Catania - Ca-put?

When I went by last evening, things at least looked a little different - stools weren't up on the window-bar anymore and there was a bike inside. Not clear whether it's slow progress to reopening or just clearing out for the next place, but we can be optimistic...

Catania - Ca-put?

Sign said closed until 5/10 for vacation, but was closed at least a day later than that (and didn't check this weekend). Phone is "temporarily disconnected".

Not good omens. Anyone know if they're back in business, or planning to be?

Koto Sushi Prospect Heights: do yourself a favor and don't overlook this place.

Another delivery last night, with similar results. Workmanlike, solid, no complaints. Definitely my new delivery standby.

Koto Sushi Prospect Heights: do yourself a favor and don't overlook this place.

I meant to write just such a post on Friday, until the hours got away from me. So, after getting delivery from there - "yeah, that place is great". Needed a change of pace after one more declining-quality-not-worth-the-good-price meal from Mitoushi, I saw this on Delivery.com and started the order, and since I was 3/4 done before realizing this was the PH Koto and not Henry St, I figured I'd stick with it.

This isn't Ki or Hibino, but it's solid, straightforwardly good sushi at a reasonable price. Assortment of sushi and a couple of rolls were all fresh, average-to-large (but not cartoonish) in size, and tasty. Scallop and yellowtail were particularly nice on that particular night. Also enjoyed the miso eggplant appetizer. I will also call out that they deliver to Cobble Hill, and delivery was prompt and friendly. They're on Seamless and Delivery.com (and I guess grubhub too). This was our first Koto order, won't be our last.

(NB: once again, this is the Prospect Heights Koto at 6th/Flatbush, NOT Carroll Gardens Koto with which I have no experience.)

Craving Steak au poivre in Bklyn, any recs?

Never had it at Henry's End, but it's hard to imagine it'd be anything but terrific.

Saturday Birthday Dinner for teens in Brooklyn

Colonie, as I and many on this board have said a few times, is great. No reservations (and long waits), but good food (large and small plates), good cocktails, and a happening atmosphere. Atlantic Ave between Clinton and Henry.

Large order of wings (with chips and their chipotle sauce) and a Margarita at Lobo*, with dessert from Blue Marble on the next block.

(* I know, Lobo's mexican food isn't that great. But the wings... and the red chipotle sauce they come with... sigh)

Why oh why did I wait 10+ years to go to Locanda Vini e Olii?

Ate here last week for the first time, after hearing about it on these boards for awhile, and that won't be our last visit.

For those who haven't been, it's an old pharmacy, and positively charming inside. Staff are friendly and welcoming, great wine selection.

We ordered too much food but enjoyed it. My wife had the trio of chopped salmon tartare crostini - one each with with orange, lemon and grapefruit flavors with associated herbs. This was not small, and we enjoyed all three. I couldn't resist the onion soup - strange (to me) for an Italian place, but very very good. We skipped main meat courses in favor of pastas. I had pappardelle with duck ragu, a variation from the website menu's beef/pork, but still extremely good. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the sauce was right in the sweet spot, clearly "ducky" but not too over-the-top.

My wife got the pici, which gets its own paragraph. I had not heard of it before reading about this restaurant, but WOW, was this good. It's like a very thick spaghetti (maybe half-inch in diameter rather than 1/8 inch for regular thick spaghetti?), and it was surrounded by beautiful onions and cheese. By far the blue-ribbon winner of the meal (among serious competition). I was glad my wife was not super hungry that night.

We also got a salad - the figs and gorgonzola, which was great but superfluous, and most of which came home with us. We also shared and enjoyed a dessert.

Two glasses of wine for each of us, all red; the waiter recommended the Pala/Sardegna with our orders, which was a great choice.

Quite simply, we loved everything about this place. I would gladly repeat the exact same meal tomorrow, and would be just as happy to go back and get all different dishes*. It was like making a new friend that after a half hour you forget you haven't known each other for years. Highly recommended.

* Except the pici. I'm getting the pici again.

Top 5 restaurants to try in Brooklyn (or 10)

The places not mentioned so far that I'd add are Colonie and Battersby. In addition, Henry's End, Locanda Vini e Olii (easily vaulted into my top few from just one meal). And maybe Brucie or Frankies, and Flatbush Farm (though my experiences seem to have been better than the norm here).

Brooklyn Fare and Lugers each get their own category, fair or not.

matzah ball soup in Brooklyn

Long gone, I believe - at least two or three occupants ago in that space. They can give you a nice Sprint cell phone and wireless plan, though.

Report before I forget - Tofu on 7th Park Slope

Yup - I ordered the three pepper chicken (or something like that, it was recommended on the other thread) and it arrived fast and in good shape. And this was a month or so ago, on grubhub no less which is not known for its speed.

Thanks once again, OB 'hounds!

Need Brooklyn Heights Restaurant with Valet Parking for 9 ppl

+1 to the other posters that valet is rare. That said, I'd agree to find the restaurant you want to go to within quick car-trip range of the hotel, and do two trips if need be. Henry's End is a good grown-up place that's great this time of year.

Brooklyn venue for 50-60 person Friday night dinner?

Bubby's in DUMBO was suggested on the other thread, I have no experience with it. Also check out Watty and Meg (http://wattyandmeg.com/private-parties.html) - food there is excellent.

Palo Santo, if they will do it, would be a wonderful destination and also has a little (very little - like 2 tables) back garden.

Tex, I want to second the Invisible Dog - our kids' school has held its parents event there the last two years and the space is very cool. It may be a bit raw depending on how much/little you want to do with it (and I didn't work on the event so I can't speak about price or how they are to work with) - but having an event there with your own bartender and food is clearly something they do there. Plus, similarly to 61 Local, right on top of the F and easy from any other subway. Worth a look.

Vinegar Hill House Recommendations

Egit, thank you for posting this. My wife and I went there in December, and experienced THE EXACT SAME THING. Tables open, and the hostess plucking pairs from the bar every 3-7 minutes to sit them down, and not being very friendly when I had a follow up question about it. I was pretty steamed, but (on my wife's always-prudent advice) tried to keep it polite. We actually waited for a table to eat, and they were pretty much on time for their prediction, but seriously, what's with the one-at-a-time seating? They obviously do this for a reason, maybe to smooth out the impact of the first seatings on the kitchen, or just Because They Can, but I have no idea why this is.

Any insights from Chow-land? I feel so much better having gotten this off my chest, and either relieved or bemused that this is the norm there.

Lunch near Transit Museum (in Brooklyn)

If you search on this board, you'll find mostly or all positive things to say about Bocca Lupo. Very good, one of our favorites (with kids and without - you didn't mention whether you have kids with you)

egit - what was the verdict?

My one recommendation would have been to sit downstairs if at all possible :)

Lunch near Transit Museum (in Brooklyn)

Well put, egit - I can't remember the last time I went to Bar Tabac and was disappointed, and the food range is likely to please anyone. The mussels and fries... mmm.

Lunch near Transit Museum (in Brooklyn)

I'd go south (towards Cobble Hill and Atlantic Ave) rather than into downtown/Heights.
Your best bets are
(1) Court Street and Smith Street - plenty of places in the first few blocks including Van Horn sandwich shop, Brucie (may be closed Sat), Strong Place (all on Court) and Bar Tabac, Apartment 138, Char #4 (Smith), among tons of others.

(2) Atlantic Avenue - Middle Eastern places include Bedouin Tent (left turn from Boerum) or Tripoli (right turn, corner of Clinton/Atlantic). Pete's Ale House is great American/bar food.

(3) Notwithstanding my above advice, Shake Shack is now at the corner of Fulton and Brooklyn Bridge Blvd and is, y'know, Shake Shack.

You can also do a search for Marriott on this board, anything recommended to people looking for lunch around the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott will apply fo ryou too.

billyeats - your tastes sound like they roughly match mine. I like Court St Bagels better than you do, but I heartily +1 on Nectar's breakfast burrito - I get mine with chorizo and on the rare occasions I indulge I am never sorry.

Also, I'm glad (not exactly glad, but you know) to hear I'm not the only one who thinks Ted + Honey's coffee is pretty eh - but their baked goods and lunch food are pretty good. Their sausage egg and cheese is substantial and tasty but I'd rather have 1 1/2 Nectar wraps. If there was any other coffee to the west of Court St (I live between Court and Clinton), I'd go to T+H a lot less... but if you're going that direction and don't feel like going to two places, what else to do?

Chefs Table Reservation

I may be wrong butI infer that as a calculatedly offhand reference to the concierge service that comes with some of American Express' higher end products such as (I believe) Platinum and Centurion. (I don't have those cards or those services, mind you...)

Staying on-topic - have the prices and examples of wine pairings at BF been posted anywhere, and/or is BYOB still allowed (with or without corkage)? As incomparable as BF is, it is in danger of pricing itself out of the range of this eater (or already has...) - is it still $185 + service?

Great new restaurants in Brooklyn?

Would be helpful to know what sorts of places you liked and/or are looking for, but I'll agree with the above posters, Colonie and Battersby are the best meals I've had in the neighborhood recently. Also, Brucie.

Best coffee in the area, by a healthy margin, is at Cafe Pedlar on Court St at Warren.

Bagels, there is more diverse opinion but I like Court Street Bagels (fka Bagel World) on Court by Boerum.

Those two are within a block of each other, a 10-15 minute walk from the Marriott. The bagel place also has good coffee, my usual everyday type of cup, while Pedlar has Stumptown, excellent espresso drinks, etc.

I will add that if you like Dunkin Donuts coffee, your closest are on Court between Joralemon and Livingston (quite close to the Marriott, perhaps your closest overall option) or at the corner of Smith and Bergen.

Need Ideas for Private Party on a Friday night in Brooklyn

Aha - I knew I heard that suggestion here recently, I guess it was from you :D

I've been looking for a venue for similar purpose (a come-when-you-like birthday gathering over a few hours, where we could have a private space) - I liked the idea of 61 Local a lot (and I live very close - FYI it's in Cobble, not Carroll), except - do they serve wine and liquor or just beer?

Burgers in Brooklyn

Just to update, if anyone finds this thread, we went to Moo Burger a few weeks back, and while I'm willing to give it another chance we weren't enthralled. Wife's burger was extremely underdone - raw when asked for medium rare, asked them to do it again medium and it barely changed. They said "that's how they do it" and I can understand that different places calibrate different levels of rare, but be aware that these guys are a step to 1.5 steps rarer than what you might expect. Or maybe we hit it on an off night. My lamb burger was fine. All the fried stuff was pretty good. And the waitress was pretty heavily trying to upsell sides and other stuff, which I found a bit off-putting. Anyway, I'd try it again but probably wouldn't hurry back.

Daniel76, did you try it? Your opinion carries weight, I'm curious how you found it if so.

Next time, also consider Watty and Meg (upscaler but very good burger) or Two8Two (farther away, Atlantic/Smith, but quite good).

One night in brooklyn?

Yeah, I didn't mean to suggest that your choices are un-hip. All quality places, to be sure.

Henry's End has a pretty extensive menu and it's far from all game. Their andouille sausage with mustard is excellent and my usual appetizer. Also be aware the entrees generally come with a basic salad and a little rice and vegetables, nothing inspiring. The main dish is the main deal here. I don't think you'll be sorry. Damn, I need to get back there.
