Fine Dining in DC

You will not find any restaurant in DC that is even close to EMP, Daniel, Per Se..

I personally did not enjoy Citronelle and City Zen at all.

I second Komi, Marcel's, Blue Duck, and Courduroy.

Takeout that will travel well (NY to DC)

I am looking for takeout suggestion that will travel well to DC. I will have dinner at Sushi Yasuda and heading out via Penn Station. I am willing to travel for good food so any suggestions would be helpful! And yes, I am mindful of other passengers so something with minimal to avg pungency would be great.

Thank you!

Help Me Choose!

I think DC Coast is better than TenPehn but I usually head to DC Coast for business lunch/dinner. I do like Sonoma's wines by the glass list but I didn't think their food was stellar. It's definitely good but nothing too memorable.

Susar Lee's Zentan: Has Anyone Been?

I went couple of more times after my first visit, and I have to agree with ustdiner that I am less and less thrilled with the restaurant. The Spicy Thai martini is still fabulous. I would avoid sashimi since they slice it so think that you end up gnawing on the flesh rather than savoring it. Sushi is still pretty decent. I haven't been happy with too many cooked dishes.

Susar Lee's Zentan: Has Anyone Been?

I dined at Zentan last night. I was pleasantly surprised by Zentan. I went there with low expectations due to my recent disappointment by celebrated chefs opening a post in DC (Alain Ducasse, Eric Ripert, Michael Mina, etc).

The atmosphere is a nondescript. It's black but not stunning. My server, bless her heart, did not speak English well so we experienced some difficulties communicating.

I started out with a Spicy Thai Martini, and it was fabulous. Not too sweet , not too tart but refreshing with enough punch to unwind and relax.

We then ordered various of dishes: spicy lobster sushi, yellowtail, crudo assortment, duck rolls, cod, and asparagus.

The spicy lobster sushi had a good combination of spice, depth from seaweed (don't quote me on this - I may be wrong). The lobster was cooked to perfection. The yellowtail was melt in your mouth fresh, and the restaurant offers you authentic soy sauce (not just the red bottle of soy sauce) and low-sodium.

The crudo featured scallops, yellowtail, seared tuna, and salmon. The seared tuna lacked flavor but was surprisingly not overpowered by the thin slice of jalepeno. It was served with a golf club shaped artichokes, but the artichokes were overcooked. The salmon and the yellowtail was quite nice. Nice touch of citrus just enough to enhance the lovely texture and richness. The scallops were were quite nice as well but was overpowered by the caramalized nuts.

The duck rolls were my least favorite. The skin of the rolls were soggy, and I didn't taste much duck but just the bbq-like sauce.

The cod was quite lovely as well. Simple, Asian preparation where the fish flaked beautifully off with my fork to be savored. The asparagus were perfectly cooked in what appeared to be dashi broth since there was definitely an umami to the perfectly sized stalks.

I truly look forward to a revisit to sample other dishes that Susar Lee has to offer.

Coming to DC and dining at BLT Steakhouse and Sushi Taro

Sushi Taro has been on of the biggest disappointments this year for me. Do a quick search.
This is what I wrote awhile back.

I heard, however, that lunch at Sushi Taro isn't bad. I haven't been so....

Is Oyamel good?

I have been disappointed again and again by Jose Andres' restaurants. Oyamel is decent but not fantastic.

J. Mackey's on L St?

Definitely great for hh and they have a patio if you enjoy drinking outdoors. Food is average, but it's a fun place.

Help for Tonight! Need late-night crab joint not super far from Annandale? (Q-Deck closes too early!)

You may want to try Chung Jin Dong Crab House. It's on 6499 Little River Tpke
Alexandria, VA 22312, formerly Chicken Village. I haven't been myself so I cannot voucher for the food but I know that they are open super late.

Box of peaches

I just got a box of juicy peaches and need some suggestions. I have and will do the following (the usual suspects):
peach smoothie
peach cobbler
peach bellini

Any other suggestions? I am not too keen on making jams... If you have recipes, I would appreciate them too!

Thanks!

Breakfast/Brunch Baltimore

Captain Larry's - spicy bloody mary with fresh horseradish - $3 all day on Sunday
Mama's on the Half Shell - great bloody mary, great mac&cheese
Blue Moon Cafe - probably one of the best casual breakfast/brunch scenes

Spanish food in NOVA or DC - Jaleo??

Taberna del Alabardero (I believe it is 18th & I Street NW) is your best bet. I believe it is the only Spanish restaurant designated by the Spanish govt as a Spanish restaurant. It is authentic and they have a great HH special - half off all tapas and sangria.

Their tortilla espanol is to DIE for! And Manolo, the bartender is awesome!

Zatinya - still good?

Zaytinya used to be one of my favorite places in DC. It no longer is. I can notice a change with every visit. The grilled octopus is usually overcooked, the short ribs are over seasoned, etc...

I think Jose Andres is too focused on his new LA eatery.
