Reservation at Alan Wong's

I tried on Open Table and only got lousy choices. When I called the restaurant we got a Saturday at 7:15. They told me they don't release primes times to OT. You can only get these times by calling directly.

Prima

It was made with fish stock, dried squid and pineapple. Had the pineapple flavor without the sweet suggary finish. I had my doubts from the name but LOVED it.

Interesting, not one of the dishes specifically mentioned in your first was still on the menu.

Prima

We went last night. Found the food really good, prices not super high and the pizza wonderful. The pineapple soup was fabulous, the mushroom plate superb, and the pork belly delicious!

A Week in King City

I'm going to be spending a week in King City setting up and then running the Monterey Wine Competition. I'd sure like an update on places worth a visit. Thanks!

Dinner for 16 in King City

Does anyone have any suggestions for a place in King City that has good food and can handle a group of about 16?

Best smoked salmon in SD?

Market has an appetizer on its menu that has the finest smoked salmon I have ever had!

Dim Sum- But in a Honolulu Hotel

We went to an excellent dim sum lunch with a friend of ours who is a restauranteur at one of his favorite places. It's The Royal Garden Restaurant on the 3rd floor of the Ala Moana Hotel (adjacent to the Ala Moana shopping center) Busy (all Asians except us), good stuff esp. the pork buns, the tripe, the fried taro, and the mochi. Well worth a visit.

Fresh Peach Pie @ Bankers Hill

We had another great meal at Bankers Hill tonight. Spurred by posts here I was ready to try the pie. Tonight it was fresh peach pie (the peaches were the Debutant variety obtained at the Farmers Market in Santa Monica) Superb. Flaky flavorful crust-a filling that tasted like eating a peach just off a tree. WOW.

By the way. We were there in the early evening and at in the lower dining room and the doise level was far less than in the hiogher area near the bar.

Bankers Hill Bar and Restaurant

The food is super, the noise level is high. Not the place for quiet detailed conversation. Between the brick floors, the exposed ceilings, the noise from the bar, the music and the planes flying by, it is noisy. But who cares, the food is top notch

Temecula Wine Country

it would be foolish to skip South Coast Winery. Sure it is big, modern and often crowded on weekends. Who cares? It's the wines that count. And theirs are top notch. For TWO years in a row they have been named winery of the year by the California State Fair wine competition. They were the top medal winners at last year's Temecula Wine Competition. They make both sparkling and still wines. If you want to learn by tasting some of the best-visit here. (I have no $$$ ties to this place--I just like their wines)

Market Restaurant update

I can't comment on the on line menu. I commented based on the actual menu we saw last Wednesday night.

Market Restaurant update

I can't comment on the service you got but youi are simply WRONG about the entree prices. We were there 2 nights ago but they are nowhere near the level of your post. $28 to 38? They were in the 20 t0 30 range unless you ordered lobster on top of every dish. Losing its luster? NOT A CHANCE. We still think it is the best place in San Diego county. The lobster cobb salad was amazing. the soups are always wonderful (somehow the broth is amazingly rich)

Market Restaurant -we adore their food and have seen well behaved children there. There are several threads about Market on this board. (chef was nominated for a James Beard award)

Anything New in Des Moines or Ankeny?

San Diego chowhound about to make his bi-annual trip to the Des Moines/Ankeny area. Anything new or interesting in the last 6 months?

Chambar Loves Cilantro! Argh......

Many thanks for the recommendations to Chambar in Vancouver. Superb mussels BUT no one mentioned one key fact-they love to put large amounts of cilantro on top. For those of us who find that spice too intense-it can be a shock. I wish I'd have known as I would have had them hold the cilantro.

Perhaps this will help some other cilantro hating chowhound.

Best Soup I've Ever Had: Market's Onion-Dck Confit

We weren't expecting it to be so awesome so we were drinking a sparkling house wine at that point that we had with the amuse. It went reasonably well. The acid crispness of the juice was a counterpoint to the silky richness of the soup.

Downtown Vancouver on this Sunday

San Diego Chowhound needs help. I need recommendations for downtown Vancouver (near the Renaissance Hotel on Hastings St) for this Sunday night. Realizing it is Canada's Thanksgiving weekend will this mean many places are closed?

Best Soup I've Ever Had: Market's Onion-Dck Confit

I'm a fan of well made soups but too often find the broth lacking in flavor and richness. Finally found my Nirvana: the French Onion and Duck Confit soup at Market Restaurant and Bar in Del Mar. The broth is incredibly rich, textured with multi levels of flavor. It alone would make my top ten list. But with the addition of small strips of duck confit it takes on an even more velvety rich mouth feel. Outstanding...utterly outstanding. (you don't have to spend big buck to try it--you can go in and order a bowl at the bar) Don't miss this dish. But, for that matter don't miss anything on the menu. (I have no $$ interest in Market-wish i did-I'm just a fan)

McPhee's Grill in Templeton

Many thanks to all of you who posted on this fabulous place. We dined there earlier this week and it was excellent. They start you off with a plate of marinated veggies and a basket containing several different kinds of breads. We had the grilled artichokes (superb) and the duck quesadillas. Everything tasted so fresh and zesty!

My main course, the smoked and then grilled double cut pork chop, was one of the best I have ever had. We were too full for any dessert. Nice wine list of mid-California wines. If in the area, this place is worth a special trip.

They tell us they are opening a new place in Avila Beach where Mulligans used to be.

Josh, get real. You can dine at Market for under $50 a person if you order carefully. Give up a few trips to Starbucks. It's worth it.

What to do in Des Moines

For a real IOWA experience I like the Iowa Machine Shed. I get to Des Moines twice a year and always go there, (the other place I always go is Sage.)

For Iowa fed beef at a reasonable price I always go to the Iowa Beef Steakhouse very campy but good beef.
