Stone Flats...anyone been?

In Scripps Ranch, the whole interior is gutted, with a sign on the door, thanks for 16 months, adding unfortunately there wasn’t enough traffic at that location and that they were moving to Encinitas.

Do you do the pan flip?

I do not.

Why would I want my food on the floor? :)

San Diego Vacation - Where To Eat?

If you might like steak and steak stuffs as you mentioned Ruth's Chris you might want to check out Cowboy Star. I haven't been personally I can't believe it but always seems to get love here with Hounders.

Nothing Bundt Cakes?

They have had a location for 4 or 5 years in the Scripps Ranch / Poway area at the intersection of Pomerado and Scripps Poway Parkway. I’ve had their cakes numerous times. Always a big hit at work. The small ones are nice!

I’ve never personally been in the store so I don’t know if the cakes are baked onsite. I think that location was the second store for the company after the original in Vegas after they started franchising.

Restaurant Week question

Thanks kar! Nice to see Cohn get a little love.

Elephant ear! On a restaurant menu! I love it! A traditional midwestern county fair classic!

Restaurant Week question

Anyone go anywhere?

I can't imagine that a CHer regular would even admit to it. Still... The "extended" 2nd week ends tonight and I was just looking at the list to see if there was any place that would be great to go to...

Table 926

Yeah, but it has 926 chairs.

Haaaaaaa! *cough*

Not really: http://www.table926.com/gallery

Yummy, casual places like Urban Solace that are new to me?

With time off these next week or so I'm trying to think of places that the two of us might want to have lunch or dinner at that could be new or just new to us that doesn't start with Link or El or Arby.

Around $35 or $50 for two, for food. Little more if it's dinner, I suppose. From North Park to Coronado to Encinitas to RB / Poway or inbetween. I guess maybe we should try the newish Moonlight Solace up there. Stone is an option, Slater's 50/50 or other burger joints too or non-burger burger joints too.

Leroy's in Coronado, is that something?

Toss me some names! (And Merry Everything, everyone!)

Moving to North County, need restaurant recommendations

I think most everyone remembers that once upon a time, Luc’s was a "sister" restaurant to Cavaillon to the point that some food was prepped in the Cavaillon kitchen and brought over. I’m sure I’ve heard this about the short ribs. Now that Chef Philippe has sold and left Cavaillon I’m not sure what this all means for Luc’s.

We were at Luc’s this summer, I believe the manager position was just in transition then, and I did overhear the old manager tell another table that nothing would change, the recipes are here, someone else will follow the recipes….

I thought, hmm, okay, but…

Might as well mention Yanni's Bistro, out on Scripps Poway Parkway at Pomerado behind the Carl's Jr. There is a bundt cake place there too and a few other eateries. Very short drive from Poway Rd. or PQ.

And the Original Pancake House near Target for breakfast.

As our own RB Hound has mentioned, House on the Hill is gone. Gone, gone, gone and replaced by The ALL-NEW Terrace Restaurant and Bar run by the property owners (they also own the Ramada hotel right on that corner.)

Article has the details…

Poway Road is generally locally owned restaurants. Not much gets written on CH or any newspaper but there are lots of Y**p (rhymes with kelp) reviews out there. Luc’s Bistro has had love over the last few years here, newish Company Kitchen and Pub is near whatever car dealerships are left in business yet, there are a number of sushi joints, The Brig (local chain, maybe I shouldn't mention) is out there and I’ve always thought someone should do a review of the drive-thru taco shops on Poway Rd.

Two exits south you have the Mira Mesa / Scripps Ranch Trader Joe’s complex and there are a few newer restaurants: Kappa Sushi, Fish Boutique (nice!) and a burger and beer joint (lots of craft taps) called Bruski’s. A little further into the “heart of Scripps Ranch” is La Bastide.

I do hope someone else can mention the hidden gems. (I do think that you could have Inland North County in the subject line as I think North County more refers to the area Del Mar / Solana Beach and north.) But what do I know!

any good restaurants in North Park of San Diego?

You have an excellent post from zmir, also check out the 30th street website:

http://30thstreet.org/

It gives you all the links north to south of the restaurants and bars along with the once in a while blog postings.

Triple D Visits. Hits and Misses.

Hodad’s in Ocean Beach (San Diego), I don’t remember if it was before or after DDD, there wasn’t a line which can be a problem, but it was a weekday lunch. I think the place is just fine for burgers and shakes. They love their bacon! Fun place and people I suppose and a half block from the ocean. I know SD Hounders hate, HATE!, this place with a passion. I think there was some love at one time… It’s a hit for me.

Studio Diner in San Diego. It’s a diner. Been a couple of times, mostly before DDD. Never an absolute hit but not terrible.

Brewburgers in Omaha, NE. Found it after staying across the street at a hotel on a cross-country drive. Real tasty menu and at that time a big mix of martinis for not much $. It’s right off I-80. We just happened on it probably using a “what is nearby” smart phone map app a few years ago. There was a sign on the door that Guy and DDD would be there the next week to film. So that definitely was a BEFORE DDD. Hit. But then what’s terrible when you’ve been driving all day?

Texas Pride BBQ outside of San Antonio, TX. We searched this one out. Seems like they are doing the right thing and the place is appropriately Texas BBQ-y. We had BBQ a few times on that trip, I think here the meat was better than the BBQ sauce. Still a hit with me.

I don’t remember any others. I do like the show a lot – especially when featuring solid from scratch cooking and Mom/Pop shops doing the right thing and making interesting food.

Did Your Mom Repeatedly Cook a Dish You Despised?

Was there ever a thought by anyone in nearly two decades, Hey! Let's toss one of those meatloaves in the oven! Or Hey! There is that old meatloaf!

The CHEW

I watched a few of the Thanksgiving week episodes. Quite good, I thought. But I didn't hate it to start with. And they had some Muppets on one day. (Well, they were EVERYWHERE promoting the movie.)

And the food! Mmm!

Clinton even had a chance to do a quickie critique of the outfits brave audience members as they lined up for judgment. (He’s the cohost of a What Not To Wear program.)

Craving me a slice of pie...

Nice!

The Pie Truck idea is still up for grabs though, right? She didn't say anything about a truck? That serves pies. Out of a truck.

What are you making for Thanksgiving Eve?

Your big dinner BEFORE the big dinner?

OR are you going out? It kicks off the big 4 day weekend for some (or most) and it's probably a short work day too.

I think it's a perfect time for something a little extra versus a normal start of a weekend.

Gabardine!!

You can't make this stuff up! (Why even try!!)

Maybe it will be GabarDINE?

Top Chef Texas - Season 9 - debuts on Wed., November 2nd!

**He made Marcel Vigneron look humble.**

You called that last one. Poor guy though. Didn't get to plate. Nothing in a pan, bowl, nothing...

Dining at Burlap!

Great review, prez!

We were there on a Sunday night in August, it was reasonably fully busy but no parking issues. I have no problem with the location or the setting at the corner of a shopping center. I certainly wouldn’t call it a complete failure.

I kinda see the place as a higher-end mix of Claim Jumpers and PF Wangs and of course (as you’ve admitted) not to be confused with fine dining. Entering and going through the restaurant, I was reminded of the time John Travolta in Pulp Fiction goes to the big 50’s movies retro restaurant with Uma and he’s half in a daze with perplexed wonderment.

I’ll pop in there sometime again, I want to get my knock-your-socks-off meal too! I was a just little disappointed with the food as I remember, but it had to do a little more with the items we ordered. All share plates. 3 items that were covered in a slightly similar brown glop: duck wings, beef cheeks and Korean BBQ riblets. All pretty good on their own, but 3 plates in a row like this? Again, that’s our fault. We did have a tuna thing done 2 ways in the mix too.

On a sidenote, we were outside and the guy at the next table (totally true story!) had some sort of problem with the service or management or something and started "F’ing" that and "F’ing" this and ended up leaving pretty abruptly with his family. There goes stevewag23, I thought. (I kid, I kid!)

Unique San Diego Food?

Anything new in the last (almost) 3 years?

Best restaurant desserts?

Yeah, I’ll second those recommendations, well, Urban and Bankers Hill. Haven’t been to Eddie V’s

The Linkery has been good too - mmm, there was an chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwhich thing that I remember. Current menu doesn’t have that, but it’s an idea. And there isn’t anything saying that you can’t have dinner AND dessert and then go another spot for TWO MORE desserts. :)

Ben & Jerry's Schweddy Balls in SD yet?

Probably not. I haven't seen it. And I've looked. A little.

Who can resist?

Celebrate the Craft SD

It's coming up this weekend again. I hadn't been yet - might try it this year. Always read great reports. Seems a little too classy for me. :)

San Diego New Places Opening Thread, Part Deux

Well, you can’t go wrong with good old-fashioned Midwestern sensibilities. You can’t! Though I think you’d all be doubly crabby about options in a small Midwestern town - though there can be gems.

I have enjoyed following this thread today, esp. JP and DD.

Busalacchi Speaks

Are your reviews gone gone or were they dumped to the filtered reviews?

Your assessment of the more things to do seems spot on.

Is there a restaurant that caters ONLY to the "going to the beach" crowd? Takeaway gourmet picnic baskets maybe at the $20 to $25 price point per person with a variety of snackers? Then plus wine. Oh wait, no wine.

Cavaillon

Anybody been? We were there a couple of weeks ago. This is a spot we’ve enjoyed over the years including a couple of tasting menus plus brunch a couple of times, of course. Seems like the pricing has been upped by maybe 20% or $5 to $8 with most entrees starting at the low $30’s but maybe I’m wrong. But the portion sizes are pretty big too so I guess it works out. Just got a starter to share and two entrees (duck and veal schnitzel) and dessert - that was the same as honkman had in summer looking back at that post and the honkblog. Lava cake thing with ginger ice cream in a bowl of chocolate soup. Yeah, that was tasty.

Honestly, we were a little disappointed overall just in a well, it’s not the same. I hesitate to even say that here because it was one visit of just a few items on the menu. For me, I guess I woulda shoulda got something other than veal schnitzel. I see on the website they do a fixed price ($38) for a smaller menu of 3 courses, Monday – Wednesday. We didn’t ask, it wasn’t offered. Might be a little better way to try them out.

10 second review of lunch at the Fish Boutique (Scripps Ranch)

Thanks for the reviews of this pretty new place. I will try! I'm in that Joe's a few times a month. Too bad they don't have the flatbread space a couple of doors down - food there seems sorta eh meh.

San Diego New Places Opening Thread, Part Deux

I'm no LA eater, so I've only heard of (or read about) Animal, Providence and AOC but haven't even been to these three.

I dunno, I looked at the Animal menu and pics of the food on Y**p (it’s a swear word!) and it seems like the price point is fine and overall the menu should be a hit for the (I’m guessing) the twenty and thirtysomething crowd in SD that also dig porkbelly (for example) and it’s isn’t that much of a stretch for the rest of the pig or whatever part of the animal. I’m guessing you say no because of the 20% (or whatever) of the menu is so-called "strange" parts…
