Jerk Chicken?
My best friend is coming into town this weekend (in late Sat. night) and has requested that we go eat somewhere that has fabulous jerk chicken....something she has had a taste for for years since you can't exactly get it in the 4 Corners.
Does anyone know of a good, not too expensive (max $30 per person) place that serves really good jerk chicken? I live in Woodridge and would prefer somewhere in the 'burbs...but going into the city will be fine as long as it's easy to get to since I, too, have not been to the city all that much since moving here.
Thanks in advance.
Todai buffet in Schaumburg
I agree. Mistuwa is a great place to go for inexpensive Japanese, Chinese, and Korean cuisine. Their sushi is reasonably priced and the bim bim bap is a staple of my work week lunches. There is also a market where you can pick up snacks too. Warning though...the food court only accepts cash.
Todai buffet in Schaumburg
I thought it was terrible...but it could've been the time I went. I went 45 mins before the lunch hour was over on a Sat and it was fend for yourself. Nothing new was coming from the kitchen and you were left to fight over the remains pieces with other dinners and scraping the bottom of the bowls. And we were still charged full price!!! From what we tried...it was nothing worth what you pay for. I would say try it if you are prepared to pay more than you should and also go at the beginning of the dining hours.
Pagosa Springs/Durango/Pueblo CO
Durango:
Oscar's~ Diner food with that oh so good breakfast ($)
Carvers~ Microbrewery good for breakfast ($)
Jean-Pierre~ Bakery/eatery. Great for lunch and a quick snack ($)
Seasons~ Newly remodeled after a fire. Casual fine dinnig ($$$)
Serious Texas BBQ~ Best BBQ I've ever had! The pulled pork sandwich and cheesy potatoes are to die for! ($)
East by Southwest~ The mojito is the best I've ever had. Pad Thai is delish as are most of the rolls. ($$$)
***My dollar signs are in accordance with SW pricing which is lower than the pricing scale I use in Chicago.
Enjoy!
Lobster roll? Fried clams?
You can get a pretty decent lobster roll at Pilot Pete's located in the Schaumburg Airport. The rest of the menu is good and most friends recommend the restaurante, however I haven't tried much else other than the roll (I get it everytime) Pricing is fair. And I do love the decor...all kind of aviation knick knacks complete with actual planes hanging from the ceilings.

chi 1 day cooking class - maybe pig roast??
You could try looking at the class schedule at the Chopping Block in the Merchandise Mart.

I personally haven't taken any of the courses but I did go there to do a mock "Iron Chef" and wine tasting class for a company party. It was a blast and the employees are very knowledgeable and helpful. I do plan, though, on taking a knife skills course in the future.
Easter...dine out or cook dilemma
Thank you for all the input. I was lucky enough to find a small reasonably priced ham last night...so it looks like I'm cooking which will be great...now I just have to decide on side dishes.
Easter...dine out or cook dilemma
Firstly, I'm sorry to hear about your losses.
I want a small ham because...I know I'm going to elicit a ton of groans with this one...but I don't like ham whatsoever. And since my BF is coming for dinner and I just live with my son I really don't want left overs. I want to serve ham because they like it. But I would love to cook myself rather than go out...that was the BF's idea so he doesn't have to play human jungle gym while I'm in the kitchen.
I was thinking about steak...but we always do that. And a tenderloin is out of my price range...which is also part of the reason for a small ham.
But...you and I must be on the same wave length today. I'm making turkey and dumplings for dinnter tonight. :)
Easter...dine out or cook dilemma
I've checked the boards...so I apologize if this seems redundant.
I'm at odds as to what to do for Easter...either go out for either brunch or dinner or cook.
The problem with going out is I don't know which restaurants in the area (around Woodridge) would be good to go to with a child (6 yr) and that won't cost too much (less than $25 a person). I've checked open table but have gotten no where. I would prefer a buffet type setting since it's easier on the child-factor with him being able to choose exactly what he wants to eat. Riva sounds interesting but I'm afraid it's out of price range. Allaguer's doesn't have any tables open at brunch and I think it might be too upscale for a 6 yr. old. I am willing to drive a little but not a ton.
If I choose to cook I would like to make a ham...the problem is that I don't want to buy a huge ham...just enough for 2 adults and 1 child about 2-3 lbs. Any one know where I can find or "downsize" a ham in the area?
Thanks in advance!
Where to buy Man Tou
I'm looking for somewhere to buy plain man tou (steamed buns) in the suburbs. I have looked at Mistuwa and couldn't find any. Any suggestions?
Just got braces and EVERYTHING hurts, need ideas for softer foods...
My are those the days where every month for a week my teeth would kill me...and this lasted 5 years! I agree with HillJ...applesauce and ginger ale were my go to's along with yogurt chicken noodle soup (the dry mix kind).
What's the strangest meal you've had recently?
Don't know if this is odd but when I stay at my BF's place we tend to graze on whatever is available and as sickening at it sounds here was last night's dinner:
Leftover spaghetti
Cheetoh puffs dipped in ranch dressing
Leftover Italian bread dipped in balsamic vinegar and olive oil
Trail Mix
And last but not least....
Freezy Pops and a cupcake for dessert.
Have you ever lived overseas?
Yes my memory is a bit hazy thank you to that devilish soju bowl....oh boy my head just hurts thinking about it.
Have you ever lived overseas?
I make them all myself. I was lucky to have a friend give me his family's recipe for bim bim bap.
Have you ever lived overseas?
I had the pleasure of growing up and living for 10 years in Jakarta, Indonesia (1984-1994). My family really took to local cuisine since the early part of our stay was before Duty-Free came along and American products became available. You can still find Sambal and Ketcap Manis in my fridge any day of the year. And canned (unfortunately) rambutans in my cupboards, those little jelly snacks that are bite-sized, and those shrimp crackers that would explode and grow when they are fried. I still make satay, nasi goreng, and bakmi goreng on a regular basis.
I also had the pleasure of being stationed in Taegu, South Korea for a couple of years. And let me tell you…I came home with a love of Korean food. I can eat bim bim bap or Korean BBQ anyday of the week everyday. Just thinking about yakimandu dipped in cheesy ramen is making my mouth water. But I can tell you one thing I came back with no love for…Soju…and that is only because I had way too much while I was over there. LOL.
You don't like that?!
I'm going to have to go with most fruit, candy, and above all baked ham.
Most unhealthy thing you have seen or eaten
Popular enough for my father to fry a turkey every other month...it is to die for!
DURANGO-- Serious Texas BBQ
Jean Pierre is one of my top places to grab lunch. I used to run there to get fresh baguettes on my lunch break between classes or a nice roasted vegetable sandwich.
Foods that make you ill?
I find that even after a glass I'm hurting the next morning...like today in fact.
Where to find San Marzano tomatoes near Woodridge
Thank you Ferret. I'll see what I can find at WF since I don't have a Costco membership.
Where to find San Marzano tomatoes near Woodridge
Does anybody know where I could find these? I'm going to be making a tomato sauce tonight and want to try out a new recipe. I don't want to travel too far being that it is a weeknight.
Thanks,
DURANGO-- Serious Texas BBQ
I am not on that forum but would be more than happy to give you some suggestions for your vacation to Chicago.
But I hope that you went to Oscar's for your breakfast in Durango.
what foods does your city have that mine doesn't?
Too bad I can't get roasted green chile here in Chicago...have to lug it back with me every time I see family.
But one thing you can't get in NM is a good hot dog.
Favorite sugar cereal? :)
Finally! I was wondering when Fruity Pebbles would get their props! Even to this day I can eat a box without even blinking an eye.
What was your favourite childhood concoction, which you now think is disgusting?
Ok now as I'm writing this I'm starting to think I have or "had" a thing for raw onions...my poor family...
Every Sunday I would microwave bread crackers topped with Kraft sliced cheese and raw onion slices for lunch and read up on my Sweet Valley High. (I think I just dated myself)
Another favorite was...which gag! I can't believe I ate...was hot dogs sliced with a side of cubed cheddar cheese and diced raw onion....oh and tons of ketchup.
Suffice to say that I don't eat that anymore...but my love for ham rolls with cream cheese and green onions still hold true today and embarrassingly enough I do still eat Hormel's tamales...even though I'm from NM and know that homemade tamales are a treasure of the soul.
Cheap, good lunches in Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Vernon Hills, et al.?
Mitsuwa is a regular lunch place for me. Their food court offers Japanese, Chinese, and Korean....anything from sushi and cold soba noodles to bim bim bap to fried dumplings. Word of warning though...it's cash only but there is an ATM in the market area.
I want to make "wet" macaroni & cheese
I hope it works for you. And I must thank you for this post...it's been ages since I've made this mac & cheese and it inspired me to do so last night. YUM!!!
