Legendary simple burger joint in CT

I recall that in their swansong issue, Gourmet magazine did a feature on the best roadside burgers. They described at seasonal Connecticut joint that server great hamburgers -- on white toast as they had for years. I think it was off the Merritt Parkway - but I could be hoping that was the case.

I'm light on details. ... Can anyone resurrect this memory or make a substitute recommendation for a trip North on the Merritt Parkway on Sunday afternoon?

Dexter oyster knives, and prices of oysters at fish stores...

I now make Whole Foods my go-to for oysters. They stick to a $.99 policy and their quality control/volume means fewer disappointments than my inland fish markets.

Moles on the Peninsula?

Yes, it is a passionate topic that inspires strong opinions -- but the OP has received some good advice -- general purpose and mole-specific. Since you have settled in San Carlos, your best candidate for a regular - a go-to -- is going to be Redwood City. Broadway is your walking village and worth exploring.

Amelia's is on Broadway in RWC and an informal Salvadorean/Mexican restaurant. When they have Mole on the specials list, it is worth paying attention

Po's Ribs and Barbecue, Acton

I made a quick stop -- on my own -- for the pulled pork sandwich one weekday evening about 10 days ago. It is not a traditional BBQ restaurant but the sandwich was really good - piled high and very tasty. Sloppy Joe-style hamburger bun; average coleslaw. for $7. We are in such a Chow wasteland out here that I cannot resist grading on the curve but it was good enough that I will go back with friends and try the ribs.

lunch in Andover (Shawsheen Village)

I have been working near SV for about 2.5 years and have few chow-worthy recommendations. Yes, the Lawrence explorations are the best surprises (Cafe Aztec) has above the mean Mexican. I find myself drawn to grazing at Whole Foods on Railroad Ave (half sandwiches, slice of artichoke pizza, self-assembled antipasta salad.

I have tried the new Mediterranian place on Post Office Way. I was disappointed that it was sit-down only. They need a quicker (and slightly cheaper) option.

Great Thai in Boston or Brookline?

What is your favorite Thai dish? I ask because it would help me (and others) to determine your criteria. Are you a seafood claypot fan? are the fishcakes your litmus test?

Concord, MA Restaurants

Yes, its hard not to reflexively grade on a curve. There is still a vaccum of chow-worthy eats in this vector.

Does Sushi House really warrant a "GOOD"? Once on a September weeknight was enough to make me write the place off for good. Pre-sliced fish? Really?

Grinders-East Bay

Jersey Joe's in San Carlos does a decent job of assembling what I knew as a Jersey specialty; Italian cold cuts LOTS of shreaded lettuce, onion and thinly sliced tomato and the oil & vinegar with that herb thing going on. I always go "extra wet" at Jersey Joes

Cape Cod Oysters close to the source

Years ago, I enjoyed oysters on Wellfleet Harbor at the Bookstore Restaurant/Pub. The oyster man would occasionally sit at the bar when he brought in the harvest. Any recent experiences at this place? Now I realize 'Wellfleet Oysters' is primarily a branding exercise - but I do like the idea of patronizing the small farmers who work their plots on the outer Cape.

Any sources of oysters close to the source? shucked or at market?

Mid/Outer Cape Italian BYOB?

Thanks. We will try that one next time.
Well, hitting the Mid-Cape in the depths of Winter took me back 20 years to when you really had to travel for a meal in the off-season.

We ended up at ABBA in Orleans and had a nice meal. The Israeli influence I see on the web menu has been muted somewhat by some Thai and other interesting influences.

Grilled Fois Gras over a lentil salad ringed by a honey ginger sauce was a nice adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed it ; my wife loved the lentils but was a little but off by some stringiness in the FG.

A Grilled Bay Scallop and Eggplant appetizer sounded like a good way to be sure we took in the Israeli influences. A sage, garlic butter sauce was fabulous. The large section of eggplant was served cold - its flavors were diffused or just did not work for me. I wouldn't repeat this one (despite being a huge fan of Mediterranean food in just about any form.)

Grilled Tuna with tempura nori rolls was a very strong entry. The tuna cut was sublime and finished a perfect medium rare. I did not "get" the tempura + nori roll - until I saw it with my own eyes. The tempura is very light and it delivers a great "baked alaska" sensation.

Wine list is one of the best I have seen on the Cape. When I do return, I'll plan to tap some of he California selections (Merry Edwards, Pride) We had started the evening with a Turley Zin so we were interested in the wines by the glass. Here ABBA is quite disappointing. 4 unmemorable reds that do not do the food justice.

Oysters to bring home?

At first I was a little put off when I talked to Atlantic Sea Grill (Concord/Acton) about their "blue points". I'm a B&G fan and I have become accustomed to knowing the real location. But I took 2 dozen and they were fabulous. I paid $1.29/each.

I would not have guessed that WF would be competitive- now I know.

BTW, I'll go back to Atlantic to try their little lunch bar.

Mid/Outer Cape Italian BYOB?

I need to take the soundings from the Cape Cod crew. A romantic weekend (this weekend) -- we will be based in East Harwich.

My ideal is Northern Italian with a BYOB policy - but I am flexible. I have a few choice reds that are calling to be released from the cellar.

Good Italian food of any influence would be fabulous. I'd prefer not to head for Hyannis but don't mind a drive to outer Cape. I'm trying to steer away from the pure seafood play as my wife is not as much of a shellfish fanatic as I am. (although she has come a long way).

ALSO, I have some sparse details about a wine bar on 6A in Brewster (?) near the post office. Can anyone give me current status and recommendation on this one?

Moving to Cape- who are the local CH's?

Thanks. I need an address

Places no one posts about on the Cape

There is a lot to like about the 400. They serve food late (+9PM) all year; the bartenders are competent; I find it an easy place to strike up a conversation.

But on the chow scale, it is right down the middle. There is someone back there who puts energy into the menu, but I do not see local products - even seafood - the product is limited by its raw materials all come off the SYSCO truck.

wine available at winery only

You will not have any trouble getting recent recomendation for a trip up Rt 29. I'll try a contrarian approach.

I understand that Napa & Sonoma have the brand appeal; especially for folks back East. I would consider a (much shorter) drive to Livermore Valley. The wine making history there is rich and the values considerably better.

Thos Coyne and Murrieta's Well are two of my favorie stops. I get a mixed case here of wonderfully delicious surprises (wines your friends have not heard of) for the price of 3 bottles in the Napa Valley
