Eating pizza or burger w/ knife and fork

If they are eating Neapolitan-style pizza, it probably says they don't want grease running down their arms.

Would this rub you the wrong way? (House Guests selectively picking up the tab) and questions on house guest expectations

Be thankful they didn't stay 2 weeks with an unruly child and fish staples out of the trunk of their car!

No salt on the restaurant table, again.

No sh*t. What if I want to add salt to my dessert?

Slightly salt-dusted caramel ice cream.

Pizza delivery/take-out vs. eating it THERE

I can crisp it up a bit back in the oven and it certainly beats a DUI.

LOL, my mom loves that place. They certainly have decent food and it is a well-run spot.

How long to cook stuffed pork chops?

Well, I always tended to overcook and these take all the guesswork out. I've got 2, one for the gas grill as well.

So much easier and efficient than opening the oven to check with the older kind or even a regular digital.

Invest in a wireless digital thermometer. There is no correct time, only temperature.

Another for Sabatino's. The best sausage I've ever had.

They should know, after the first night of "business".

James- I do the same thing unless the door opens out with no handle, which is a solution to the problem for me. More places should do that.

What is the hottest / hippest / cutting edge food of this moment in time?

I've been seeing lots of restaurants with dandelion lately.

To think, I'm eating what my great-grandparents came to this country so they didn't have to.

More tipping data

"The average tip was once about 15 percent, but it’s creeping up towards 20 percent."

Also, the fact that cash tips weren't tracked makes this "study" useless.

Are we supposed to be tipping much less than I thought in California?

LOl, I can remember my good tipping customers from my college days- and that's many years longer than I care to admit.

Are we supposed to be tipping much less than I thought in California?

Discussions with someone who ponders servers making $250K a year (or whatever the crazy number was) is pointless.

Are we supposed to be tipping much less than I thought in California?

Thank you. I asked my favorite checker (NOT BAGGER) today and she is making $20 an hour after 18 years.

I was also told that bagger jobs have the most turnover due to the low pay.

I would like to see evidence of this $18 an hour claim. I asked my bagger yesterday how much he made and he said $11 an hour.

I also looked at the median salary from online sources and it was around $12 an hour in CA.

To start with, I don't know how many servers work 40 hours a week.

I've got one friend at a high-end place and his shift is 5 nights a week but only 6 hours each.

The other, upscale chain and he comes in at 6 and is sent home when things slow down- so he may only work 4 hours a night.

was this a social faux pas?

Just an FYI, Caesar salad was not originally made with anchovies. Something I learned on Chowhound.

LOL, no wonder some use the phrase "man's best friend"- they are often more pleasant than people.

The Chatty Bagger at the Grocery Store

Sounds like Gelson's to me, although I've never had a bagger withhold my groceries until the conversation (her part) was terminated.

I'd speak with the checker as my first point of contact. They do hire some challenged employees that sometimes don't always understand their conversations are not appropriate.

Lunch in Laguna

Check some of your choices on Trip Advisor- I find it a bit better than Yelp.

El Adobe- wedding central.

Lunch in Laguna

If you are interested in the historical aspects of Laguna (which your post indicates), Hotel Laguna is one of the oldest buildings in town and worth a walk-though, right on Main Beach.

Las Brisas (as mentioned below) is great for a drink and the view. Assuming you don't mind parking and a little walking, I would do something like a drink at LB and then lunch at Alessa.

If any of your group are movie buffs, one of the scenes in "Now, Voyager" with Bette Davis uses the gardens outside Las Brisas and the pergola to the right as you are facing the front as a stand in for one of the Brazilian scenes in the movie. Bette had a house in town for years.

Splashes is further south.

Why do people go to All-You-Can-Eat Buffets?

They do that at Border Grill for weekend brunch, love it.

Why do people go to All-You-Can-Eat Buffets?

<Right, but if you're in Las Vegas, it doesn't matter that you can spend $38 at a restaurant in NYC. :) I can spend that same $40 at a nice restaurant here in LA too, but that doesn't do me any good if I'm in Las Vegas and not home in LA. >

I did give a specific Vegas-centric example:)

Why do people go to All-You-Can-Eat Buffets?

That's my feeling as well, c oliver. I usually get comped buffets in Vegas and still rarely go- except for breakfast.

There are too many good places to eat these days on and off the strip for me to waste a meal on something that I don't enjoy.

Perfect recent example- breakfast buffet was $22.99 at a mid-level hotel and egg choices were runny scrambled eggs or pre-made Eggs Benedict sitting in steam trays, or waiting 10 minutes in line for a fresh omelette.

For the same money at Cafe Bellagio, I can have a lobster omelette with hash browns, toast and a beverage and they are all brought to me hot.

I can see the appeal though for lots of people, it just doesn't do it for me.
