Sydney, good cheap eats list

Hah- I definitely won't be going to all of the places listed. I like giving myself a ton of options, because I'll inevitably be in a specific mood in a specific neighborhood at some point. If I have a lot of good choices in each neighborhood, I'll always be able to approximate what I am looking for without taking my chances on an unproven place.

I don't remember where I got that Fix St James rec, to be honest. I could have just written it down incorrectly.

Thanks for the help

Sydney, good cheap eats list

Hi-

Thanks to everyone's help in an earlier post, I've decided to base my Sydney trip out of Darlinghurst. Now I'm composing a list of places to go, by type of food and neighborhood, as a quick reference while I'm wandering around town.

Do you have any suggestions on the below, keeping in mind that my friends and I prefer cheap, hole-in-the-wall places and ethnic restaurants over fancypants wine bars and the like? With that said, I'm still playing with the idea of reserving @ Tetsuya's.

Thanks

Coffee
- Wall (Surry Hills)
- Kawa (Surry Hills)

Steak
- Fix St James (CBD)

Burger
- Rockpool (CBD), expensive
- Plan B (CBD)

Sandwiches/Lunch
- Malibu (Surry Hills)
- Big Bite (CBD)

Pubs
- Lord Nelson's (Rocks)

- Fisherman's Wharf (Pyrmont), walkable from Darling Harbour?
- Fish Mongers (Bondi), Fish n Chips

Pizza/Italian
- Lucio (Darlinghurst)
- Mario (Surry Hills)
- Gelbisons (Bondi)

Indian/Southeast Asian
- Spice I Am (Surry Hills), Thai

Which neighborhood to stay in (Sydney)? Pubs, cheap eats, public transport

Wow--thanks for all of the detail. I'm definitely not opposed to spending some time at the beach. I'm also going to Cairns. You don't think it would be redundant to stay at Bondi, do you?

Which neighborhood to stay in (Sydney)? Pubs, cheap eats, public transport

Thanks, everyone. So it sounds like Surry/Potts/Newtown/Darlinghurst are all at least viable options; and I can split my time up and stay in 2 out of those 4.

I'm not familiar with the scope of the city (again, something that the guidebooks don't explain very well). Are all of these (except for Newtown, I assume) pretty walkable from/to the city's center?

Also- do you guys have something along the lines of a yelp.com for Sydney?

Thanks again

Which neighborhood to stay in (Sydney)? Pubs, cheap eats, public transport

Hi-

I'll be visiting in November, staying in Sydney for roughly a week. What neighborhood (or two--I don't mind jumping around a little) would you suggest for someone like me? I'm 26, from NY, and am looking for local/ethnic places (including things I couldn't find in NYC), cheaper mom & pop restaurants, pubs rather than overly dressy clubs, and all-hours transportation to/from night life.

This is almost a general tourism question, except that food/drinks and access thereto are a huge priority for me. I've done quite a bit of research--and Darlinghurst and Potts Point seem like pretty reasonable choices--but the books I have leave a bit to be desired. I can't seem to get a feel for the neighborhoods.

Thanks

Can the alleged mozzarella topping on certain pizzas even be called cheese?

i was operating under the assumption that there was a big difference between aged mozz and wisconsin cheese

Have Elk and Economy candy shops both closed?

i wasn't paying attention when i walked by economy candy today, but i probably would have noticed if it had closed down.

What else to get at Shopsin's?

That's the one. It's incredible.

And that's the correct menu, as well. I must have been looking at an old copy (not the original huge one, though).

What else to get at Shopsin's?

under "tex-mex breakfast", there's a dish comprising eggs, garlic toast, potatoes, and fried bbq pork. i forget the exact name (it's not on the online menu) but it was amazing.

the bbq pork is balled up and fried, coming out like a falafel. doused in hot sauce, and with a side of slutty cakes, it was probably the best breakfast i've ever had.

i would go with castles + tasty 2 (half order if you're not sure you can handle both).

What else to get at Shopsin's?

The other recent Shopsin's thread was a good read, and definitely has me wanting to go back; but it's becoming more of a discussion about policies & service than about the food.

I've tried some of the more popular dishes (most of the pancakes, sliders, blisters on my sisters), and I have a few on the list for future visits (chicken tortilla avocado soup, taco fried chicken).

What are some of the sleeper picks, though?

Also, has anyone tried the donuts or orange julius? I'd be curious to read your opinions.

Thanks

Shopsin's still good?

i wouldn't. that pancake plate (tasty 2, iirc) is bangin though. go tuesday and save the slutty for wednesday. you can also get half-orders.

if you have a huge appetite, you should be able to do 2 entrees in one go. i've done it a few times without trouble. they used to tell me i was getting too much, but i think they're used to my orders by now.

Burger Burger in FIDI

I know. I've gotten the side salad before, but it's a joke. Neither of those options appeals to me. Vendetta continues.

Burger Burger in FIDI

It's on Coenties & Stone, and you'd have trouble finding it from Pearl if you didn't know better.

Their burgers are pretty good, but I hate that they make you get fries with it. If they had a burger-only option, I would go way more often. Even if it only reduced the cost by 25 cents--it's a matter of principle for me.

LA-style chili (Tommy's, Cupid's), in NY??

sorry you went all the way up there and didn't get exactly what you were looking for.

hubbas' is hands-down the best topping chili i've ever had, so i'm surprised. maybe it's a regional thing. i will have to order some tommy's though, to see what it's all about.

That sounds a lot like Pat's Hubba Hubba in Port Chester.

This pic is not from the original location, but it shows a close up of Hubba's-style chili:

I can't seem to find any pics of the original place. Here is a knock-off that supposedly opened up down the street (the pic is a pool of grease floating on top of a vat of chili):

It looks gross, but I'm not the only one that swears by the stuff.

I don't really have any borders, per se. It's just a tougher sell the further a place is from UES. Are these places in SI accessible via public transportation?

And thanks for not spelling it "marron'".
