40th Birthday Weekend in Manhattan
Last night we were at WD-50.They do in fact hold back some tables from open table so it was a great suggestion to call. Although we booked at the bar, the restaurant let us sit at the chef's table in the back. Not only were we treated to a meal which delighted the senses, we got to see a wonderful ballet through the looking glass of the pass. The tasting menu was perfectly balanced and executes and the flavours married perfectly with the wine. We were pleasantly surprised by not one but two choices from Ontario. I will be looking to buy a couple of bottles when I get home. My favorite appeizer was the poached egg, ceasar dressing, lily bulb with pumpernickel. The best main was the monkfish, and the mango sake caramel and sheep's milk was the best desert. Thanks for encouraging me to call for a table, it would have been a shame to miss this.

Thanks for the suggestion. We got an 8 o'clock by calling. I'll post a report after dinner.

We're in town for the weekend staying @ the London NYC on 54th between 6th & 7th Ave. we're looking for someplace to walk out and have breakfast other than the usual deli suspects.
40th Birthday Weekend in Manhattan
We're in town march 2 & 3. Only time for WD-50 is 10pm, which we felt was a little late. I look forward to hearing about your dinner there.
40th Birthday Weekend in Manhattan
Thanks for the suggestions. We have it narrowed to Toqueville or The Modern dining room. WD - 50 looked incredible but by the time I could get a reservation it would be Hilary's 50 th
40th Birthday Weekend in Manhattan
I am certainly open to expanding budget. I like the look of both Corton and Toqueville
40th Birthday Weekend in Manhattan
I am taking my wife to New York from Toronto for her 40th Birthday. Last time we were in New York was for our 15th Wedding Anniversary in August 2010. At that time we went to Degustation and Esca. We thought both were incredible. The prices were fine in both places. I am looking to budget $100 per person for the evening, excluding alcohol. If anyone could recommend a place for a nightcap as well, that would be great.
Looking for Christmas Day Dim Sum
We are looking for a place that is open on Christmas day for Dim Sum or anything restaurant that is open in the evening on December 25th.
Pre Theatre Dinner Saturday August 21st
We are Chowhounders in from Toronto for 15th wedding anniversary. As usual, I am planning this last minute. I got a reservation on Friday for Degustation and I thought we might try for a drink at Barrio Chino. I need help with Saturday night though. We have theatre tickets for American Idiot at the St. James on West 44th between 7th and 8th. Any suggestions for pre-theatre and post theatre would be very much appreciated. The hotel got us a table at Bar Americain, but it seems so touristy. Also, any recommendations for a deli in Brooklyn in the Grand and Bushwick Ave area would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Dim Sum in the Broadview and Gerrard St. E.
There appear to be a plethora of dim sum places in the block east of Broadview on Gerrard. Anyone know of definite hits or misses?
Suggestions for Business Lunch Yonge and Eglinton Area
I am looking for a place to take a client in the Yonge and Eglinton area. It does not have to be fancy, but I would prefer a sit down place where noise levels are not too high, preferably within a couple of blocks of the Subway.
Lou Dawgs - King & Portland
Got take out for my office. We got pulled pork, pulled chicken and the brisket. I judge BBQ by the pork and was a bit disappointed. I am used to pulled pork including a little bit of the crust that gets formed when the rub is smoked for 10 - 12 hours. I always look for those little bits of crunchy goodness and my pulled pork didn't have any.
I found the pulled chicken and brisket did have a bit of the crust, so I am sure that it does exist. The chicken was tender and moist. Brisket was tender if a touch dry. I did not find things were over sauced which was good. The buns are fresh, but I find they overpower the meat. I hesitate to be too critical in this respect because they are "Southern Sandwiches," not BBQ Overall I found, as did lister, that the food was a bit bland. (exception being the jalapeno cheddar muffins which I gather they have improved on by upping the Jalapeno quotient.)
My overall verdict is that it is not BBQ, but it is fresh and home made. I will likely return and try the fish which seems to be a big hit. In terms of the whole meat bread combination, at the risk of comparing apples to oranges, I prefer California Sandwiches to this place.
Looking for casual lunch Warden & Hwy 7
You get ++ bonus for Dim Sum. Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, by the time I got your final post we had already been and come back. Ambassador was fine. The only real disappointment was that the clamari was chewy and tough. Now that I have your recommendations, I will be going to both Empire Court and Casa Victoria in the near future. I assume your review of "OK but not great" holds for Golden Court on Beaver Creek as well. Are there any good places in the Time Square plaza next door to Beaver Creek?
Looking for casual lunch Warden & Hwy 7
Thanks for the recommendation. The Spa is actually in the Hilton Suites hotel so Empire Court would have been great, but it is closed Tuesday. I got a recommendation for Ambassador on Beaver Creek. Ever been there?
Looking for casual lunch Warden & Hwy 7
Looking for casual lunch spot. I have a "date" with my wife at the spa in Markham. Looking for a place to grab a bite beforehand. We like the unusual and it doesn't matter what it is (cheap expensive, veg, carnivore) as long as it is good. We don't get to that area at all so any favorites are welcome. Any recommendations involving Dim Sum receive bonus points.
Rodney's By Bay -- Anyone been?
They have been open less than a month and the place seems to have generated quite the buzz already. Went a couple of weeks ago on a Friday for lunch. The place is quite small and fills up fast, so I recommend reservations. Like Rodney's oysters abound. Good selection from both coasts and many sauces available from the shallot vinegar to extraordinarly hot. The menu is small but everything seems delicious. My group had mussels, fish and chips, and the burger with gruyere. The mussels were excellent. I had not had bacon it the broth before, but it added a nice salty smokey contrast to the silkiness of the mussels. My dish was the fish and chips. The coating was nice and crispy served in a newsprint cone. The chips were amazing, hot, fresh cut and golden brown. I did not taste the burger, but it looked great. My friend said it was cooked the way she ordered it. The only complaint was that the foccaccia was fresh and delicious but it was hard to keep the patty from sliding around. Only complaint is that there is no coffee.
Business Lunch Yonge & St. Clair
I'm looking for a place to take some business associates for lunch at Yonge & St. Clair. I'm looking for a place that has decent food and where it is not too loud, so I can talk to them. Budget is about $100 or so. No pub grub please.
Korean Food Yonge St. & Finch
We ended up getting the Bi Bim Bap and we tried a sizzling beef dish which came with some sort of tubular noodles (I wish I had written it down). Both were great. The real treat was the huge number of side dishes you got. My wife loved the glass noodles and the fish cake. I really liked the potato and the green beans. We've had the standard radish dish but these were new and definitely worth the trip. Next time we're gonna try To Dam Gol
Korean Food Yonge St. & Finch
We went to Nakwon and were very pleased with the quality of the food. The service was as advertised, less than doting, but the food more than made up for any lack of attention. The servers did answer our questions as to "what is this delicious side dish?" and even did so in English. I give Nakwon two enthusiastic thumbs up and will be returning.
Korean Food Yonge St. & Finch
We saw Soban. I would be interested on hearing your thoughts about the place.
Korean Food Yonge St. & Finch
My wife is about half way through her preganancy with our third. This time around, she is craving the Korean specialty "dol sot bi bim bop." If anyone reading this does not know what it is (which I seriously doubt) it is rice topped with hot sauce, julienned vegetables, beef and a sunny side up egg served in a heated stone bowl. You mix it all together and the heat of the bowl gives the rice touching it a nice crisp crust. There seem to be a plethora of Korean places on Yonge around Finch. Any suggestions on some good ones? Other useful info would be on how family friendly they are, since the two older siblings often come to dinner with us (when no sitter is available).
Indian in the downtown core
My friend is coming in from Amarillo TX. He used to live in San Franciso and is in dire need of non-chain eating. I am looking for Indian in the downtown core, but am open to other suggestions. Looking for about $100 before tax, tip and alcohol.
Finch and DVP
I am giving a guest lecture at Seneca College at Finch and DVP tonight. Where can I go for 9pm bite. Looking for something sit down, maybe even a tablecloth and a menu that I can hold, not read off the wall. That being said, if there is a must go place where the menu is on the wall, I'll check it out.
Vegan Restaurants
Looking for restaurant in the downtown core (Queen / University) that has a decent vegan side of the menu.
Catering
I am looking for someone to cater a cocktail party for 40 - 50. I would like to serve some pass around finger foods. I have the servers lined up, I am looking for a caterer. My emphasis would be substance over form (those "gaspacho shooters" are really cool looking, but not that easy to eat). Any suggestions in the $10 per person range?
Anniversary Dinner - Open Sunday
Yes I am a typical male. Sunday is my 11th wedding anniversary and I have yet to make a reservation. I have tried Rain and The Corner House. Neither are open on Sundays. Any suggestions?
