I have made this recipe for special events at least a dozen times since I first came across this recipe more than two years ago. Everyone who has it really likes it.
I have made it in several different ways. I've made it with Crisco and Earth Balance Soy Garden, with Crisco alone, and with Soy Garden alone, and most recently, with Spectrum Organic Non-hydrogenated Vegetable (Palm) Shortening and Soy Garden and then with solely the Spectrum shortening. My niece and I made it with only the Spectrum shortening this afternoon and it ttastes great. It wasn't smooth, creamy and fluffy this time (not sure how creamy and fluffy are mutually exclusive?) but usually does when I'm able to use a mixer. Unfortunately, I no longer have a mixer.
I use Rice or Almond Dream with it. I've even made it with water for the liquid and it has turned out great.
This recipe has become a staple at our house. :)
