This is with regards to Cadorna.

It's a late reply but make reservations if you want to go and 8.30 seems fine.

You can get by speaking English.

Yes, those are the charges plus they don't serve tap water but a filtered house water so there will be an extra charge for that as well.

Frankly, the food was only average among all the other meals I had in Rome and the prices are on the higher side - they look low on the menu but when you tack on all the other charges, you could do better I feel. I regret going there instead of Checchino.

Try the torrijas in Holy Week

That's my fave Spanish dessert. When i was in Madrid late last year I noticed a lot of restaurants had it listed on the menu but did not serve it. I guess it is served only near Easter. What's the significance? The only place I could order it was at Arzabal and I went back to have it again.

Kuala Lumpur - Wild Boar Curry & Stuff at Sungai Besi Wanton Mee (新街场路全蛋面)

Haha you've finally made it here. The noodles are more like the HK style more bite (but less than HK) compared to the Malaysian style that I prefer. The char siew is also not too bad. It can get polluted because you are eating right by the highway.

Kuala Lumpur - Hokkien Fried Noodles at Dynasty, Renaissance Hotel

The current location is later. It was behind in a row of shophouses opposite the infamous Choo Cheng Kay mansions for many years from the early 80's. It was somewhere else before that. I haven't been for a few years but it was good the last time I went.

Kuala Lumpur - Hokkien Fried Noodles at Dynasty, Renaissance Hotel

Sure, give me a holler when you feel like going and we'll figure something out. I haven't been to the PJ ones as they are a bit far and my lack of navigational skills are a deterrent.

Do they take walk-ins at Tickets/41 degrees?

No, that would be a silly assumption. I think that if you walk in and they seat you then you can probably order anything you want. My experience was going there for drinks after a meal at Tickets and we had sat there for a while before we saw an interesting dessert at another table and asked about ordering it. They said it was too late and past their food ordering time - which it was. Mind you, this was before the current rejig and the 41 course menu. If you search the board, you will find that some like 41 Degrees as a substitute if they cannot get into Tickets but again this was before the rejig.

Kuala Lumpur - Hokkien Fried Noodles at Dynasty, Renaissance Hotel

I could have told you that. It's behind the ones at Noble House, Reunion or Millenium for the resto/ hotel ilk and definitely behind the trad Hokkien mee stalls.

Do they take walk-ins at Tickets/41 degrees?

They stop serving food after a certain time at 41 deg. Chances of a walk in at Tickets are low but you can always give it a try. If there is nothing, just head to Rias de Galicia which is nearby, for seafood.

Hong Kong - Under the Bridge Spicy Crab

The fried garlic bits also cause gas if too much is eaten....

Itinerary finalization/help Rome

I've only had the oxtail at Cadorna - I went there instead of Checchino as it was easier to get to for me and I had presumed not as expensive. On the latter count I was wrong since they have a surcharge/ service charge which lifts the prices. How does the oxtail there compare to Checchino, for someone who has had the pleasure of both places?

Melbourne pizza -- strong opinion

Try Cumulus (slightly cheaper than Cutler & Co), Anada for tapas, Journal Canteen for Italian, Pope Joan & Birdman Eating for brunch, PM 24 for the pre theatre menu which is good value.

Rome Report - very long

Tiubow

Sounds like you did eat a lot and enjoyed your trip. Sorry to hear about the stomach and that you didn't like Pizzarium. I found it great and liked the oil, as I did Da Remo which was a different experience. The waiters at Da Remo weren't brusque in my experience, they were helpful and slightly cheeky in suggesting what to order - I had the Pizza Da Remo which had a lot of stuff on it but gather they recommend it to foreigners as most other people had simpler toppings.

Barcelona - food recs - hotel near Mercat de la Boqueria

I second the recommendation for Gresca's lunch - very good value indeed for the food you get.

London - Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

Nice review. Will definitely try it the next time I'm in London. am also wondering what Koffman is like now based on Limster's comments. Are you spending Chinese New Year in London?
