Kimlan Banh Mi Sandwiches [Wichita]

If you're a fan of a good sandwich, you have to try out Kimlan at 1035 N. Broadway. Ever since Wichita lost our beloved Mi Canh I've been suffering from a banh mi withdrawl, but no more. Wide variety of choices on the menu from pork, meatball (yummy), to cured pork and headcheese and yes... pate! You really can't go wrong here. Check it out Hounds.

Pork Terrine in KC

Thanks Lisa, I ended up at The Rieger Hotel that night and the bartender there did mention Aixois. The Rieger had a really good terrine, diced pork in a mint and herb aspic. Delicious! Ate at the bar and the bartender was great. Can't recommend The Rieger enough... but will always seek out a good terrine... so I'll be heading to Aixois next time I'm in town.

Pork Terrine in KC

In KC (Westport/Plaza Area) and wondered if anyone was making a good terrine? Ate at The Boot last night and the bartender mentioned that The Rieger does a pork terrine, and their online menu confirms it, but wondered if there were other options. Thx Hounds!

Kansas City restaurant recommendations please

I have to agree with the Accurso's req, but if your group is a fun loving, sort of crazy, has a sense of humor about the Italian joint you eat in... and I'm going to get hammered for even suggesting this by the other Hounds... you might be in the mood for Anthony's Restaurant and Lounge (701 Grand Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64106 (816) 221-4088). The decor is well... probably done by whatever fell off the back of the truck that day... but that being said... who doesn't look good in pink lighting? The food is 70's Italian and the sauce has that sweet taste that used to be popular back when I was a kid and didn't know better... but overall it's decent and in your price range. Check out the web site www.kcanthonysongrand.com/ and see for yourself. If you have a room at a hotel big enough and you're up for some good Italian takeout... drive to 103rd and Stateline and visit Marco Polo's Italian Market (1201 W 103rd St, Kansas City, MO 64114 (816) 941-6600). Get some pizzas, subs, salads, a Tuscan grilled chicken or two and have a feast on the cheap. Oh... and Berbiglia Wines and Spirits is right across the street for the vino. Marco Polo's is a part of Jasper's Restaurant hence the odd web address (www.jasperskc.com).

Blue corn enchiladas in Nebraska or Kansas

Blue Corn isn't a usual item in my area (Wichita) being that most authentic Mexican restaurants here are simply satisfied with masa, since Blue Corn is about 5X more expensive than regular masa. Given that... we have a growing number of traditional Mexican offerings that have forgone the usual Tex-Mex in order to offer very traditional Mexican food... which I always associated with "New Mexican" food. When I was in Sante Fe for a few months tasting the "New Mexican" menus of various restaurants, the taste would always take me back to properly prepared, traditional Mexican cuisine. Maybe a few mixing up of ingredients, but traditional. In Wichita try El Piasa on Arkansas Ave and 21st for consistent food. Very tasty. If you get to the KC area the North end of Southwest Traffic Way has a good variety of Taquería's to choose from... check the KC board for picks.

Coffee stops on roadtrip CA->AZ->NM->TX->OK->KS->MO->IA->MN

I'll chime in for the Wichita area... well at least my neighborhood. Watermark Books is a local bookstore with a great little cafe. Good for breakfast or lunch.

Another good local coffee shop on the east side is Il Primo. Has a to go window too.

Take Out For New Years Eve

Thanks Erik... Langenstein's is great! Apparently everyone else in the neighborhood thinks so too... it was packed... but packed full of goodness. Thanks again.

Take Out For New Years Eve

Renting a house in the Garden District during the holidays at the last minute and missed out on New Years Eve reservations, so thought we'd pick up some seafood and cook for ourselves. So the question is... where can you find some good takeout to fill in the meal? Was looking for gumbo, red beans and rice, dirty rice, decent bread, etc. Have a car, know the local transportation and willing to drive to the suburbs for something special. Thanks in advance.

Wichita/Haysville Restaurant for Gift Certificate for Family

Man!... wish I'd seen this sooner because I would have recommended Luciano's in Mulvane (just a short drive from Haysville). Great authentic Italian food from the kitchen of an authentic Italian... imagine that!

BBQ in Wichita?

Thought I'd add a recently opened BBQ joint to the thread. Froggar's, near 13th and Oliver has just opened and after a few trips to size them up I have to say that they do a really nice job at everything I've tried. Pulled pork is moist and smokey... probably the best I've had in town in a long time, ribs are just right, and the sides are obviously home made. Ever since Payne's closed I've been looking for something close to my neighborhood for my BBQ fix and Froggar's has filled that void. Check them out.

Week Between Xmas and New Years

Thanks for the replies. I haven't been to Cochon but I do have it on the short list of things to do (eat). I was wondering about Upperline too, as it's in the neighborhood and I haven't been there either. Oh... and the Green Goddess... it's new to me too. Thanks guys, I appreciate the rec's.

Thanks for the update Bim... have heard of the place but have not had the chance to get there yet. So what did you like? Or is it a nightly menu? Even better if it is.

Week Between Xmas and New Years

I'm a NOLA fan from way back and my family and I have rented a house near Coliseum Square park for the week following Christmas, and staying through January 3rd. Doing the usual restaurants, Commanders for lunch, Brigtsen's, Patois, Coquette (since I can walk there... duh), and I'm dying to try Reconcile which is in the neighborhood. Thing is... what am I missing since we've never spent Xmas vacation in NOLA. Insights for the season would be much appreciated, as well as good restaurants near that area that I might miss. Have a car, know the area transit system, and willing to travel to something special. Oh... another thing... fishing. If you have any recommendations on getting me out of the house for a few hours with either a fly rod or a spinner rig I would deliver the fish to your door. Because polite vacation house renters never cook fish. Thanks in advance!

Wichita Kansas?

I'll second the Hana Cafe rec, I ate there the other day and had a terrific Kalbi bento box. I would add Lucianos located in Mulvane (216 W Main St, Mulvane, KS 67110, south of Wichita about 15 miles). An Italian restaurant owned by an actual Italian... will wonders ever cease? Good fresh food in a nice comfortable atmosphere. Service can be spotty... mostly high school aged kids from a small town... but all in all I like the place. I would also recommend Bel Ami (229 East William Street, Wichita, KS) which is downtown, and the great thing about this place is you can call a couple of days ahead and they'll make anything you want. I ordered grilled duck breast in a wine reduction for my birthday and it was perfectly prepared. Rare. Do a search in Chow under Thai Lao for one of the best dives in Wichita serving Laotian food. Seriously good and cheap. SW corner of Hillside and Pawnee behind the Super Del Centro grocery store.

Best burgers in Kansas

I have to throw out Ty's Diner here in Wichita as a terrific burger joint. Thin, crispy burgers, available with anything you could want in the way of traditional condiments. Plus, hand cut fries and those tempting corn fritters. Ty's detractors have a slew of complaints... it's greasy, it's run down, the bathrooms aren't up to date... but the constant line out the door of people waiting for a bun full of burger heaven proves that you can't beat a good old burger joint. If I eat there at lunch, upon returning to the lab, people can actually smell the place on me and immediately want to know why I was selfish and didn't take them. It's that good.

Wichita - Tony's Tacos

Well, for an update... I did get around to trying the rellenos, a personal favorite of mine when done right. I have to say that they let me down a bit. Anaheims for the peppers, and no ranchero sauce... but I did get it to go that day and I didn't ask about sauce. So my bad I guess. On the plus side, everything else is just great. The Colorado Burrito was HUGE and could feed a family of four, nicely spiced and just under $5. And the taquitos with the guac and cheese have become an after job snack. Delicious.

Wichita - Tony's Tacos

OK Hounds, housed in a former Dairy Queen on East Central is a little slice of heaven named Tony’s Tacos which is not just a taco joint but has a large variety to choose from… burritos, tortas, tostadas, enchiladas and of course various combo plates. One of the best aspects of Tony’s is that Tony opens at 7 AM and is directly in my path to the university. Can you say Huevos Rancheros and Breakfast Burritos? Two double tortillas, two eggs, rice and beans for 5 bucks? Crazy. How about Machaca and Eggs? This place is the bomb and there’s nothing on the menu over $7. I ate there four times this week and I’ll be back for more next week. Very authentic food, very well prepared and I hope the guy shuts down every Taco Bell in town with the food he’s throwing out. Help me out Hounds… try Tony out and help me preserve my slice of heaven in the morning… and at noon… and on the way home.

Wichita Wine

I'd second the Jacob's recommendation, but add Groves at Webb and Kellogg. The same selection at prices that simply cannot be beat. Don't be put off by the exterior looks... this store is the real deal. If it's available in Kansas they'll be happy to get it if they don't stock it. Ask for Jeff.

[Wichita] Thai-Lao Cafe a winner!

I ate there about 6 weeks ago, again a great meal and yes... same weird place. So as of then it's still in business. Hope you enjoy it. If it's not open venture south about 6-7 blocks to My Canh.

Kansas hounds: Bierocks?

Odd to think that dumplings can only be fried or steamed... Europeans just made them bigger and more prone to baking, and that can be a good thing. I grew up in the Midwest and Bierocks were everywhere and usually a staple at most small town restaurants whose heredity was Eastern European. Love them when I can get them, but it seems a dying art.

fried onion burgers [El Reno, OK]

I was through there the other day and ate at Johnnie's Grill (301 S. Rock Island Ave) and had a great onion burger...as well as...and this was worth the trip for me...chocolate cake! There is also Sid's down the street (300 S Choctaw Ave) which I understand is quite good too. Happy eating!

CSA in (or near) Wichita, Kansas

Sorry to say... I don't know of any CSA farms in our area either, so we all do the next best thing and use our very nice farmers markets that are available on both the East and West sides of town. Other than that I would advise you to check the local paper under the "Good Things To Eat" category for fresh offerings from the farms directly. I personally like Beck's Farms which is just South of Newton. Also look for roadstands South of town near Haysville, and if you see a fresh produce sign in someone's yard, don't be shy about knocking on the door. Good luck in your sleuthing, unfortunately it's something we're used to doing in Wichita.

Moving to Manhattan, KS

My absolute favorite in The Little Apple is the Hibachi Hut, 608 N 12th St. There's very little hibachi about it, but it is a great dive with great food. Sorry I'm not up on other Manhattan joints, because you can't pry me out of the place. And remember... you're just under 2 hours away from Kansas City. We used to go KC roadtripping all the time when I was at KSU.

SE Kansas

After being unemployed since October, I have been granted a new contract position by the USDA to do a survey of Southeastern Kansas crops this season. So I'm looking for advice in finding some decent places to eat while on Uncle Sam's dime. Help me out hounds!

Ice Cream parlours in Wichita Area

Sadly most of the independents have been run out of business by the efficiency of the chains. My aunt and uncle used to have a Tastee Freeze and simply saw their profit margins run too thin to stay in business much past the 70's. Some of the new independent gelatto shops are pretty good...Cafe Posto, which is my neighborhood in College Hill, is pretty good in my opinion. Look for it near the NW corner of Oliver and Douglas.

Ice Cream parlours in Wichita Area

Only one place for you my friend... Old Mill Tasty Shop. 604 E. Douglas. You can thank me by buying me a Turtle Sundae. It's your dream come true with a soda fountain and some of the best food in the downtown area. Blue plate specials every day and the friendliest staff you'll find anywhere. Have fun!

Wichita - Dinner Recs for Chatty Customers

OK, there are a few restaurants that I'd recommend and I'll provide the links so you can look at the menus and pricing.
First is Uptown Bistro which is on the Southwest end of Old Town Square and features continental food, Mediterranean, but approachable for most appetites. Food is very good as is the service.
http://www.uptownbistrowichita.com
Second is again Larkspur, nice established place with good reputation. I personally haven't eaten there in a while but I hear no complaints from friends who do frequent it.
http://www.larkspuronline.com
My personal favorite is Sabor, which is a Latin restaurant but has a nice offering of more "American" dishes. Dynamite food which is quite affordable in my opinion, and owned by the same owner as the Uptown Bistro, so you know he's doing something right.
http://www.saborwichita.com
This last pick has an unknown quality to it, a new British chef who I hear is very good but I have never been there since he was hired, the Caffe Moderne. It's been known for sandwiches, soups and salads, but with the new chef you might at least want to give them a call and see what the specials are that evening.
http://www.caffemoderne.com/
Good luck in Wichita, hope you and your friends have a wonderful time.
