San Diego CLOSED Restaurants: Thread Four (2014 edition)

Between QT Pot and Mama Testa, we're going to be visiting that lot on a fairly regular basis, I think.

Easy dining for one from the convention center

If 30 minutes walking is no problem, you can walk from the CC to Juniper & Ivy. If you get winded or too hungry on the way, you will pass Puesto and Lion's Share at the early end of your walk.

If you miss the turn from Harbor onto Kettner, you'll eventually end up at Top of the Market/Fish Market.

I think of India St. as being a slightly nicer walk than Kettner, but staying on Kettner might save you a minute or two walking time. YMMV.

So I see:

Well, it's still a heckova lot closer than Hillcrest, and we can take the back street Capricorn route if MM Blvd is too nasty.

I look forward to welcoming Mama Testa to the 'hood.

I consider it to be Scripps Ranch, too, but you'd be surprised how often I'd run across some restaurant review talking about a great-sounding place I hadn't seen, and then noting it was Eot15 in the strip mall of doom or across the street in the Trader Joe's area.

I live in the Sorrento Mesa area and haunt the streets of the dead at night. Wich Addiction opened for evenings this summer, I read about it on their site, planned my attack (was getting food for the whole family), and when I got there it was closed. Seems they never bothered to tell anyone in Pacific Ridge or other western enclaves that they were open for dinner, and stopped doing it a day before I went.

You know that feeling when you know exactly what you're going to eat, having been thinking about it all day, your blood sugar is dropping and the restaurant is closed? And you're so hungry you can't even figure out what Plan B is? Yeah, I was grumpy.

I wonder where in Mira Mesa, hopefully west or central: east of the 15 seems to be a serious damper on customer traffic.

If it's not east, it's 20 minutes closer to my house than the current spot, and we probably won't have to circle the block(s) a bunch of times to find a spot within walking distance, like in Hillcrest.

Fun Waterfront Restaurants in La Jolla / Near Torrey Pines

Marine Room is about as beach-front La Jolla as you can get. Especially if you're lucky enough to go during high tide or storm chop.

One week in November with little kids - where should we eat?

I have two kids (8 & 10) who will (and have) pick(ed) grilled octopus over a lot of the entrees kids are "supposed" to like.

They also like Tender Greens and Pizza Port pizza. ;-)

I don't have a problem with Pizza Port pizza. I also do not care to eat Lego bricks. YMMV.

Edit: OP, if you are in the East Village/Gaslamp area and want to get pizza for you and the kids and a few decent beer choices for you, Basic is a viable choice. Their beer selection's not in the same league as Pizza Port, though.

On the go near the airport

Tender Greens at Liberty Station, get a sandwich (and/or savory steak pie) to go.

Alternately, every *bertos drive-thru within 4 miles of the airport and get your choice of burrito.

Grass-fed Beef Brisket in San Diego

I got a small grassfed brisket a few months ago from Homegrown in La Jolla and smoked it. Turned out pretty good in spite its being undersized for the smoking process.

Compendium of Dishes: Super Cocina (SD)

They gave us some of the pastel de elote to go (we closed the place out and I guess the kids' working knowledge of Spanish charmed them) when we went there in July. Not bad at all.

FWIW, my daughter thought their beans were the best she'd ever had. She was actually taking more off of the rest of our plates. It was the first time we'd been, and I guess we need to go back the next time we're close to the area.

San Diego's Local-Mussel Dishes

The mussels I had at Bull Taco a few years ago were excellent.

Full disclosure: The facts that we were camping there and watching the sunset while eating probably didn't hurt.

Red Hook Joint Effort beer

Add Holiday Wine Cellar (Escondido) and Plaza Liquor (next door to BevMo at Mira Mesa and Camino Santa Fe) as places to at least call to check for availability of random high(no pun intended)-end beers. :)

OMG! It's finally happening! Pernicano's is selling!

http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2014/s...

Let the bidding commence! Looks like it's going to be hotel/retail space, but maybe also room for new restaurant? Fabric restaurant? Cohn Group? Another expansion up from Baja? Anything's gotta be better than the closed old place, right?

Carnitas Snack Shack Wait Time Sunday at noon

Just remember that just because citronella may work on one kind of insect in one region, it's not universally effective on all insects.

It sure as **** doesn't work at all on Belizian mosquitos ... might as well have slathered up in BBQ sauce for all the good that did...

If you're going to visit AleSmith, you're within a few miles of Ballast Point, Green Flash, Hess, Saint Archer, Wet N Reckless, White Labs ... well, you get the idea:

I like Urban Plates. However, if they were equidistant, I might head toward Tender Greens. YtastebudsMV.

Also, since you're in the North County-ish area, try http://www.bettyspiewhole.com/ and report back -- I've been meaning to try this place.

Ballast Point in Little Italy, too.

Open Air Fish Market (@ The Embarcadero) to Start August 2.

This sounds very encouraging. Thanks for the update!

I used to live (and study) just up the hill from there. Is the truck there all week, or just weekends?

Sab-E-Lee dishes I should order?

Sab-E-Lee dishes I should order?

But this time I ordered over the phone and they nuked us at "2" -- at work we can order from Lotus Thai at night, and their scale is mild, medium and hot. The Lotus Thai "hot" papaya salad is "pretty hot," but no hotter than the SEL papaya salad at "2" -- I suspect that the base SEL papaya salad is what it is (and made in advance to marinate?), and doesn't have as wide a variable heat range.

Sab-E-Lee dishes I should order?

I got take-out from there last month. It was, flavor-wise, quite good. OTOH, their spice level regulation was way off (or maybe it's inverted).

I usually (over the last several years) order a 7 or 8 when eating there, get a skeptical look, and get served something less spicy than my companions that get 4s.

This time, I asked for all 2s (in deference to my wife and kids) and every dish was hotter than I've had at the restaurant. Have I been doing it wrong and 1 is the hottest?

One man's exhaustive search for the best fish taco in SD. .

Puesto's menu lists theirs (they have two kinds) as either mahi mahi or (for the baja fish) "crispy wild cod." I didn't see where they get their fish, though, so not sure if it's from Catalina or some other place.
