Fuffy's Profile
Less-Touristed Places in the 4th?
We thought Le Petite Marche expensive for the small portions the first time we went several years ago, but have been back twice and like it better. Quite good. Tables outside fill up quickly - Inside not very appealing. In Paris we usually eat out for lunch when we see only the French.
At the new White Gorilla (where Cotelettes was) the other night, we were the only non French. Lebey and I like it but my husband did not.
Entrecote Minute? Anyone know?
Here in Paris I went to buy entrecote steaks. I didn't notice until I got home that the receipt was for "entrecote minute" and the price per kilo seems to be less than for regular entrecote. Does anyone know whether entrecote minute is a different cut from entrecote? Or is it just that they are cut thinner than usual.
Anyone know about fenugreek?
Some of my Indian recipes call for fenugreek, but the stuff I have (tiny hard pellets) doesn't seem to have much taste. Maybe even turns bitter when cooked (not sure). I wonder whether anyone knowledgeable about Indian spices is an aficionado and can enlighten me as to what ought to be?
May 2012 COTM: Food of Spain and Moro The Fish, Poultry, and Meat Thread
Well, I'd love you to try the recipe that didn't work for me to see what the results are - I'd be interested. But I think it would be safer for you to make a traditional green sauce

MORO - BREAST OF DUCK WITH POMEGRANATE MOLASSES
This is not only quick but easy and good. I found that in my oven her heat and timing overcooked the duck breast, but perhaps I sealed for too long at the beginning, before turning and putting in to the oven.

HAKE IN SALSA VERDE
I made this because I had a lot of parsley but, alas, I had no fish stock just Marigold powder. The recipe was disappointingly blah. Just because of the Marigold? But I have made a very similar recipe before, fish cooked on top of the stove with parsley seems to be a Spanish classic, but it has always been a disappointment so now I have learned my lesson. I'd be curious to know whether any one has had success with this (or similar) recipe. So far I way prefer fish with an Italian green sauce made with uncooked parsley, garlic, oil etc.
Best patisserie in Paris?
We live in the Marais, surrounded by local branches of Le Notre, Dalloyau and Mourlot. But it was only when accidentally in the l2th, Avenue Reuilly, that we stumbled on Sebastien Degardin, possibly the best patisserie in town. With the possible exception of Herme, the cakes we bought were the best we've ever tasted. Yet the tiny shop was empty and we gather only full during the holidays. Their versions of such traditional favorites as Paris-Brest were original and delicious, a praline cream and incredible toasted nut topping. Their chocolate pastries equally rich , subtle and original. Many other choices which we'll return to try out. Definitely worth the detour, as their website suggests.
vietnamese food in paris
We got to Aux Delices de Vietnam yesterday (233 not 213 Rue Charenton). We had dumplings, a "Vietnamese" (their name) soup with shrimp and chicken , a ravioli soup, and we brought home a pho and "Vietnamese" (their name) salad. The soup broths were peppery and above average. There is a counter with dishes in lots of sauce, but we were sorry there wasn't a wider variety and we would have liked more salads. Thanks for the recommendation.
Qui Plume La Lune
We had a terrific lunch yesterday at fairly new Qui Plume la Lune. The waiter told us that the owner/chef's wife is an actress and the name is from a favorite French film (we couldn't find the film in our French film guide). At lunch time there is a no choice menu for 29 euros. Yesterday the lunch was an amuse bouche of very crispy fried crab bit (didn't taste of crab but was nice and crunchy)in a lovely white foamy sauce. First course was a sauteed foie gras with shitakes two ways in a veal reduction sauce. Main course was sauteed shrimp with white and green asparagus, marjoram and another really good sauce. Third course was a sable cookie with lemon curd on top (plus a silly fairground candy floss with purple pieces). Finally tiny financiers - not sure if they came with our one coffee or would have come anyway. Bread excellent.
We were bowled over because every course was delicious, new and interesting but not peculiar, and also substantial. We rarely like all three courses. We way preferred this place to the three Michelin star places we have been to, where, for our taste, there is such an effort to be novel that many parts of the meal fail.
Qui Plume la Lune, 50 Rue Amelot, 75011 (between Bastille and Republic). Tel (0)1 48 07 45 48. Closed Sunday and Monday.
May 2012 Cookbook of the Month Nominations are Open!
Please stick Moro in somehow for those who have it. It is a fantastic book and, I suppose, could be bought over the Internet from Books for Cooks, London.
vietnamese food in paris
Thanks a lot. We must have gone to the wrong place as we didn't remember the number. We'll try again.

Aliettedb, We have just looked for Delice de Vietnam and could find only Delice de Charonton. Could that be it? We brought home a shrimp, ravioli, noodle soup which was a little above average. A stir fried chicken dish and a broccoli dish. These two were disappointingly bland with no specific Vietnamese flavours. If it is the same place with same ownership, I wonder which dishes your mother loved.
Ikea kitchen Cabinets?
Thank you gliterati8. Though I am comparing my Ikea painted with my Ikea wooden. The wooden are four years older, MUCH more used and yet are absolutely as good as new. So that is what I would recommend to anyone wondering. Definitely not the painted, alas.
Ikea kitchen Cabinets?
Thank you very much Swissaire. So I see that next time I should choose the Foil finish rather than the (cheaper) painted one - Applad. I chose Applad because I wanted a mat rather than shiny finish. A visiting architect friend took a look when they were installed and said "Those Ikea cabinets look so good when they are new..." I should have asked her first.
Second avenue and 12th street
Any good options for lunch very near the cinema at Second and 12th? Anything considered...Thanks
Where to eat near BAM?
P.S. Just read the reviews of Junior's (I hadn't heard of it) and it looks as though it is what we need.Thanks. Still would love to know of any nearby alternatives.
Where to eat near BAM?
Thanks very much TrishUntrapped. Anything else slightly superior?
Where to eat near BAM?
Please. Is there anything REALLY close to Harvey BAM for a lunch/brunch before a 1.30 matinee? Doesn't have to be wonderful.
Please, Is there anything REALLY close to BAM Harvey for a brunch or lunch before a 1.30 matinee?
Ikea kitchen Cabinets?
P.S. Three years after buying, the paint on our white painted Ikea kitchen cabinets (Applad) is fraying and chipping a little after very, very light use (we are two adults and away for half of the year) so we think this is not a good finish to buy. Someone above suggests patch painting, we have on the corners but it shows up. Our wooden Ikea kitchen cabinets in another flat are impeccable after seven years full time use. .
Brooklyn Museum
After a Brooklyn Museum morning on Saturday we took Caribbean take out home from The Islands, just across the street from the museum at 803 Washington Avenue (Tel 718 398 -3575). Until 3 pm it was take out only: four dishes ($12 each - oxtail, chicken jerky, chicken stew and one I can't remember). Each with amazingly tasty rice and mixed veg. Tiny dark kitchen, huge dark pots, cheerful server, tiny sit down room for later in the day (up very steep stairs). This is an absolute gem for hole- in -the -wall lovers. Don't miss you who dare an occasional cholesterol boost..

Guadalajara?
Guadalajara Report as requested by Cristina. Well, as usually happens, alas, I didn't get to most of the restaurants on my carefully wrought list.
I was taken to Cocina 88 by Mexican colleagues but it didn't seem to be a Argentinian steakhouse. It is in a beautiful house, I had a good lime soup, good veal tacos and we were all content.
I am sad to say, though, that breakfast at the Crown Plaza was not good and
dinner at Sacramonte was positively disappointing. I invited a Mexican and a Colombian who both agreed...First I had a totally bland avocado soup with no avocado taste, and then chicken with an inferior mole sauce. The food wasn't in the same league as better Mexican restaurants in New York.
I am sorry I didn't manage to get to the places that Cristina kindly recommended . I am sure they would have been better.
Porcini Parmesan Salt
Aren't the proportions wrong on this chowhound recipe? I have just made it, used on scrambled eggs and found it terribly salty. I used little but anyway the parmesan and porcini were almost drowned by the salt.
Anyone know about pasta machines?
I must buy a pasta machine as a present for for an enthusiastic young cook but I know nothing. Marcella Hazan writes :"The only kind of pasta machine that you should consider is the kind that has one set of parallel cylinders, usually made of steel, for kneading and thinning the dough and a double set of cutters, one broad for fettuccine the other for tagliolini very narrow noodles."
It seems that the Imperia SP150 is preferred above the Atlas, but there is only
one Imperia which is labelled "double cutter" and no other machines are labelled "double cutter" - can that be that the Imperia double cutter is only machine that fulfills Marcella Hazan's requirements?
Any advice on buying a pasta machine would be most welcome.
Guadalajara?
Sorry to be so demanding, but, on second thoughts, do you know of any slightly more comfortable (but still good Mexican) places, perhaps like Sacramonte, in case I also feel like rest and recuperation while or after exploring. Thanks a LOT...
Guadalajara?
P.S. Cristina (or anyone) do you know anything about Corazon de Alcachofa?
Guadalajara?
Thanks Cristina, I tried again and got several hits but not a lot of information, your replies were the most helpful. Please could you (or anyone else) help again?
I am most interested in really good Mexican food.
As far as I can see Anita Li and I Latina are a little more international than I would like and someone described them as "trendy and fun" which is not for me. Lula Bistro also sounds too international, as does the Argentinian La Matera.
Corazon de Alcachofa looks more serious according to what they say about themselves on their site.

Cocina 88 ? ( I couldn't see the Cocina 88 menu on line)
all look as though they may be my sort of place. Do you (or anyone) have thoughts about any of these - or any other eateries?
I'll be at the Hilton near the convention center but expect to drive around including a trip to the crafts area five miles outside the town.
Would be MOST grateful for help. Thank you.
