One night in Seattle - recommendations?
Thanks guys - those were really helpful suggestions!
For lunch we went to the Market Grill at Pike Place (across from Uli's sausages). I had the halibut platter with bread and salad, and my partner had the halibut sandwich, and we split the chowder. Everything was delicious and perfectly cooked - my only complaint was that the fish was a bit on the salty side. For dinner we went to the Tin Table, which was just the kind of place we were looking for. We split the brussels sprouts with pancetta and brown butter sauce (wow), and then I had the trout with kale, butternut squash, clams, and chorizo, and he had the ribs. Like at Market Grill the fish seemed a bit salty - so maybe it's just me? It was delicious though, and the staff and atmosphere were great. It's too bad we weren't able to stay in town longer - thanks so much for all the recommendations....will have to check them out on another trip!
One night in Seattle - recommendations?
Wonderful, thanks so much! Black Bottle and Tin Table look like the two leading contenders - I've also heard good things about Paseo (for lunch) and Cafe Flora, although it looks a bit out of the way.
One night in Seattle - recommendations?
Hi there,
My partner and I are coming down to Seattle from Vancouver for one night and will be staying in the Pike Place market area. We are looking for a reasonably-priced (~$15/person before drinks) dinner spot that is not a sushi or Thai joint (there are plenty in Vancouver), walking distance (max 30-45 mins walk) from the market. What's close, delicious, and reasonably-priced? I don't ask much, I know....
Thanks!
Weekday brunch near union station (Toronto)
I'm spending a few hours in transit in Toronto and I am looking for recommendations for a place not too far from the Union Station/St. Lawrence market area to have a working brunch. This is a casual brunch for two people, so the big hotels are not what I'm looking for...more like a small place with good food and quiet enough to have a conversation. And it will be on a weekday, so places offering weekend brunches only are out. Any suggestions?
Atithi in Vancouver
I was there this week and tried the special: lamb with pomegranate sauce and cumin potatoes. My friend is vegan and was delighted to find a good selection of items she could choose from. Both of our dishes were delicious - my only complaint would be that we didn't get quite enough rice, but it was easy to order more and it came quickly. I will definitely be going back!
Moules Frites Vancouver
Thanks guys! We ended up going to Stella's (tried Salad de Fruits, but they're closed Mondays). The service was great, the moules were great, but the fries were a bit on the salty side. Maybe they were trying to get us to buy more beer? Thanks for the suggestions, and I'll definitely check back here the next time the moules craving hits.
Moules Frites Vancouver
Any good suggestions for moules frites (mussels and fries) in Vancouver? Is Stella's on Cambie any good?
How's my plan re: restaurants in Vancouver and Victoria
The line at Vij's isn't bad if you're willing to show up right when they open (5:30). You can go right in in the first seating.
Dining Alone in Vancouver
Toshi Sushi (on 16th just off Main) always has a HUGE lineup. Beat the line by going alone and telling them you're happy to sit at the bar! Best sushi in town (if you ask me) - yum yum.
How's my plan re: restaurants in Vancouver and Victoria
If you have somewhere to cook them, you can buy the spot prawns raw on Granville island (lots of retailers - I like 'finest at sea' .) I've heard some eat them raw straight from the boats, so you might not even need cooking facilities! If you're looking for a restaurant that serves them, Vij's is a sure bet, and until the end of June, "C" has a spot prawn tasting menu - see http://www.cityfood.com/EN/greater_details/six-course_spot_prawn_menu_at_c/. For something a bit less expensive, I would bet that "fish" on Yew st. between York and First has some, but I can't find a menu online. Have fun!
Vancouver: Canning supplies
Thanks everyone! I managed to find a good selection (including the 'no sugar needed' pectin) at the IGA on Broadway and Arbutus.
Vancouver: Canning supplies
Hello,
Does anyone know where I can get canning supplies in Vancouver? I have some Bernadin jars but need new snap lids, and am also looking for 'no sugar needed' pectin. Thanks!
Mexican cheese ice cream mystery..
Great, thanks! I'll let you know how it works out, but I probably won't do it right away..
Mexican cheese ice cream mystery..
I was in Mexico last year and had delicious "helado de queso" in Guanajuato. I live in Canada and own an ice cream maker, and wanted to replicate it. There's a goat cheese ice cream recipe in David Lebowitz's "The Perfect Scoop" that I plan to follow.
The question is: what kind of cheese was it?? There are lots of great cheese shops here in Vancouver to go to, but I have no idea what kind of cheese it was.
Has anyone heard of this kind of ice cream? Do you know what kind of cheese it was?
Thanks!!
Vancouver: Where to buy condensed milk in a tube?
Thanks! I'll keep my eyes out for the brands they mention.
I've also just found an online reference to Dong Thanh Supermarket (1172 Kingsway, Vancouver) - fingers crossed!
Budget-Friendly Chowing in Vancouver
My fave budget place in Vancouver is Nuba: http://www.nuba.ca/. Right downtown, cheap, and delicious Lebanese food, but not the typical stuff you might find elsewhere. And I'm with the others on Toshi Sushi, but be prepared to line up.
where to buy smoked salmon - van.?
Lots of places on Granville island sell it - I'd bet at least one of them will package it for you.
Vancouver: Where to buy condensed milk in a tube?
Does anyone know where to buy condensed milk in a tube? Since I only use about a teaspoon a week (in my Sunday morning Vietnamese coffee... mmm), the cans are a pain. I hear that it does exist in a tube - like a toothpaste tube. Has anyone heard of this? Where can I get it in Vancouver?
Thanks!
