Canadian chowhound visiting the white moutains - where to eat Hey fellow chowhounds! Ill be staying in North Conway next week for hiking and I'm looking for nice casual places to eat after a hike and some nice places to go out for drinks/supper. Also if you have recommendations of places to go buy food (farmers market, nice grocery stores, etc) I'd love to hear them! We'll have a car and I dont mind having to drive a bit to get to nice places! Thanks in advance :) |

No more café in the architecture basement since Mcgill closed that down a couple years ago :/ They also tightened alcohol permits on campus so I doubt they do the one dollar bottle deal (it was in the engineering building) |

Cabane a sucre Au Pied de Cochon We were 12 too this time and it was comfortable with people seating at both end. They have two longer tables on the extreme right of the shack where i think you could seat up to 16-18 people. |

Cabane a sucre Au Pied de Cochon I agree with that, I prefered last year apple season to this year's sugar menu. However the desserts at first were my favorite part (followed by the appetizers)! I went twice to the sugar shack this year and the second time I actually ate my fill of the first serving of desserts. Also they dont keep as well in tupperware as say the ham or the stuffed chicken. |

Cabane a sucre Au Pied de Cochon Im guessing that Juste pour Rire is handling the reservations from now on (hence the new email pieddecochon@hahaha.com). That would also explain why they were so quick to come back to you, they have probably allready a system in place to handle reservations on this scale which is more akin to a show almost. I was at the cabane a sucre on saturday and I think M.Rozon was there with a group actually, they were chatting with M.Picard so I guess there is a new partnership for the reservation at least. I sent a request on monday too but no call yet. Im curious how this will play out! |

Good Sourdough Starter needed in Montreal Hi Carl(otta)! Sorry I just realized I had never replied to your post! I indeed was in the pursuit of a starter, and I ended up buying a wet starter on King Arthur flour website. It was great but I quickly forgot to take care of it as I'm not baking a lot of bread lately (read zero). So now im still without a starter to share! Ordering was fine if you dont want to go through the hassle of making it yourself but I found it a bit expensive (specially their ridicule shipping fees to canada...). Its quite easy to do, when I did it myself the first time I followed this recipe: |

Claim repport can take forever and so can dealing with insurances... We got water dammage last summer and it was hell... Good luck to them! |

We went last week, and we were quite happy with our experience. I havent had ramen a lot (only another time at Imadake) so I cant compare to what it should be tasting, but I found it quite tasty and better than what we had at Imadake. We made the mistake of ordering gyozas and chicken karaage, which were both delicious but a mistake in term of quantity of food! 2 soups + 2 appetizers = 2 painfully stuffed campers. In terms of price I agree with other posters that it was a bit more expensive than I would have expected, but considering that just the bowl of soup would have been enough to make us content and the quality of the food, I wasnt to put off. All in all would go back there. |

Cabane a sucre Au Pied de Cochon No worries :) I completely understand you, I freaked out when I realized I missed their call on sunday! Its all part of the anticipation leading up to (hopefuly) another delicious meal! |

Cabane a sucre Au Pied de Cochon I sent mine at 12:01 also and I got a first phone call on Sunday, which I missed, and then they called me back on Monday. I dont know how how their calling back list is ordered, by time of email or by date requested, or a mix of the two maybee? |

Best grocery store rotisserie chicken I know the show L'Épicerie on Radio Canada had done a comparison of a lot of major grocerie chain's rotisserie chicken, both in terms of taste and nutritious value (salt, fat, etc) and price. I cant remember the winner but I'm sure you can find the show on tou.tv. Its only in french though... |

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I called Arès and they had some for .95$ each. I ended up buying them online because King Arthur Flour had a sale and it ended up being cheaper that way, but Ill keep in mind your suggestions next time I'm looking for some! :) |

Its because the 5 saison in Westmount doesnt exist anymore :p they tore it down to do some condo ... I dont know if it will reopen in the new commercial space there once the condos are done |

Les Fougères sells some of their products at other stores |

Hello Montreal Chowhounders! Im looking for Panettone papers molds in Montreal. Anybody know where i could find some? I bought them online last year but there must be a place to find them in MTL for a better price. |

Good Sourdough Starter needed in Montreal Hi Remdog! Do you think I could take advantage of you and your wife's generosity and also aske for a little piece of starter? I had one that died due to water damage and renovation this summer and I'm looking for some sourdough for making christmas bread! |

Cabane a sucre Au Pied de Cochon I've been hunting for a similar recipe as well.. The only clue I have is that the meat was braised instead of roasting... e.i. cooking with some liquid but not completely covered with it, for a long period of time and not to high temperature. |

You have to be careful if you buy in a grocery store. At the metro on Victoria/Sherbrooke I saw this gem... total fail... |

LeMeac - go - get the Foie, get the Duck, and get the French Toast. Thank me later. Thats really cool trivia! I saw a book by that publishing house not too long ago and I immediatly tought of the restaurant. Didnt know there actually was a connection! |
|
|
its a bit off the way, but its uber close to where I live so Im not complaining :D Its going to do some good to Saint Jacques if it works there |
|

Apparently Satay Brothers are opening a permanent location on the corner of Saint-Jacques and Laporte, where Gourmet Pressé used to be. |

Just go an americano from there and honestly I'm very impressed! Its the best coffee I've had so far in Westmount, I think i found my new go to place for coffee. Got the Roast beef sandwich too and it was delicious, the juice that came with it was maybee a tad salty for my taste. Soup was great. |

Finally went there, place is nice, service was very good, friendly. Like cherylmtl said, its decent pizza, my only complain really was the tomato sauce. It had this really strong taste of dried oregano and I was missing that clean, fresh tomato-y taste. And since there was a lot of sauce it kind of camouflaged the rest of the pizza, which is too bad because it had potential. |

Great, thanks for the tip! I've been to Pullman a lot, and even once with my mom and I love it, but we are off the wine wagon for a little while so no amazing wine list for us this time! I think ill try Bouillon Bilk, and keep Brasserie T for a lunch occasion... maybe ill get my mom to take me out for lunch too hehe |
|

Hello fellow mtl chowhounds! Also if you guys have other suggestions in that area feel free to suggest. I looked a bit on the board and tought of T and F but open to other suggestions.. Something a bit more upscale in chinatown? (I'll keep the good, cheaper places for when I'm paying ;) We always go to Dominion Square Tavern when she comes so want to try something new. How is Beaver Hall? Bouillon Bilk? Type of food doesn't matter as long as its amazing. It needs to be close to the area tough, even tough my mom runs half marathons, she cant seem to be able to walk more than 2 blocs in Montreal -_- Thanks guys/gals :) |

In search of HONEY CRISP APPLES in downtown Montreal (including Atwater Market) there was some bio honeycrisp at l'Autre Marché, on Victoria in Westmount. |
|

One of my good friend really likes the place, I havent tried it yet but have been meaning to. Let us know how it is! |
|

Mexican products in the sud-ouest? There is this ethnic and natural grocery on Notre Dame west of Atwater called Branche d'Olivier. They are not mexican but I found some mexicans items there, It worth checking out, they have a great variety of products. |

Great Pizza at Home [split from Quebec] Sourdough is really fun but you have to remember to feed it. i foind myself only feeding it and not really using it. And then when i wanted to make non-sourdough bread I always felt guitly of not using my culture... im taking a break now but eventually ill grow another one. If you want tips to create your own sourdough, head over to the blog Pinch my Salt, she has great instruction there to raise one! |
