Fromager D'Affinois in Los Angeles Area?

Hi Everyone,

I fell in love with this cheese -- and when I tried the garlic herb version, heavenly music played.

I know Artisan Cheese Gallery and Wally's carry this type of cheese, but does anyone know of any other stores? I have heard of Whole Foods in other states carrying it.

Also, I would be very excited to find the garlic herb type.

tia!

Non Chocolate Ganache-Type Filling for Macarons?

I recently tried macarons from Paulette in Beverly Hills. The filling for many of the flavors didn't seem like a butter cream. It seemed more like a gel-like, gooey, ganache type filling. Can anyone suggest something similar?

tia for any suggestions.

Create Your Own Stir Fry in the Los Angeles Area?

So I guess it is safe to assume that a place like this that uses woks does not exist in the Los Angeles area?

Create Your Own Stir Fry in the Los Angeles Area?

Hi,

I am looking for a create your own stir fry restaurant in the Los Angeles area.

The restaurant I am thinking of from my hometown of Chicago is called Stir Crazy Cafe. The restaurant has an Asian type menu. You select chicken, beef, strip or tofu, the waiter/waitress gives you a ticket and a bowl. At the vegetable type salad bar you select the raw vegetables you want, pick out your sauce of choice and hand it off to the chef, who cooks it in a wok.

I would call this Mongolian BBQ, but the one time I went to a Mongolian BBQ place, everything was cooked on a flat grill and therefore was quite dry.

I did find a place like this in the Manhattan Beach area, but they used frozen meat, which didn't turn out very well.

I would be very grateful if anyone could suggest such a place. As a finicky eater, I like to be able to select my own ingredients.

Thank you!

Need a bakery for a birthday cake (8"-10" round) under $30, hopefully in the SF Valley

I am trying to find a bakery that makes good cakes that will not charge me an arm and a leg.

I tried order a birthday cake from Portos, and it would be $20 for a 9" round cake, but they refuse to decorate it with any kind of theme. Which I found really annoying.

Can anyone suggest a bakery that makes good cake, that will make a decorated 8"-10" round two layer cake for under $30?

I live in Santa Clarita, so it would be great if the bakery was no further than the SF Valley.

tia for any help.

Sushi suggestion (like LA's Katsu-ya) in Chicago?

Sushi suggestion (like LA's Katsu-ya) in Chicago?

I am visiting family in Chicago for the holidays. I was hoping to find a sushi place that serves sushi rolls similar to Katsu-ya in Los Angeles.

The two rolls I fell in love with:
A spicy tuna roll (in soy paper) topped with a tempura shrimp in a sauce & a baked crab (real crab) roll.

Can anyone suggest a sushi place that serves something similar? Downtown or South suburbs would be ideal, if possible. tia

Something similar to Katsu-ya, but on the west side?

That is so nice of you.

The stand outs for me were the spicy shrimp roll, a baked crab roll and rock shrimp tempura (a tempura shrimp in a sauce on the top of a roll). And the miso soup was great.

Something similar to Katsu-ya, but on the west side?

Judging by their website, it looks super trendy. I wanted to take my dad someplace he would feel comfortable... If any of you have been there, what is the atmosphere like? tia.

Something similar to Katsu-ya, but on the west side?

I recently had sushi at Katsu-ya in Studio City. I loved everything I had.

I was hoping they would have another location on the west side, but their website only lists places in the Valley.

Can someone please suggest a place similar to it that is located on the west side? (By similar I mean the food... I don't care about a trendy atmosphere.)

tia for any suggestions!

Mid-range weekend brunch in LA or SFV?

Hi,

I am looking for a nice weekend buffet brunch (with good food!) in LA or SFV... nothing too fancy, I'd like to go in a tshirt and jeans. I wouldn't want to spend more than $30 a person.

tia for any suggestions.

Where to find (good) Petit Fours in the LA area?

That is RIGHT by my new job! I will have to check it out on my way home. Thanks for the suggestion!

Where to find (good) Petit Fours in the LA area?

I was wondering if anyone knew where one could find good petit fours in the LA area? By good, I mean obviously tasty, but not dry.

tia for any tips!

What type of beef to use in beef fried rice?

I would like to try to make beef fried rice. I read a bunch of great marinating tips on the board, but I didn't see any suggestions as to what type of beef to buy.

What do you guys recommend?

Good clam chowder somewhere between Venice & Redondo beach? hopefully with an ocean view

Thank you for all your suggestions. I am a New England Clam Chowder lover, so I will eventually get to all of these places. :)

We ended up at Fat Face Fenners Fishshack, and although they were out of clam chowder, their lobster chowder was great. We had a lovely afternoon before mom had to go home. Thank you for the suggestion.

Where to find sour cherries (not canned)?

Wow! That sounds like a lot of fun. I'm going to look into that. Great suggestion, thanks.

Good clam chowder somewhere between Venice & Redondo beach? hopefully with an ocean view

Hi Everyone,

I am taking my mom to the airport tomorrow (LAX). We wanted to stop for lunch somewhere sort of close by for lunch. We looooove clam chowder and an ocean view would be an excellent add in.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Where to find sour cherries (not canned)?

Thank you!

Where to find sour cherries (not canned)?

I live in the Los Angeles area, so I imagine if it can be found it should be possible here... I am looking for sour cherries to make a pie. I do not want canned cherries.

Would sour cherries from a jar or frozen cherries be a better option? And can anyone suggest where I might find them? tia for any help.

The only frozen cherries I have found at my grocery store are sweet.

Searching for stores that would carry Wusthof classic cook's knives (wide blade).

I have been searching for a good, heavy cook's knife for some time. I believe I would like the Wusthof classic wide blade series. But, obviously, I would like to see it in person, not order it from amazon.com.

If anyone knows of a store that carries this particular knife, I would be grateful to hear about it. I live in the Los Angeles area. tia!

"Clam base" for New England Clam Chowder? Also: do you use potatoes as a thickener?

I have tried making clam chowder myself several times. All the recipes I have found suggest using "clam juice" in the soup. But clam juice never seems to add the clam flavor you find in a good cup of restaurant style chowder. Usually the soup turns out disappointing.

My question is, would any of you suggest using clam base? And if so, is there any brand you prefer?

Also, I have heard of people using potatoes potatoes as a thickener in lieu of flour. Does anyone recommend that?

tia for any suggestions.

Brands to check out for a heavier chef's knife with a wide blade?

My stepfather has a great chef's knife that bought at Jewel (a grocery store) some years back. On a recent visit home, I used this knife and I was very impressed with it.

It was about 10" long and it had a thick blade. It was fairly heavy and was great for chopping things like potatoes. I have a Santoku knife and while it is very nice, I would like something with more weight.

Do any of you knife connoisseurs have suggestions for brands that I could look into for a similar knife? tia for any suggestions!

Looking for a sauce for lobster tails -- any suggestions? rop

I've had it grilled and it was ok, but the best lobster I ever had came with a cream sauce (I don't know the name) and so that is what I am looking for.
