10 Best Southern Hotdogs?
Jesse Nuckles Hot Dogs in Greensboro, NC!
Jesse was my father and operated a barbecue restaurant from 1930 to 1995. He was noted for his BBQ, Hot Dogs and Chicken/Gravy sandwiches.
His slaw was vinegar based, actually just vinegar/mildly diluted with water and a salt. It complemented the hot dogs and BBQ.
He had a long-time customer that would order a hot dog all the way (mustard, slaw and onions) and instead of his awesome chili....(secret) the customer always requested a spoon of chicken gravy. We called this hot dog after the customer...A Hawkes Dog. Every friday night, he would call in an exorbitantly large order of these "Hawkes Dogs" for his workers....at a local plant. The "Hawkes Dog" caught on....to some, others still preferred the Nuckles-Style chili....
Some of Nuckles' famous customers have been Billy "Crash" Craddock, George Lindsey, and Elvis Presley who frequented Jesse's in the late 50s.
