perogies in Edmonton

Does anyone have a secret perogy dealer in Edmonton that has homemade perogies like baba used to make? I've tried the ones at the Mundare sausage house and while much better than cheemo's, they dont hold a candle to what granny used to make. The best ones I have found so far are from the ladies at St. Andrews church on 75 st. I was driving by one day and saw a sign about perogy dinner tonight.....stopped by, and got some to go. Pretty good, but you cant exactly get them anytime you want.

I would appriciate any suggestions.
Thanks

Best breakfast joints in Western Canada

A litle known place in Edmonton is Hathaway's Diner. Its small and homey and everything is homemade. There is usually a wait at the door, but its quick - and well worth it.

Nice, Big, Meaty Dinner... But... (Calgary)

Then that's a definite plus about Bolero - there is the option. And the vegetarian options were pretty good, if I recall. Tho I may have been too busy enjoying all that meat to really notice...

I will have to have to check that out the next time we visit Calgary! My only complaint about Bolero was that it was too big...

When I am craving meat in Calgary - I go to Bolero. Its all you can eat of the best meat there is (waiters walk around with skewers of meat and carve it at your table), and it comes with a salad bar and a hot side buffet as well. You can get just the salad, or the salad and sides or all of the above. It is really, very good food, and a different experience. I'm sure your colleagues would be impressed.

Best Pizza in Edmonton?

I would agree about Dallas Pizza. I live near there, and have been numerous times. It's very similar to Royal Pizza, which I also love. Those would be my 2 favorites of that style; more hearty.

As for the thin crust, I havent had much luck with that here. I've been to Tony's, and was very dissapointed. So much hype, yet the pizza tasted old, and the service was the worst I can remember having anywhere! They're not getting a second chance after that.

Ragazzi on whyte is pretty good though, although I always find with thin crust that I could eat a $20 pizza by myself. Once I push past the cheap scottsman in me, it's pretty tasty!

However, I cant imagine anything comparing to NYC pizzas. The worst pizza I had there was better than the best i've had here. We're going there in the spring again, and John's is on our list, and we plan on getting to Grimaldi's and Lombardi's as well this time. Cant wait.

Modern Wedding Cake - Edmonton

My family uses Cakes by Janna for all occasions (including my wedding). It was beautiful, tasty and very reasonably priced

Tasty Tom's- Edmonton

Anyone been to tom's lately? We used to go quite often, but we felt the quality was really slipping so we quit going. The burgers had that just from the freezer section of the supermarket taste and texture to them.... miles from their usual great homemade burgers. Not to mention the portions got smaller and the price got way bigger. Tom never seemed to be there in the kitchen whenever we went. It's been a couple years since we've been, and we're hoping someone can tell us that they've got things back on track.

Jasper

I cant help but notice of all the pizza reccomendations, nobody has mentioned North Face Pizza..... I havent been to Jasper for a few years, but that was always the first place we'd stop when we pull into town. Is it not there anymore, or gone downhill or something?

YEG-The Hat: Formerly known as The Silk Hat Dinner; have you been?

I used to swear by the burgers (well, pretty much anything, really) at Tom's - but the last couple of times that I was there, the burger was frozen patty, not the usual homemade. It was very disappointing. I have found that, in general, the quality has gone down at Tom's and he doesn't seem to be around much.
Let me know if it has swung back around. I miss that place!

Onion Rings in AB

I agree - the rings at Delux are the best I've tried! They use beer batter made from Stella Artois. Definitley my favorite

Quality goat cheese in Edmonton

Does anyone know where I can get a good quality goat cheese in Edmonton? the stuff you get at superstore had little flavor. I tried one from safeway once too..... it was a little better.
If you've ever had the goat cheese spinach salad at The Red Ox Inn, you know what I'm looking for! (or the beet salad at D-Lux burger bar)

Thanks!

Recent resto closures - Edmonton

used to go to Tasty Tom's religously and send everyone I know there. A year or 2 ago, it seemed to a few of us that the quality was starting to slip. The burgers seemed to be frozen patties instead of their usual great homemade ones. The portions seemed to get smaller, and the prices much bigger. It wasnt the deal it once was. It didnt look like Tom was there in the kitchen too much anymore. I really hope someone can tell me all this has changed, and that Tom's is back on track, because we miss that place!

Hardware Grill - Edmonton

I would take the Red Ox Inn over any other fine dining in the city. That is the one restoraunt that I know I can have anything on the menu and it will be fantastic.

Edmonton near Coast Plaza

There is a great panini place on 104st just north of Jasper ave called Free Press Bistro. Good sandwiches and home-made fries/chips. Very reasonable prices. They are also part of the downtown dining week

Saturday Brunch in Edmonton

Urban is always a good choice. The restaurant in the Union Bank Hotel is also very good (and not many people know about it).
My favorite pick for Saturday morning is tiny diner in the west end (132 st & 132 ave) called Hathaway's Diner. Its a husband and wife team (he cooks, she serves) and its all around great. The food is great and its always served with a smile by a host who knows when your "new" and remembers you when you return (which you will). Its always busy, and can take awhile to get your order taken, but once it is, the food comes out quick.
The only downside is that they close at 4pm, and they do catering as well, so often close even earlier to accomodate that.

for value, I'm not sure you can beat Matahari on Jasper and 124st. Entrees $10. If you like south east asian that is. Not usually that busy during the week.

Sunday Brunch in Edmonton

If you're looking for a buffet style brunch, the Sawmill at Capilano was not bad... we went last weekend. Also, LaBoheme has a brunch where you order a main from the menu, and help yourself to croissants, salad, fruit, and desserts. $20. We've always enjoyed that one.
