Make Your Own Girl Scout Cookies

By refusing to buy from the girls, you are missing the whole point of having them do the cookie sale. Besides making money for troop activities, the product sales teach the girls leadership skills, dealing with the public, safety, public speaking, budgeting and planning and a host of other skills and experiences, like working towards goals, doing the work to get what you want. Yes, it is true, that some of the money goes to keep the offices running, but those offices provide program and supplies and troop oversight, as well as training for the leaders. The Girl Scout movement provides extensive training for anyone who will have contact with other people's children. We should be thankful for that. When was the last time you heard of a Girl Scout leader (male or female) molesting their young charges?

Enough with the Workplace Candy!

A person who is trying to stay away from sweets that others bring in can themselves that it belongs to someone else. So that if your food willpower deserts you, your honesty willpower can take over.

best soft drink ever

Polar brand makes clear birch beer, I just saw some at Hannaford last night., and for those who don't know, it is flavored like checkerberry or wintergreen. The one that reminds me of root beer is Sarsaparilla ("sassparilla") I like Moxie, too

Peanut Butta Cups

My peanut butter cup recipe does not call for graham crackers, so I have never made them that way, but the comments about the saltiness factor have me remembering a recipe for pb fudge that called for the crumbs of one sleeve (22) crushed Saltine crackers and I am so tempted to try that in place of the graham crackers. As for the chocolate coating, I have always just melted chocolate chips.

What do you put in your Ham Salad?

I have always found "real" ham to be too salty in ham salad, whether I used the deli sandwich type ham or a ham that I baked or boiled myself. So, my fall-back position is canned luncheon meat (Spam type) with the fat scraped off-(I know,I know!). You mash that with a potato masher and add a mixture of half mayo and half homemade green tomato relish, not a cucumber pickle in sight, 'cause I can't stand 'em.

Grandma's Brownies

If you are doing this one in a metal pan, try lining the pan with foil with a 2 inch overhang for handles. They should come right out whole after chilling and you can cut them on the foil. This recipe is similar to one I found in Elinor Klivens Bake and Freeze cookbook, and the foil overhang thing was in her directions.

Casual Quick lunch in Portsmouth NH

Cafe Espresso is a favorite of the locals. I was directed there by the staff at Anchorage Inn and Suites. It is open for breakfast and lunch and I recommend it for the parameters you have listed. It is on Islington Street in the Plaza mall.

Cheesy Baked Rice

This sounds really good, but I thought I was going to see something like the cheese rice used as a nest for the shrimp creole in the Ill. Enc. of American Cooking. I have been making that one for years. It is very tasty, as well, but not quite as "gourmet" as this one. I will try this one for sure. Thanks for sharing.

Baby on Board, Drink in Hand

I can certainly agree that light drinking only, and totally non-smoking are the more educated and intelligent choices.

I agree with you Seltzer, about her harming her unborn child, but there is nothing anyone can do about it. Remember, that new little person's body is hers to do whatever she wants to with, even having him/her killed, right up til the day s/he is born, in fact right up until the head is delivered. If the feet are delivered first, her "choice" ends when the navel is visible outside the body. They don't call it "partial birth" for nothing!

Lobster Rolls

I just checked the best local place I know for lobster rolls, delivered. At the Korner Store in Oakland, Maine, a large lobster roll is 17.95, plus tax. They will make it with or without mayo or lettuce or order "light" on either of those. It comes in an Italian sandwich roll and consists of all knuckle and claw meat, no minced up filler stuff. It costs 9.95 plus tax for one about half that size.
