Great Tacos at Englishtown flea market!

There used to be (and this goes back years) a vendor in one of the buildings who had lo mein and beef skewers. It was inexpensive and very fresh.

I just looked and I think it is the Asian Hut -- according to the Englishtown website they are located at BL 59 & 60.

The Cookbook of the Month for June 2012 will be: The Homesick Texan Cookbook, by Lisa Fain

I actually have this cookbook. I haven't made anything from it yet, but this might just get me to crack it opened.

Foods you dislike buying—but sometimes need to

I done that when I didn't have buttermilk in the house -- which is most of the time. It does work.

Cuban Pete's, Montclair

I went there quite some time ago with some friends and had a good meal. I am turned off by the personality of some of the people involved with the restaurant - another good friend of mine (who dined there fairly frequently) had a bad experience when she scheduled a party there and the restaurant cancelled it on her with very little notice.

I also don't like the fact that they sell "sangria" without wine with her.

Point me in the right direction please -- Edison NJ

Thanks for the information. What about good Chinese or Indian restaurants I can get take out from?

Frozen Burritos-Do You Eat Them?

They are pretty good for seriously cheap burritos. I think they cost under $.25 each.

Point me in the right direction please -- Edison NJ

I will be in Edison NJ on Sunday. I will be busy all day and I am looking for something for dinner. I want to pick it up and take it home with me -- probably a 30 minute drive. Please point me to the best ethnic food in Edison.

Thank you!

Frozen Burritos-Do You Eat Them?

I will probably have to hand in my Chowhound membership card, but I have to admit I have some Aldi's burritos in my freezer. One of my kids likes them and I will eat them upon occasion.

And food trucks near the Convention Center?

I will be there for a convention in a few days and will be stuck during lunch hours. Is there anything close by where I could grab a quick bite?

Thanks!

How did I do with my dinner plans? (and a couple other questions.)

I am heading to Seattle the end of next week -- yippee! I will be there for 4 nights, staying downtown -- right near the Washington Convention Center and I won't have a car. I will be in town on business and I have a per diem of $60 a day (mostly spent on dinner.) I have made reservation at the following places:

Etta’s Seafood
Staple and Fancy
Spinasse
Book Bindery

My original list of choices also contained the following:
Hitchcock
The Coterie room
Blind pig
Joule
Mistral Kitchen
Local360 -- fried chicken
Walrus and the carpenter
Spur
Artusi
Elemental
Pasta freska
altura

What do you think of my choices?

Also, I won't have a ton of free time - a few hours on Friday, a few hours on Saturday (more than Friday), some time on Monday and a little time on Tuesday before I head to the airport. I know I want to go the Pike Market. I'm trying to figure it out -- I gather that there are places within the market and then in the surrounding neighbor. Is it easy to find your way around? I know there are threads on the market but if you have any "must do" places please let me know.

Also, are there any good bakeries near the convention center?

Thanks for all your help! I can't wait to visit Seattle.

Yummy foods while undergoing chemo

When I was going through chemo my doctor told me to eat anything I wanted -- he said luckily mine wasn't super strong so raw stuff was okay. I did stay away from sushi though.

I just appreciated having other people cook for me. Soups are great -- matzoh ball was nice and soft with chicken and noodles in the broth.

I have to say that I lost no weight at all during chemo or radiation.

I hope your sister does well and feels good.

Slightly shocking Kraft dinner variation

Kraft Mac and Cheese with a can of Cream Of Mushroom soup and a can of tuna added. You could add a can of peas if you had them. This was something a roommate introduced me to in college. It was filling and relatively cheap.

Can't make a decision -- but my list keeps getting longer

That's what I think I'm going to do. I reach a point where I'm just overanalyzing anyway.

Can't make a decision -- but my list keeps getting longer

You are correct -- except the list is longer now. I was having difficulty making decisions and thought I could get some more opinions here.

Can't make a decision -- but my list keeps getting longer

My back story: Coming into town on business. Staying downtown by the convention center and I won't have a car. My perdiem is $60 a day which I devote mostly to dinner. I have 5 nights for dinner. One day - when I will be free of work I'm thinking I will go to the Original Farmer's Market and then to Animal or Son of a Gun for dinner.

That explained -- I am so torn between being good and going to places that are downtown-ish and saying but these places appeal to me and going just where a feel.

Here is my lengthy list:
Spice table
Picca
Rivera – for special menu - I've been there before
Mozza – been there before
Church and State – not too crazy far away
Son of a Gun
Animal - been there before
Baco Mercat (closed Sunday)
Mezze
Aburiya Toranoko
Comme ca
Angelini osteria
Night + Market
Foundry on Melrose

How many pounds of pasta to feed 60-70?

People thought I was crazy for cooking 12 pounds. They couldn't imagine cooking that much.

How many pounds of pasta to feed 60-70?

I made 12 pounds of pasta and 7 nice sized jars of sauce (served on the side). Plus we had meatballs, salad, bread, two kinds of chicken wings, and 1 pan of a ground turkey, elbow macaroni casserole. For dessert we had apple slices, a sheet cake from Costco and homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Pretty much all the food went, but I don't think anyone went hungry. The kids got 2nds (and some came up for 3rds) if they wanted.

How many pounds of pasta to feed 60-70?

I'm making pasta to feed a bunch of high school kids after a rehearsal. There will also be meatballs, chicken wings, salad and bread.

Animal or Son of a Gun?

Have you been to Animal? I'm just wondering if you preferred it?

Foulest flavours...

I hate the smell or raw pumpkin. I just can't handle it.

Animal or Son of a Gun?

Which one is better? If you had to choose one for dinner which would it be and why?\

I've dined at Animal before and enjoyed it so I thought I would try Son of a Gun this time around, but I'm not totally convinced.

LA why do you vex me so?

Wish I could rent a car, but my company won't go for it and I can't afford it on my own dime -- especially when you add the cost of parking at a hotel.

LA why do you vex me so?

Lots of great food choices in a sprawling city that is a driving city - and I won't have a car. (Ok, that's not the city's fault.) The subway seems limited. Buses -- I will have to see if I can figure them out.

I've been reading this board and putting together a list of dining possibilities. I am staying near the convention center -- on my company's dime and on a limited per diem of $60 a day.

Here are my interests so far:
Spice table
Foundry on Melrose (have to take 2 buses)
Picca – might be too far though
Rivera – for special menu
Mozza
Church and State – not too crazy far away
Son of a Gun - I might go to the Original Farmer's Market and the Grove one day and I don't think this is far away from there.
Baco Mercat
Mezze
Aburiya Toranoko - although they don't put prices on their website and that always concerns me.

I have 5 dinners to plan. My 1 lunch will probably be the Farmer's Market day and my other lunches will be at the convention center.

What are your thoughts? Thanks for the help!

Cdub -- I think I went to el Parian last year and got lunch to go since it wasn't far from the convention center. The food was great. I had had dinner at Gorbals and one of the chefs there told me about it. I think his mother owns it. I walk over made me a little nervous -- I'm not sure I would want to do it at night.

First time in Seattle -- help requested

I will definitely hit Pike Market! It was my first thought when I found out I was going to Seattle. I checked out Altura's menu -- it looks great.

I think I want to do some seafood when I am in Seattle also.

First time in Seattle -- help requested

I'm a pretty adventurous eater and I'm from an area with lots of different ethnic food. I'm looking for good food. What's Seattle known for? I'm sorry I'm so vague.

First time in Seattle -- help requested

Hi all!

I am heading to Seattle on business the end of April. It will be my first time there -- yippee! I will be staying near the downtown Washington Convention Center and I won't have a car. I am looking for ideas for dinners -- but I am on a per diem of around $60 per day. That will go largely towards dinner.

Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

Thanks!

My first trip I was shocked at the cab fare round trip to Bazaar. Last year I was supposed to dine at Animal with a coworker -- who has a car, but the coworker had a last minute meeting. I really wanted to go there so I bit the bullet and spent the cab fare. I don't remember how bad Mozza's transportation was.

Recommendations please

Wienermobile,
Thanks for the information. I will keep an eye out for opening information about UMAMIcatessen. Woodspoon and Baco Mercat sound good. I've thought about Water Grill in the past but I think it is too pricey for my per diem.

If you think of anything else I would love to hear the ideas. Thanks again!

Lithos, Livingston

Glad to be of service.
