Food that Most People Love and You Don't...
i too am cursed with a dislike for raw tomatoes and oh how i wished i loved them! i have tried so hard to like them, but its something about a raw tomato makes me gag...it is the bane of my food existence.
second on that list is mushrooms...although i am not nearly as upset about disliking them.
What's the #1 Thing That You Eat and Say, "Wow That REALLY Hit The Spot"?
For me it nearly always involves peanut butter: toasted cinnamon-raisin bagel, a healthy slathering of peanut butter, a slightly unripe banana, and a drizzle of honey. this is a meal that NEVER lets me down...simple but sublime and always hits the spot.
Hot Chocolate: Marshmallow or Whipped Cream?
I am totally with you on the marshmallows, there is no other way to go for me. There is nothing quite like the gooey outside of a marshmallow that has been sitting in a hot cup of cocoa!
What are Balt most over-rated Restaurants?
I agree, all my experiences at the Helmand have been stellar...it is a place I want to return to again and again.
On the overrated side: Amicci's
This place makes me so mad. Its the place to go in Little Italy and yet nothing there is even a little authentic, it is the same cheese-laden, weak tomato-sauce, carbo-loaded American style Italian food that you can get at any chain. Why there is such a fuss is beyond me.
Woodberry Kitchen
I had my graduation meal here, it was fantastic! They served me a wonderful dessert on the house and took a photo of my entire party and printed it out for me. My sister had the shrimp with noodles and still talks about it 2 months later. I had the pork buns which were just wonderful. The setting was fantastic, maybe a little tight, but just beautiful. This was one of the best dining experiences I had during my 4 years in Baltimore.
You don't like that?!
I completely agree with the raw tomatoes, blue cheese, mushrooms, veal ( i also havent tried it but cant bring myself too). i wish so badly that i could enjoy raw tomatoes because im sure i am missing out on so many fantastic foods but no matter how many times i try, i just cant do it...
What food find still haunts you - that you had once and haven't found since?
I have two food experiences that i still think about:
the first comes form my mother who is a fantastic cook. i was at sleep away camp and when my parents came to visit she brought me a slice of a white chocolate cheesecake she had made the night before. it was topped with an incredibly raspberry sauce. maybe it was the prolonged exposure to camp food, but it was divine. something about the subtle white chocolate with the vibrant raspberry...just wonderful!
my second "haunting" food experience came when we traveled to southern Germany. in a tiny little converted house we stopped for dinner and along with my main course came a heaping helping of buttery, warm spaetzle with little flecks of parsley. they were the epitome of comfort food.
What is the quintessential food of your town?
I am happy to be the first to mention Philadelphia and our wonderful contributions to the culinary world:
wiz wit or wit out (a cheesesteak with cheese wiz and friend onions)
Tastykake, the butterscotch krimets are deeply ingrained in my childhood memories
Hoagie, this is just a sub but for some reason all southeast PA-er's call it a hoagie
pickled watermelon rind- this is an Amish specialty and much better than it sounds
scrapple, not a personal favorite but a philadelphia-region specialty for sure.
i hope other Philadelphian's add on to this short list, i know im missing things!
A Eulogy for the Shopping Mall: What are/were your favorite food court foods?
I have the fondest memories of Auntie Anne's cinnamon-sugar pretzels and licking all the sugary goodness from my hands! Im sure it was a nightmare for my parents, but those mall food memories will be with me forever!
