Which comes first, the heat or the oil?
I gently warm any pan on low for a few min before adding the oil. I add the oil to a warm pan then turn up the heat and then cook. This is more of a safety issue for me. I want to be near the pan and not finnishing my prep work as the oil heats.
What's the most overpriced menu item you've seen?
In Regina Sask, $22 for a personal pizza at a local pub
Dissapointing Dinner at Friends House
I went to visit a friend in another city for a couple of day,s a few years ago, and was served canned soup with rice in it for every meal (No breakfast) I took said friend out for a nice pub style dinner. I don't expect the moon from someone who does not cook, but at least pick up some fresh fruit.
Do you have a favorite I'm-alone-now-so-nobody-will-know favorite dish?
Me too! I add a pinch of good curry powder to the flour dredge
Spain had a HUGE impact on its colonies' cuisine. Why didn't France?
Also what about Creol and Acanadien cooking?

What about the food of Quebec and the rest of french speaking Canada? They have a rich tradition of French cooking
Eating well, while being poor.
I keep a list of my basics on the fridge, pasta, rice, canned tomatoes/sauce, peanut butter, onions, potatoes, carrots, beans, oil, garlic, butter, canned tuna, eggs
When ever any of these are on sale I stock up and in a 6 week period all of these items will go on sale at least once
My secondary list is Hot sauce, celantro, cheese, peppers, citrus, apples, crackers, jam, bacon, popcorn, chicken boulion
After picking up what I need from list one, I move onto list two
After that if I still have some $ in my budget I buy a treat, usually a chocolate bar. You will notice no meat on here, I'm not a vegetarian, but I can get all my protein from fish, beans, eggs etc. and I eat a nice steak or chicken on very special occations. I also do not buy milk as I can live without it quite well. I keep some canned milk on hand if I need it for a recipe.
Minestrone Soup is one of my favorate go-to meals. I can make enough to feed me for a week on less than $10, and paired with some day old sour dough bread from the bakery it makes a complete protein.
When I am really broke I always have a potato to bake, or a bowl of pasta with garlic and butter. Stocking up on your flavorings when you can makes a big difference. Having a jar of pesto to toss with the pasta, or some hot sauce for the fried rice.
Some canned pears and peaches bought on sale can be a great comfort and help a sugar craving. Oh and I do not deny myself chocolate.
Brillat-Savarin's Tuna Omelet Has anyone ever tried to make this?
In "The Physiology of Taste" translated by MFK Fisher, Brillat-Savarin gives the recipe for a Tuna Omelet (Page 352). I've never heard of such a thing and was wondering if anyone had ever tried this and what the results were.
Someone please extoll the virtues of electric stoves
Personaly I love gas, that said, in my last house the propane tank was a 300lb and cost about $250 to fill. You had to call the gas company a week ahead to get a fill appointment, so if I ran out, I was out of gas for a good week.
I live in a rural area and gas is nice in a blackout.
What was the first thing you learned to make?
I think it was Jello or maybe instant pudding. My Mom always included us in the kitchen (Unless she was deep frying, then we had to get out) I also remember learning to make playdough, salt, oil, flour, food colouring.
ISO Best darn Meatloaf EVER...PERIOD!
Yes, I tried this last night. So good that I had a piece for breakfast.
Natto soba
I remember you taking me to SobaTen. You introduced me to such great new foods
Am I the only one who lives in a magic house? A lighthearted look at ourselves & food safety
I took a food safe course a few years ago when I was working in a restaurant. I sterilize my kitchen a few times a week with warm water, soap and a bit of bleach. It only takes moments to do and gives me peace of mind. I should also say that I live on the ocean and the humidity level here increases the chance of mildew, so I have to bleach my kitchen sponges every few days anyways.
Why do people like box cake better than homemade?
I just love DAD bakers, they are the best
Why do people like box cake better than homemade?
Thank-you for that advice Mrs. Smith!
Why do people like box cake better than homemade?
I so agree! and I would love to taste your baking
What is the best wedding cake you've ever had?
My sister Laura had a wonderful cheese cake wedding cake
Canned Banana Bread
Thanks for the replies. To mtomto, I was hoping to include canned bread in gift baskets. My mom cans almost everything including a really good coleslaw. Maybe it is a prairie thing. It is about hoarding food. If you can figure out a way to keep something for a long time, that's a "good thing"
Canned Banana Bread
I saw on TV years ago a guy who baked banana bread in glass canning jars and sealed them as they came out of the oven. Does anyone have a recipe for this?
Why didn't my sweet potato fries get crispy??!!
Do you have a gas oven? one of the bi-products of propane combustion is water. It is a wet heat and can prevent crisping.
TO chowhound researching Vancouver chow during Vancouver 2010
The Eatery on Broadway for sushi. Excellent food, funky decor
Time to ditch the graphic of the bacon-wrapped turkey. Please!
THANK-YOU. I don't know what it is, but I find it disturbing!
Strange Pairings that Taste Uncommonly Good
Peanut Butter and Jam on toast with ceddar cheese on top and put under the broiler. A yummy comfort food.
Most disgusting taste (of normal foodstuffs)
My ex dislikes fish of all kind and I love it. I decided to test the theory and took him to the best sushi restaurant in Vancouver (A city which has some of the best Sushi outside of Japan) He did not like it. He just does not like fish, cooked or raw.
What did your Mom always have on hand, that you NEVER do?
My mom grew up with all this cold war NASA type food, but was also a very good cook. We grew up with a lot of canned foods, but not overly processed, ie: Tuna, tomatoes, salmon etc. It was a prairie thing, hoarding food. If my dad does not have 5 pounds of butter in the freezer he is running low. Now in retirement Mom and Dad are all about whole foods and organic. Mom worked as a cancer researcher and is worried about all the chemicals that 3 generations of North Americans put into themselves in the name of Progress
Family foods I thought was normal
We always had Apple Pie with a slice of good cheddar cheese and cream poured over it. It's a British thing
Do you have a favorite I'm-alone-now-so-nobody-will-know favorite dish?
I've been known to drain a can of plum tomatoes, add some chopped garlic, red onion, olive oil salt and pepper. Ready in 2 min
Things I ate/drank in college that I will never eat again
The "BIG" muffins from Costco
had one in my lunch every day for years
Yuck
