Alforno Providence- It Must Be Nice Having Such Great Food That You Can Be Rude

Nothing wrong with being a tourist and looking for a great meal. We are all tourists at some point. I plan my vacations mostly around where we will be eating.

The difference nowadays is that tourists are informed. Many don't just read the guidebooks, they read chowhound, yelp, tripadvisor..... Alforno is still always busy. Tourists or locals, they are are obviously doing well enough to generate interest and keep things up. IMHO, they haven't skipped a beat.

That is unfortunate because the baked pasta is usually delicious. I have been to Alforno and Cafe Louis (Boston, now closed) over a dozen times and make the drive atleast once a year from Southern CT. My favorites are the grilled spicy oil pizza, baked pasta, and the apple crisp tart. Those dishes have never let me down. Alforno has been in business for over 30 years. That should speak for itself. A restaurant that is a "fad" does not stick around for this long. Im thinking about jumping the in car and taking a 1.5 hr drive up for dinner tonight. Anyone care to join?

Agreed, no one enjoys being treated poorly. In my experience this does not happen regularly.

I must have thicker skin... Im not bothered by it because its comical to see a 20 something who makes $15 an hour try to act like they are so important.

IMHO, and I have witnessed dozens who will agree, Alforno does still put out some pretty tasty dishes. Perhaps you ordered the wrong thing?

Not sure why everyone lets the snobbery bother them. I could care less if the host is being a jerk.

As for the food, the grilled pizzas, baked pasta in the pink, and fruit tarts are still amazing and worth going back for time and time again.

Memorial Day Weekend in Montreal. Help with itinerary.

Joe Beef looks really good. I live in the suburbs where nothing is walkable distance. The ability to walk from Lemeac to Baldwin and having dinner at a French bistro will set the stage nicely for the wknd. We will try many different cuisines throughout the trip and are really looking forward to appreciating the French-Quebecois-Montreal culinary influence.

Good to know. I checked out the Edgar Hypertaverne website and its not what we were looking for. Pullman Wine Bar seems like a good option after dinner at CC&P. They even have the same interior design co.

Thanks for all your help. Have decided on the itinerary with the exception of Sunday brunch.

Friday Night - Lemeac & Baldwin Barmacy

Saturday Lunch - Le Petit Alep

Saturday Dinner - CC&P and Pullman

Sunday Brunch - Garcon?

Sunday Dinner - Le Locale

Monday Lunch- Milos

Thanks for the suggestion. What would you get rid of to try Joe Beef?

Thanks for the advice on Petite Marche and the distance to Byblos. Will stay with Le Petit Alep. APDC is open on Sunday and I hope to check it out. After looking at a few more reviews, Le local looks like a good choice on Friday, Le Club Chasset et Pesche on Saturday, and Lemeac on Sunday if not APDC

Memorial Day Weekend in Montreal. Help with itinerary.

Hello All,
I am traveling to Montreal for the long weekend. Last year I had the pleasure of visiting over Labor Day and having been looking forward to this visit ever since. We will be traveling with another couple that has not experienced Montreal. Some of the highlights from last time were: goat cheese salad, short rib, and pain perdue @ lemeac and a few hours at Baldwin Barmacie, tasting menu w/ wine pairing @ Toque!, a pit stop at Fairmount Bagel, weekday lunch special @ Estiatorio Milos, and Saturday lunch @ Jean-Talon Market.

I have a few decisions to make for the group and would appreciate your suggestions. Price is not much of an issue, one person in the group is a pescatarian so APDC is out.

Friday Night
Lemeac, Cafe Ferreira, Le Local

Saturday Afternoon
Jean-Talon Market - Lunch nearby / Perhaps Le Petit Alep, Le Petite Marche or Byblos

Saturday Dinner
Toque or Le Club Chasse et Pesche

Sunday Brunch
Garcon!

Sunday Dinner
I believe Lemeac and Le Local are open on Sunday night for dinner - Whichever one we don't go to on Friday or Deca 77.

Monday Lunch
Nothing too heavy as we have a long haul back home. Estiatorio Milos?

On Saturday night we are looking to go out after dinner. Looking for a lively place, good drinks or wine, a bit trendy, not full of college age kids. Some of the suggestions I have come across are: L'assommoir, Plan B, Edgar Hypertaverne, Buvette Chez Simone / Bouchonne, BU and Pullman.

Helados Vazquez in Bridgeport, CT for Gelato!!!!!

Thanks for the recommendation along with TracyGeo. I stopped in last week. Helados Vazquez really does have some of the best gelato I have had. They did a great job with renovating the place and keep in extremely clean. The homemade and authentic Mexican dishes were a real treat. The freshly prepared tortillas and high quality food was a nice surprise and a welcome addition to my list of Mexican dining options. I had the beef soup and chicken enchiladas. The enchiladas were far superior to the typical heavy, overly sauced, and super cheesy ones. Price point is superb, $8 for entrees & BYOB. I look forward to going back again soon.

Helados Vazquez - another original in Black Rock

Just stopped in for the first time last week. Thanks for the recommendation. This place in not to be missed. I loved it so much that I signed up for a yelp account to write a review and help get the word out. Everything is fresh and locally grown when possible. The serve up really flavorful, authentic, and high quality Mexican food. The homemade tortillas are top notch, it was my first time having them, and it makes all the difference. The place is very nicely renovated and impeccably clean. The gelato is incredible with over 20 flavors and made with real fruit. The price point is perfect, only around $8 for an entree. BYOB is a big plus. Definitely check it out!

Black Rock - Bridgeport, CT

Tonight was my first time in Helados Vasquez and I will definitely be back soon. Everything is made from scratch on the premises. David & Sonia serve authentic and fresh Mexican food using local and organic ingredients. They have 20 flavors of homemade gelato that is made with real fruit and is true to the authentic Italian style of gelato. I had a beef soup and chicken enchiladas. The tortillas were made this morning with a tortilla press and the dish was far superior to the typical overly sauced, heavy with cream, doused in cheese type of enchiladas. The menu changes daily & on Sundays they serve a few different flavors of tamales. Helados Vazquez is also one of the only BYOB restaurants around. I highly recommend it and will be back this weekend.
