Visiting San Diego - Not to miss suggestions please!

Since you're near SDSU, try the chicken tawook at Alforon if you get a chance.

If you're feeling super-adventurous and/or bilingual, maybe Super Cocina, too.

I'm pretty sure kimchi (in sufficient quantity) is considered a vegetable on most parts of the planet.

Also, my filipino in-laws will insist that lumpia counts as a vegetable. ;-)

Really? What do you folks eat? I haven't recently met a kid that couldn't happily pick something from a selection of:
Hot Dog
Burger
Loco Moco
Lumpia
[or]
Beignets

Is there some medical or religious dietary restriction in your family?

MaƱana Testa?

Any new news on Mama Testa in Mira Mesa?

I thought in October they said they were going in "soon" (maybe next to QT Pot?), but there's no sign of progress from what I see when driving by.
Or am I looking at the wrong spot and it's going in somewhere else nearby?

Carnitas Snack Shack

I think of it as Del Mar Heights.
Carmel Valley I think of as south of that area (but it has sprawled).

FWIW, I live in Sorrento Valley and have lived within 10 miles of Del Mar for ~40 of the last 48 years.

Yes, Del Mar. Must've tapered off more recently, I guess.

Carnitas Snack Shack

Maybe it's when you go (or when we go), but I've only seen it near-empty once and have had to wait for a seat because it was packed on another occasion. Mostly it's in between.

SD's top 22 new restaurants in 2015

Amen, Fakey.
It's not like we're "celebrating" the opening of 22 new Applebees and Red Lobsters (I would accept an exact duplicate of the old Mission Valley Farrell's, though).

That's great! I'm glad everyone had a good time.

Javier Plascencia's new SD Restaurant

We've enjoyed every meal we've had at Romesco's, but we've eaten almost exclusively off the tapas menus each time, and in the bar area nearly every time.

Anyone try fishing there as well as eating?

I guess fishing and eating at the same time may be out of the question? A loco moco is a little awkward to eat if you're holding a fishing pole in the other hand.

I've been meaning to take the kids there. Maybe we'll leave the pole(s) the first trip and just eat and scout it out.

Weekend Birthday trip with kids - downtown SD

Depends on the kids, I guess.
YMMV.
If they're kids who only eat the chicken fingers or plain pasta off every restaurant's kids' menu, then probably not.
Mine, OTOH, like the ginger beer, sliders and devilled eggs ... and the random artwork.

Antelope sliders and kangaroo steak frites at Lion's Share?*

Also second the Puesto rec - my 8 and 10yo kids like it.

*Check to see what animals are available, menu changes.

breakfast and coffee

Tender Greens' Downtown location is now serving breakfast. Haven't been yet, but I like their lunch/dinner stuff.

Anybody like meatloaf?

The classic reply for using a smoker: "Until it's done!" ;-)

I run a remote temperature probe through the smoke port into the meat so as not to serve tartare or hockey pucks.

We smoked a whole turkey last sunday for ~5+ hours; now I'm craving meatloaf...

What's your *favorite* restaurant in San Diego?

Alforon's Chicken Tawook (taouk) is one of the best dishes in San Diego.
Or, if you get it to go (so they roll it up instead of slicing it like a pizza), my son dubbed it "Best Chicken Sandwich Ever."

Donut Time...Again

Why did I peek at this thread? Now I'm starving.

Thread content: Someone brought in Nomad donuts to work last week, so I got a sampling. There were chili-pepper (dusted? infused?) donut holes. One wasn't bad, just a nice burn that seemed to start after the donut hole was already gone in one bite. Had bites of two other full-size ones, but I'm not totally sure what the flavors were (sangria? and maybe a chai or green tea?).

They were okay, although they wouldn't kick MM Donut Touch off the top of my go-to list even if they were equidistant.

Great patisserie in La Jolla?

We had a selection of the MC mini tarts for Thanksgiving (which ones escapes me at the moment) and they were all delicious.

Wood for BBQ Smoker in SD

BBQs Galore is where I got our cherry, pecan, apple and hickory chunks for my Cookshack. I'm pretty sure they'll have oak and mesquite and maybe others, too.

Edit: Oh -- necropost!

How does one eat a duck head? Is it even worth the trouble, or like a chicken foot with even less material to work with?

Buying tea

I don't know what Infusions was like, but we've gotten good tea from here:
https://www.teagallerie.com/

Hit and miss on being able to actually try a tea first, though (they do have tasting events, but otherwise limited to what they are brewing at the moment).

Dining Mentors

I was so bummed we didn't get to try the tempura tarantulas.

That was outside the stadium during Comic Con. We were going to try one of each. My wife and I each got the quesadillas, my son the teri 'hopper and my daughter went straight for the choco 'hopper.

Dining Mentors

"Yes, of course I can bumble through it- I'd done it before. I've avoided the deep-fried tarantula and baked stuffed goat bowels."

Avoid?? My kids seek that stuff out! ;-)

Zarco Cocina de Baja

Not yet. It's on our to-go list, though.
