Suggestions for Lunch or Dinner - Cobble Hill or Brooklyn Heights

I agree that Colonie is the cream of the neighborhood and recommend it wholeheartedly. If you end up needing a less formal 2nd meal, think about Mile End (for lunch, with dinner at Colonie topping off a great day).

Note that at Colonie you may need to wait.

For what it's worth, I interpreted Peter's comment as:

(a) Jack is an excellent neighborhood but NOT the one place to choose if from OUT of town, and
(b) Henry's End is tired.

Broken English - Any recent experience (revamped menu)?

It's already on OpenTable, with a profile seemingly right out of 2010 but with reservations available as soon as tonight. Interesting.

Friends in town with small kids--Recs on Court or Smith?

All along Smith and Court, kids are commonplace at all but the hautest places. Unless he's exceedingly patient (more so than many parents), you'll want a reservation. Buttermilk will give you one for a big group, also consider Watty and Meg (Court/Kane) or Strong Place (Court/Kane-Degraw).

Is he eating too? Consider Bocca Lupo (Henry/Warren), very good neighborhood place with good adult food/drink that also has a kids menu (that you'll be sampling too)

Pizza: Lucali, Roberta's, or Paulie Gee's?

Where in the Slope are you? Lucali is a quick (3-4 block) walk from the Carroll Street F/G train, and a block away from Clinton Street (parallel to Henry, the street Lucali is on) which is usually the go-to for taxis in Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens. (I don't know if lower Clinton has the usual cab presence due to some construction blocking traffic 4 blocks north of where Lucali is, but I suspect there are still some around.) But a car service will certainly come, it's well within the beaten path and probably not too much of a $$$ difference to just go back to Park Slope.

Battersby: tasting menu or regular?

We did the "spontaneous tasting menu" (didn't need to reserve it, it's on the menu) and enjoyed it greatly.

Battersby screwed me, need restaurant suggestion ASAP

If Battersby sounded good to you I recommend either Colonie or Seersucker, heartily. I wouldn't call them pretentious but some might - a more traditional place that is no less good is Locanda Vini e Olii in Fort Greene.

Colonie does not take reservations, though you shouldn't need to wait much or at all on a Tuesday. Food is fantastic and lots of choices small and large. www.colonienyc.com

I've eaten at Seersucker a couple of times and been quite happy with it. They take reservations through opentable, and there is availability tonight. www.seersuckerbrooklyn.com.

Locanda Vini e Olii - outstanding italian in an adorable old pharmacy setting. also take reservations, also availability tonight online. www.locandavinieolii.com.

Enjoy, happy birthday to your husband!

Wings - Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens/Downtown area

You're not going to see much love for Lobo (Court St. in Cobble Hill) on this board, and I agree their Tex-Mex is acceptable at best, but I really do like their wings. They come with a big bag of chips with the most amazing chipotle sauce that I dream about*. Wings, salsa, chips, chipotle sauce, I could do it every night. Try it.

* I think the sauce is meant for the wings, but they can't control what I do. Can't spell chipotle without chip anyway.

Restaurant Ideas for a Wedding Present?

Our favorite in the Heights/Cobble/Carroll corridor continues to be Colonie (www.colonienyc.com), which on Atlantic Avenue is an easy walk from CG. Depending on your friends' appetites $150 will cover either the whole meal or the majority of it. For reference, my wife and I went this weekend for our anniversary -- 2 entrees, 2 salads, 1 small plate pasta, no desserts, 3 cocktails ran $165 with tip. Hip atmosphere (but fine for the less-hip like us!), consistently good food and drink, potentially long waits.

In the winter, also consider Henry's End (www.henrysend.com) up in Brooklyn Heights. Long-ish walk from CG, but closer than Williamsburg. I wouldn't call it fancy exactly, but it is a special neighborhood-vibe place, with an excellent game menu you won't find anywhere else around here (and not super pricey but enough that a gift card could be put to good use). If that's their kind of thing, consider it.

Both of these places offer gift cards.

Yet another "place for a group" thread - (not a reserved room, just "hey, meet us here for drinks!")

Brooklyn Inn is a great idea (I was actually thinking about its sister Roebling Inn as well), except they're both cash only and we'd prefer to run a tab.

I was considering Last Exit or Brazen Head as pretty laid back places with good beer selections and outdoor space.

Yet another "place for a group" thread - (not a reserved room, just "hey, meet us here for drinks!")

Yes, this again. Looking to pick a bar in the Cobble Hill metro area to meet up with friends on our anniversary after dinner. Saturday night in early August. This is not a "rent the back room of Clover Club" type of thing (though if there are bars that have cut rates in the summer we'd consider it), more like somewhere we can tell everyone we know "we'll be at ____ starting at 9 or so, come on out and the first couple of drinks are on us."

Don't care about fancy or lowbrow. Would love Sample except it's too small, or Local 61 except they don't have hard alcohol. Just somewhere we can mill around and friends can come and go.

Any ideas? If you make the winning suggestion, come by and I'll buy you a drink too.

Summer Restaurant Week 2012

Special occasion dinner on a Saturday night - doesn't have to be super fancy but should be good. Maialino came up on an OT search which, as did One If By Land (never been, only heard about it, but I guess RW Is the time to try it.).

Smith Street lunch?

This is interesting to me. Which one is Court Street Grocers, is that the more upscale looking place down around 2nd Place or so, sort of a Union Market clone? What makes the Club so good?

Catania - Ca-put?

When I went by last evening, things at least looked a little different - stools weren't up on the window-bar anymore and there was a bike inside. Not clear whether it's slow progress to reopening or just clearing out for the next place, but we can be optimistic...

Sign said closed until 5/10 for vacation, but was closed at least a day later than that (and didn't check this weekend). Phone is "temporarily disconnected".

Not good omens. Anyone know if they're back in business, or planning to be?

Koto Sushi Prospect Heights: do yourself a favor and don't overlook this place.

I meant to write just such a post on Friday, until the hours got away from me. So, after getting delivery from there - "yeah, that place is great". Needed a change of pace after one more declining-quality-not-worth-the-good-price meal from Mitoushi, I saw this on Delivery.com and started the order, and since I was 3/4 done before realizing this was the PH Koto and not Henry St, I figured I'd stick with it.

This isn't Ki or Hibino, but it's solid, straightforwardly good sushi at a reasonable price. Assortment of sushi and a couple of rolls were all fresh, average-to-large (but not cartoonish) in size, and tasty. Scallop and yellowtail were particularly nice on that particular night. Also enjoyed the miso eggplant appetizer. I will also call out that they deliver to Cobble Hill, and delivery was prompt and friendly. They're on Seamless and Delivery.com (and I guess grubhub too). This was our first Koto order, won't be our last.

(NB: once again, this is the Prospect Heights Koto at 6th/Flatbush, NOT Carroll Gardens Koto with which I have no experience.)

Saturday Birthday Dinner for teens in Brooklyn

Colonie, as I and many on this board have said a few times, is great. No reservations (and long waits), but good food (large and small plates), good cocktails, and a happening atmosphere. Atlantic Ave between Clinton and Henry.

Large order of wings (with chips and their chipotle sauce) and a Margarita at Lobo*, with dessert from Blue Marble on the next block.

Why oh why did I wait 10+ years to go to Locanda Vini e Olii?

Ate here last week for the first time, after hearing about it on these boards for awhile, and that won't be our last visit.

For those who haven't been, it's an old pharmacy, and positively charming inside. Staff are friendly and welcoming, great wine selection.

We ordered too much food but enjoyed it. My wife had the trio of chopped salmon tartare crostini - one each with with orange, lemon and grapefruit flavors with associated herbs. This was not small, and we enjoyed all three. I couldn't resist the onion soup - strange (to me) for an Italian place, but very very good. We skipped main meat courses in favor of pastas. I had pappardelle with duck ragu, a variation from the website menu's beef/pork, but still extremely good. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the sauce was right in the sweet spot, clearly "ducky" but not too over-the-top.

My wife got the pici, which gets its own paragraph. I had not heard of it before reading about this restaurant, but WOW, was this good. It's like a very thick spaghetti (maybe half-inch in diameter rather than 1/8 inch for regular thick spaghetti?), and it was surrounded by beautiful onions and cheese. By far the blue-ribbon winner of the meal (among serious competition). I was glad my wife was not super hungry that night.

We also got a salad - the figs and gorgonzola, which was great but superfluous, and most of which came home with us. We also shared and enjoyed a dessert.

Two glasses of wine for each of us, all red; the waiter recommended the Pala/Sardegna with our orders, which was a great choice.

Quite simply, we loved everything about this place. I would gladly repeat the exact same meal tomorrow, and would be just as happy to go back and get all different dishes*. It was like making a new friend that after a half hour you forget you haven't known each other for years. Highly recommended.

* Except the pici. I'm getting the pici again.

Top 5 restaurants to try in Brooklyn (or 10)

The places not mentioned so far that I'd add are Colonie and Battersby. In addition, Henry's End, Locanda Vini e Olii (easily vaulted into my top few from just one meal). And maybe Brucie or Frankies, and Flatbush Farm (though my experiences seem to have been better than the norm here).

Brooklyn Fare and Lugers each get their own category, fair or not.

Need Brooklyn Heights Restaurant with Valet Parking for 9 ppl

+1 to the other posters that valet is rare. That said, I'd agree to find the restaurant you want to go to within quick car-trip range of the hotel, and do two trips if need be. Henry's End is a good grown-up place that's great this time of year.

Brooklyn venue for 50-60 person Friday night dinner?

Bubby's in DUMBO was suggested on the other thread, I have no experience with it. Also check out Watty and Meg (http://wattyandmeg.com/private-partie...) - food there is excellent.

Palo Santo, if they will do it, would be a wonderful destination and also has a little (very little - like 2 tables) back garden.
