No Reservations - Cook it Raw
Have to agree...it was a really great show. I think the entire new season has been exceptional. He's really cut back on the snark and is finding some really interesting food destinations. And I love Zamir.
Red Rock Barbecue, Ypsilanti

Wurst Bar to Open in Ypsilanti
Update on my first posting! OK, went back last night. It was pretty quiet, but was there fairly early in the evening. Had the pear cider, nice and dry, not too carbonated and their southerner burger...fried green tomato, pimento cheese & bacon on a pretzel bun. Very very good. I will have to make sure to try their side salads or soup next time. BF had a few pints of Dark Horse and the lamb/bison merguez. Chatted with the owner, Jesse. He's got some great ideas to keep the menu fresh. There was also a crawfish boudin available and he talked about an upcoming rattlesnake chorizo.
There is wine on the drinks menu, starting today (Tuesday). A viognier, and two good reds. They also had shots of something called Bull Dawg, a Michigan-made herb liquor similar to Jager, but I was not up to that last night.
So, get yerself over to Wurst Bar, fellow Chowhounders.

Oh, didn't want to come across as whiney (winey?)...I think the cider is a great alternative to beer. Well, anyway, I'm hoping to stop by again very soon.

I did ask for it, and they were out. I'd be happy with a couple of reds and a couple of whites. I usually drink wine when I socialize, and I can drink quite a bit of it, beer, not so much. Hey, I'd be helping their biz with a bigger bar tab!

I stopped in on Sunday afternoon and am really happy with everything we had. First of all, I've found my official neighborhood bar (I'm within walking distance) and the fact that they serve great food is a big bonus. They were out of a few things; our very attentive server Wendy explained that they didn't expect to be so busy on their first week. I had a well-spiced boerewors on a pretzel roll with sauteed onions, and some of their terrific house made pickles and kimchi kraut. The tables are set up with several kinds of mustard, too, which is a nice touch, as is having the food served in a tin meatloaf pan.
BF had the nut burger on brioche--cheddar, bacon and his favorite food in the whole world, peanut butter. It was pretty tasty. A side of crispy tots. We wanted to try the sweet potato ones, but alas, they were out.
They have a lot of brews available, and the selection ranges from Dark Horse all the way down to Blatz in a can. Hey, it IS across from EMU. BF had a couple pints of Hopslam on tap. I had a Scotty Karate ale. Actually, I'm a wine drinker, but there was none to be had. Wendy said she'd speak with the beverage manager about that. I switched over to the Michigan-made Hard Luck Candy vodka--orange cream mixed with club soda and a slice of orange. Those were just way too good.
Ambiance is very comfortable. I had never been in Theo's (the previous incarnation) but I was assured it's been much improved. Don't know what it's like with the DJ playing in the back room and students running around, it was pretty quiet when I was there.
Looking forward to going back. It's certainly a nice addition to the area and I hope they are able to keep up with the high quality of the food and service.
Wurst Bar to Open in Ypsilanti
Drove by on my way home last night...it is indeed open, the new sign "THE WURST BAR" shining in red like a welcoming beacon. I am going to try and check it out this weekend. Just a couple reviews (good!) on Yelp right now.

FYI, Wurst Bar did not open as planned yesterday. They were waiting for delivery of some lighting. Looks like it will be Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest.
Why aren't we talking about Biercamp in A2? [Ann Arbor, MI]
If you check out their Facebook page, they update with what's being freshly made, along with some pricing. I have got to get over there!

I tried Corridor for the first time recently. Very good! I purchased their venison/blueberry at the Holiday Pop-up Market in the old Mongolian Grill space in Ypsi. Still have the lamb/fig in the freezer.
I'm pleased to see more dining options in Ypsi. Also looking forward to Red Rock BBQ opening over on Michigan Ave., should be soon.

I'm really hoping it does well. It's scheduled to open this weekend, in the former Theo's space. The menu looks great...nice to find something a little unusual. Kimchi kraut, pimento cheese, lamb and bison merguez? I'm there!

Eat Right America. Anyone attempting this?
Eight weeks on a vegan diet obviously did you a lot of good, and that's wonderful. Anyone who has been living on the SAD diet of processed foods, industrial vegetable oils and HFCS is going to show an improvement. It is impossible to turn the world vegan. I don't think the Inuit and the Masai are going to start downing wheatgrass smoothies any time soon.
Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 4th quarter 2011 [OLD]
Yay for the Thai green papaya salad in the freezer section!
Kimchi in Metro Detroit?
Oh yeah, that Korean fried chicken is fantastic! Worth the wait. Must try the spam kim bob rolls next. I used to live just down the street from Manna and shopped there a lot.
Kimchi in Metro Detroit?
You might want to try this place on the edge of Ann Arbor. It's a great Korean grocery.

I make my own, it's not that hard. My BF hates the stuff so I have to ferment it outside on the back porch. I'd recommend buying Sandor Katz's "Wild Fermentation" book. It's got a lot of great recipes.
Looking for Kombucha Starter in Ann Arbor
Thanks for all the help hounds! I really like Unity Vibrations. I have met the owners/brewers a few times--most recently at the Ypsi Beer Festival and A2 Homegrown Festival.
Looking for Kombucha Starter in Ann Arbor
Hi all,
I'm a big fan of kombucha, but the price of a bottle of it is turning it into a once-in-a-while purchase. Since I'm a big do-it-yourselfer in the kitchen, I'm ready to start making my own. I know I can buy these online, but was wondering if there is anywhere in the Ann Arbor/Ypsi area to purchase this.
[DTW] Pigs in MI
My BF and I and another couple purchased a hog at the Washtenaw 4-H Fair livestock auction this past week. It was an interesting experience, especially seeing your food on the hoof. Nice to meet the kid that raised the hog for market. The entire purchase price goes to the boy or girl, so it's a great cause.
Do you enjoy sugar-free and/or low fat products even though you're not on a diet?
Fat is very satisfying...that's why you get full on a smaller amount of it. We're so full-fat phobic!
Vegetarian transitioning to omnivore lifestyle -- any advice?
I try to keep low-carb, but I love pizza and the occasional pasta dish. I find that I feel much less achey and tired with minimal grains. Some people do just fine on vegetarian (not so much vegan) diets, but it isn't for everyone.
Waiting on delivery of a 1/4 grass-fed steer from a local farm this week, by the way!
Vegetarian transitioning to omnivore lifestyle -- any advice?
Greetings! ! I'm not in your neck of the woods, but you might find this website very helpful.
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/
It's a site devoted to the paleo/primal way of eating, but there are many links with comments from former vegans and vegetarians that are making the transition back to eating meat. And they stress that one should avoid factory-farmed meat and eating local/sustainable as much as possible.
Are you doing this for health reasons? Many veggies are finding that their health has suffered by avoiding animal products.
Knife Sharpening - Ann Arbor Area
I think the place you are thinking of is at the corner of Packard/Carpenter, next to the White Castle. It's a vacuum sales/repair place. You can go eat dim sum at Great Lake Seafood right behind there! I did see the knife sharpeners at the farmer's market on Saturday.
Besides the obvious pies, what will you serve for Thanksgiving dessert?
Indian pudding, served up with vanilla ice cream. Takes a long time to bake and it's not pretty, but it's good!

Casual Business Dinner Near Navy Pier?
I'm going to be in Chicago for a conference this weekend and have been asked to come up with a nice place for dinner next Monday evening. I was thinking Bistro 110 or Shaw's. My dining companions are all female. One thinks Cheesecake Factory is awesome, another can't stand the sight of sushi, so there ya go. Not very adventurous eaters, alas.
Doesn't have to be within walking distance...we can cab it. We don't need to impress clients and even though it's going to be on the company tab, we're a small company, so can't get too high-end.

Canning newbie - converting apple sauce to apple butter with pectin?
I just made apple butter this weekend. My recipe called for first boiling down apple cider (6 cups down to 3), then adding the apples. The cider turns syrupy and adds sweetness and color. You do have to spend a lot of time cooking and stirring until it gets dark enough. There's just no way around that. I also added some cinnamon and allspice. I also pressure canned it since there was no additional acid, but a lot of the recipes I saw went with water-bath canning.
Best BBQ-- Ann Arbor, MI
I live just a few minutes from there, and I really like it. Make sure you try the beef ribs whenever they are available.
Best BBQ-- Ann Arbor, MI
So that's where he's gone to! I used to go to the Northfield Roadhouse all the time and was so sorry to see it close down.
Raw olives for curing Ypsi/Ann Arbor
Definitely will check out the Eastern Market. Thanks! I have a fantastic old pickling crock just begging to be used.
Raw olives for curing Ypsi/Ann Arbor
I'm looking for a source for raw olives to cure. I did this many years ago in Chicago and obtained them from an Italian market. Any ideas where I can get them around here? And would they even be available right now?
A Recent Review of Roast, Detroit MI - Giving Symon a Second Chance!
Thanks for a delicious review! I have been to Roast twice and had a wonderful experience both times. I loved your "$12 lunchmeat" phrase. I had the charcuterie the last visit, and could have just made my meal out of maybe three or four orders of that divine stuff. I did have the suckling pig as my entree, fried brussell sprouts on the side. Fabulous.
I have his "Live to Cook" cookbook and am making his recipe for braised shortribs for the second time this evening. There's many recipes that he uses in his restaurants. I highly recommend the book.
