Welcome Comic-Con Visitors! Local CH Suggestions for Visitors: Comic-Con Weekend 2014

We had a really nice late lunch yesterday at Puesto. It might be the best, closest Mexican food to the Con.

Open Air Fish Market (@ The Embarcadero) to Start August 2.

I'm looking forward to reports on this. I'd have gone to the inaugural one, but I have to take the kids somewhere at 10am.

Prepared lunch/dinners in San Diego (city)

We once did a work lunch "budget" harbor cruise by bringing a Saffron picnic basket onto the Coronado ferry.

It was good, although not quite as uniformly good as the last time we were there several months ago. I loved the kangaroo steak frites that time, but this time the antelope sliders were a little less done than I prefer (not defective, mind you), and the fried quail & waffle didn't hit the "perfect" zone (benchmark: Linkery's chicken & waffle at brunch) with the "syrup" being a bit more acidic than I preferred.

The rabbit/boar/buffalo sausage platter was great, the devilled eggs solid, my wife's drink was excellent and my son enjoyed his wild style burger as usual. Next time I'll get the [wild beast] steak frites again.

Is anyone selling a breakfast burrito with uni, yet?

Wild boar bacon (or Palomar grassfed fried tripe or machaca), eben haezer organic eggs (or ostrich or emu), wild herbs (sage?), potatoes (maybe Currant-style tater tots), fresh salsa and uni.

But they haven't even been to Tapenade yet.

Water Grill going into the Palm Restaurant in East Village. .

Depo exhibits all over the crosswalk, and the light changing ... ugh. 20 years ago but it's still with me.

Fortunately my moniker is more of a gastronomic reference (also, I was all alone in the street except for the traffic, so nobody knew). ;-)

Water Grill going into the Palm Restaurant in East Village. .

Used to eat at WG a bunch of times on work trips when staying at the Biltmore (loved the old mural in the lobby) or working in an office across the street.
I still have nightmares about spilling a luggage-carrier load of boxes of papers all over the intersection between the office and the hotel.

Also a chinese place (Mon Kee?) not too far away.

what does San Diego need in its dining scene?

Clone Viva Las Arepas (of Las Vegas) and put it within 10 miles of my house.

When I was a little kid (Nixon Admin?), there was a shack in the middle of the Oceanside Pier that sold smoked fish. I'd like that place to come back, and to have the option of really good bagles, that smoked fish with some cream cheese for breakfast on weekends.

"America’s 20 Best Barbecue Cities"

Turned out pretty good, after all. But it would been a disaster without the foil - the drip pan (which would have been sloshing with a bunch of ribs or a full-size brisket) only had a teeny bit of moisture and fat when I went to clean it this morning. Foiling and adding liquid to the foil kept it from turning into a triangular hockey puck. Flavor was good and the 4 of us only left a few slices for leftovers, but lesson learned and I'll stick to the cryovac'ed aurochs briskets from smart&final or similar-size cuts when the inclination for a long smoke in the Cookshack strikes.

"America’s 20 Best Barbecue Cities"

texas crutch update: foiled it at about noon (with a little hot water) with meat at 169, dropped temp dial a smidge, took daughter to guitar practice, got home and meat was at 192, added a little more water and another layer of foil, wrapped in towels and put it in a cooler to rest for a few hours.

Could be good, could be pulled brisket, could be jerky.

Yeah, it went in at 6:20 this morning (let's hear it for procrastination) and was at 159 when I had to take the kids to BJJ practice. When I get home in about an hour, I'll probably foil it for the remainder and let it hit 190 and then rest in foil.

And now I'm throwing a brisket in the smoker in a few. Never done one this small -- it's a wee grassfed thing from Homegrown. I just hope it doesn't dry out.

Note to self:
Get pirate eye patch and use dark-adapted eye for peering into the depths of the smoker.

Philly hound and beer lover headed to San Diego

Stone's hidden downtown Kettner & West B store with a bunch of taps is just a few blocks from the Bristol (check their hours to make sure they're open when you want to drink/taste).

Ballast Point's restaurant/brewery is at the north end of Little Italy on India Street, and not a bad walk at all unless you're in foofy shoes or are disabled.

Mexican Fiesta on India ... good quick, inexpensive food, but no place to sit -- get an al pastor taco and/or machaca or carne asada or carnitas burrito and walk a couple blocks "south" on India to the courtyard/patio/steps by the trolley tracks on West C or "north" to Little Italy or "west" to the waterfront to find a place to sit and eat with better scenery.

Where do you like for breakfast in North County?

Is Snooze both good and accessible on weekends for breakfast? Haven't been yet.

SuperNatural Sandwiches To Open Its First Brick & Motar Site

An added bonus of getting the sandwiches cut is they use long wood toothpicks to hold the halves together. The toothpicks make nice stabbing skewers to pick up any morsels that might fall back into the paper tray.*

Maybe it's because we had the kids with us both times, but they cut the sandwiches without us asking and we had no problems. But I can see how a whole one of those sandwiches could suddenly lose all structural integrity. There's a reason (besides pigeons) that they don't make bridge spans out of lightly toasted, buttered brioche.

*Protip: put the fallen morsels onto a shrimp chip.

Have them cut your sandwich in half before they give it to you.
If my kids can eat their half sandwiches there without them falling apart, I'm sure you can. ;-)

Sending vegetarian meal to sick relatives?

Native Foods in Encinitas is pretty good (and vegan, but with a lot of meat substitutes). I don't know if any service delivers their food, though.

I can also go to Vegas to eat at Viva las Arepas, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't love to have a VLA to visit in San Diego that doesn't require I get a hotel room as part of the bill. ;-)
