Throwdown with Bobby Flay staged?

I can't see a basis for these comments. As others have said, Flay is always gracious, lavishing praise on his hosts' culinary creations. And although he usually seems interested in doing battle, he has appeared genuinely upset by a few wins. The coconut cake was one (but I do think his cake looked a million times better - the hometown chef created a butter bomb). However, the episode that stands out for me was the falafel throwdown with the chef from Taim. He added a bit at the end, filmed apart from the actual throwdown, in which he flat out said, the judges made a mistake: go eat the falafel at Taim.

Sunnyside Pizzeria

I'm shocked no one else has posted about this place. I haven't gone in because it's so tiny, and there doesn't appear to be seating. Still, I'm very curious. Decent pizza in the 'hood would be a miracle.

Uncle Nick's - what to order?

I always get the swordfish kebabs. Delicious.

Pete's Grill in Sunnyside, is this still good?

I've only ordered from there once, some sort of chicken wrap. They placed avocado next to warm grilled chicken, which made the avocado melt: horrible. Also, dry chicken, winter-orange tomato. I realize this is just one experience, but not a good one. I don't see all the fuss about good prices either - these seem the usual; in other words, everything costs a little more than it should.

Pronouncing "bain marie"?

I'm with Merriam-Webster's ("ban"). This is the vowel sound that follows the French, and it's the pronunciation I've always heard.

What's The One Thing You Can't Eat, even for money.

Same here: eggs. Blue cheese as well.

Does anyone remember this candy bar?

There's now M&Ms Premiums in Triple Chocolate. I haven't found these yet, but I'm intrigued.

Sunnyside - The Fruitless Search For A Decent Slice of Pizza

I was pretty jazzed on Mediterraneo a few years ago - the chicken and broccoli pizza was especially good. In recent trips, I've seen a dip in quality, although I agree that the crust is the closest you'll find to real crust in this area. I disagree about the sauce, though - not tasty.

Just this week I, too, expanded my search, ordering a plain pie from Rosario's. The thinness of the crust and the crust-sauce-cheese ratio were all perfect; the flavors, however, were not, with only the cheese earning taste points. Still, all in all, not a bad slice - for Sunnyside.

Rice pudding at El Shater, Sunnyside

Any idea if these puddings contain eggs?

Sunnyside Salads

New York City Eats doesn't get a lot of respect on this board, but its salads are really fresh and good. I ordered a Sicilian last week - baby spinach, fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers, asparagus, avocado, and capers. Delicious. My only complaint was with the peppers, which were jarred, but otherwise a great salad.

Sunnyside - The Fruitless Search For A Decent Slice of Pizza

Have you tried Turkish Grill, three blocks down? I've always liked it much better than Mangal (I too repeat myself in saying this), although it's more of a sit-down place. The bread is so good, I could eat it all day long.

Sunnyside Taco Truck

Oh, I see. Give it a shot, then - who knows, it might be OK.

Sunnyside Taco Truck

The good one is on the corner of 41st and Queens Blvd. I think the hours are something like 7:30 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. Good chicken tacos. Be sure to ask for "pickles" (picked jalapenos and carrots - hot! excellent!). There's another truck that parks on 46th, between Queens Blvd. and Greenpoint Ave., but other posters have said it's not worth trying.

Alpha Donuts - Change in...something???

How can this be? Why in the world wouldn't they have him train someone before he left? I am in serious doughnut mourning.

Does anyone remember this candy bar?

It's July now, and they're still - or again - out of stock. Unfortunate; this looks like it could be a nice substitue.

Does anyone remember this candy bar?

This looks good, but I only see it on sites based in Australia and New Zealand.

favourite mail-order food

That's too bad - sorry you didn't like them. I do think they're special, but they're a different taste from Thomas's, etc.

Dee Thai - Sunnyside

I'm sorry to disagree with everyone, but I just ordered a lunch special - chicken tom yum soup and pad kee mow - and it was foul, the worst Thai I've ever eaten, and horrible by any standard.

Everyday Food PBS

I recently started watching Everyday Baking. I'm not a novice baker, but even so, the guy is good at explaining how to make things I would otherwise be too intimidated to try (like, umm, pastry . . . ). Most of the recipes seem to yield beautiful baked goods.

Sunnyside's least-discussed serious chow option

As I've mentioned in other posts, I too am a fan of the pies - the spinach and the chicken especially. The pastry isn't wonderful, but the fillings are good and plentiful, and you can't beat the prices. I wasn't as pleased with a chicken kebab sandwich, however - dry pita, not very tasty filling and sauce. Maybe it was a bad day, I don't know. I've never had any of the specials, only because they generally contain red meat. But my favorite thing at El Shater is the packaged, imported butter cookies filled with dried fruit. The date are amazing.

Turkey Dinner

I'll be out of the country on Thanksgiving, and I am wildly craving the turkey dinner I am going to miss (watching all those turkey specials on the Food Network hasn't helped). Does anyone know where to get a homemade, homestyle turkey dinner (yearlong)?

Good Cupcakes in NYC

I couldn't wait to try Sage after reading this thread. Sadly, I see they close at 4:00 on weekdays and are not open on weekends. I live in Sunnyside and work in Manhattan, so I guess I'm out of luck!

Good Cupcakes in NYC

Sugar Sweet Sunshine makes a very good Red Velvet.

The frosting at Cupcake Cafe tastes like wax.

Iced tea from Dunkin Donuts: good news for New Enland

I never noticed a coffee taste, but obviously that would be terrible.

The paper cups don't bother me, but I have friends who won't drink hot coffee at Starbucks for the same reason.

I didn't know Wendy's has iced tea. I'm in NYC now, but I'll have to check this out.

Iced tea from Dunkin Donuts: good news for New Enland

Have you tried the iced tea at Au Bon Pain? It's tasty, and when I lived in Boston (admittedly, this was a while ago), you could get a good-sized (about the equivalent of a DD medium) cup for a buck. And, let me hasten to add, there's always a tray of lemon slices for the taking.

Spumoni?? (Other than Dreyer's....)

Yes, it looks amazing, as it should: $200 for eight pints! Wow!

Tabasco or will another hot sauce so?

I like the new Frank's Red Hot Xtra Spicy.

Woodside/Sunnyside suggestions? (eating out AND delivery)

Wow, I wonder if that person makes the desserts too. I haven't had it in a while, but when I did, their baklava was the best I've eaten - and I've eaten a lot of baklava.

Woodside/Sunnyside suggestions? (eating out AND delivery)

Another vote for Turkish Grill. Great chicken adana kebabs, and I could eat their bread all day long.

Le Pain Quotidien--- How do they do it?

OK, I just looked this up: there's like nine thousand of these places in NYC, and I've somehow missed them all. Yikes.
