Lobster Rolls- The Dealbreaker When the Cooked Lobster is Outsourced?

For even more local in Wiscasset, a friend's boyfriend is a lobsterman in Westport Island and informed us to eat on the docks opposite where the lobsters were local, rather than Red's where they were not.

Lobster Food Truck in Cambridge

I talked to the owner last week (I'd just eaten at Clover, so didn't try it) and he said he wasn't sure what days they'd be there yet but it sounded like it would be mostly evenings, including past midnight potentially if they could keep busy.

Pumpkin Gnocci?

I saw this today at Sessas market in Davis Square, Somerville.

Review: Abigail's in Kendall Square

Ate here tonight - two of us split some small plates and a salad. We had the gouda fries, the fried oysters, the mussels in pernod, the marrow, and the panzanella. It was all delicious, but the marrow made me feel stupid for ordering it, there was so little in it. I was impressed that this selection of items wasn't as overly rich as it might have been, but it was a bit saltier than necessary. (This is a common complaint of mine; I may be extra sensitive to salt.) The service was excellent. The room was a little chilly -- the food was comforting, but I might wish for a little more warmth in colors and temperature inside to offset concrete Kendall.

Beet Greens?

Right, I'm looking for a whole bag full of tender beet greens, not a few on my beets.

Beet Greens?

I love beet greens, especially the baby ones. Can I buy them anywhere yet? I'm in Cambridge. (I tried Wilson Farms when I was in that area this week but they didn't have any yet.)

barritt's ginger beer

I bought it at Capones today

Large sprinkle cookies and the like

Yup, that's the one! Yay!

Large sprinkle cookies and the like

(in Cambridge, that is)

Large sprinkle cookies and the like

There is an Italian bakery on Cambridge Street near Cardinal Medeiros that I am spacing the name of that has a whole case of those hard sprinkled cookies. (I often let my toddler pick one out when we go to the library or the pool over there.)

Restaurants that are fun for kids

Depends on the kids and what they like to eat and their behavioral quirks (and experience in restaurants). Some kids those ages are just like any adult you'd dine with and some only eat very particular things and can't sit still.
Dim Sum or shabu shabu could be fun and are interactive. Is Scups open at this time of year? Taking a water taxi to there from downtown would be fun, the art memorable and the breakfast would be fantastic. Walking through Quincy Market is festive for kids typically, if there is anywhere there (Wagamama?) they'd enjoy. Is that Belgian street food place open downtown? Walking around festive holiday streets with fries sound nice. If you go skating on the Frog Pond you're near Chinatown and UBurger now I think.
Mainly, if you're tiring them with new experiences and stimuli, feed them early and often. ;)

U Pick Strawberry Recommendation?

Thanks. We went to Verrill today and they were the little sweet berries (my grandmother would have called them "jam berries"). It was quite busy even early.

Has anyone tried Technique at Le Cordon Bleu?

I went last winter for lunch one day and found the service lacking, the person who sat me (who seemed senior, like a teacher or manager) acted inconvenienced. The waiters and waitresses (I think all chefs-in-training doing rotation as servers?) seemed half-hearted and were all standing around close to me yacking loudly about their personal lives in a formal looking setting. My food was so unremarkable I don't remember what I ate. I was sad about it.

Nigari for making tofu. Trying to find in Boston area.

I think I ordered mine online.

Recc for fish dish in Gloucester/Cape Ann?

I've heard great things about the sushi at Latitude too. When I lived up there I often bought my fish at Steve Connolly on Main St. I think it closed early or had limited hours somehow.

U Pick Strawberry Recommendation?

Anyone know any good organic ones?

Rafiki Bistro?

I keep getting excited when I see the name of this place thinking it is East African (rafiki means friend in Swahili), and then forgetting about it after I realize it isn't. Thanks for the reminder to check it out!

Lord Hobo

It sounds delish but higher priced than I was expecting. Could I bring a well-behaved toddler there early in the evening, like I can at say, Highland Kitchen?

Chia Seeds in Boston (or Cambridge)

maybe call Cambridge Naturals?

The Friendly Toast!

I live in the neighborhood and have been there numerous times for breakfast around 8:30am both on weekdays and weekends with no problems at all. I'd really rather pay slightly less and have slightly less food, but it's fun and I like the creative atmosphere. The pumpkin pancakes are particularly good. I wish the coffee was better. I have a toddler who loves to look at all the things on the walls and who has been treated really well there, though sometimes better than others. I attempted to meet with my book club one weekday evening and they seated 7 of us no problem at 7pm but it was really pretty loud for that. I've had really sweet waitresses there.

The Reagle Beagle!

and a packa mallboros, hahd pack.

rock salt?

Where do I buy rock salt (to make ice cream) -- I'm in Cambridge. And does it go by any other name?

Clambakes on Spectacle Island

That's expensive to me. Take the ferry and bring your own lobstah for lunch. Less money and fewer drunks.

Restaurants everyone seems to love but you don't

I do business in the Jewelers Building frequently and have given Chacarero a number of tries, and well, I think I actively dislike it. The rolls taste like cardboard to me.

best lobster roll

I tried a Neptune's the other day. I had a lovely time sitting there for an early lunch, and it was good lobster. The brioche roll wasn't too disconcerting since it seemed like the only way to eat it effectively was with a fork anyway. I think it could have used a tad more claw meat to sweeten it a little. The fries I ate had absolutely nothing to recommend them, and the lemonade I drank was terrible. So it was really good lobster, and a lot of it, a very pleasant, quiet misty day for the meal, and I didn't think it should cost $25. I think I like Red's in ME best, though I couldn't have snuck there for lunch. :)

Fiddlehead fever

Just noticed Zing! the pizza place in Porter Sq has a fiddlehead pizza right now. (Haven't tried it.)

Fiddlehead fever

If they're coming from Maine now it might be too late here? The shores of the Ipswich River seem like the kind of place.

Bostonians Visiting Asheville w/Toddler...?

Hi,

Thanks for all your help! I missed a couple of these great suggestions before leaving but acted on some of the ones I did read in time! We had a great week there, rented a place up off of Town Mt. Rd. We (including 2 yr old) Really loved Early Girl and ate there twice. We had some good BBQ at the Fiddlin' Pig and my daughter danced up a storm. We got groceries at GreenLife and the Farmer's Market (okay, I admit I did not know until I cooked it that Side Meat is Not the same thing as bacon, lol). We had some very good "Frog Jam" from the market and also tried boiled peanuts (which we though tasted like black-eyed peas but sure don't look very appealing). We thought Salsa's was really delicious, too. We tried Tupelo Honey for bfast on the way out which was also good. Green Sage was so-so, but had a nice atmosphere, the Laughing Seed was much better. The truffles at Chocolate Fetish were Amazing. A burrito at Mamacitos one night was convenient but average. My husband had some seafood bratwurst at the Lobster Trap that was really good. I though the trout there was dry, though.
i love the area, and would love to come back and try more of your recommendations!

Spring 2009 Openings and Closings

Lola and Joe ran Cafe Rossini so it's probably just a name change.

sushi grade fish in Boston?

The guy at New Deal once told me what it had to mean (number of days from water to your mouth) to be "sushi quality" but I forget it exactly -- ask him (Carl, is it?) if you're in there.
