Impromptu trip to San Juan, PR- where to eat cheap but well?

Thanks! I've heard of Bebo's, so with your recommendation I think we'll put it on the list. La Casita Blanca looks excellent- just the sort of place I was looking for. Really looking forward to that one!

We'll have the public transit well mapped out before the trip. That's not an issue, but thanks for the suggestion.
Any "high dining sector" recommendations?
El Yunque is the part I'm looking forward to the most. I hear great things about the roadside stands & what they have to offer.

Hi all,

My wife surprised me with tickets to Puerto Rico for my fortieth birthday in a couple weeks. We don't have much cash for it (she got an insanely good deal on the tix) but our needs are simple. We'll be staying at a hostel in San Juan with an kitchen we can use, so I figure we can eat out for lunch & have something light at the hostel for dinner. I really know very little about PR besides what I've seen on "No Reservations" & from talking to a few friends of Puerto Rican descent. We don't plan on renting a car but are not averse to walking & are good with public transit in strange places. We'll arrive on Monday, May 06 & depart on Friday, May 10. What do you fine folks recommend for good local food that isn't touristy crap & wont break the bank?

Decent food near Concord Mills?

We ended up grabbing sandwiches from Firehouse. They were happy with them. They had a blast at Concord Mills. It's very colorful & loud, which satisfied their curiosity. Thanks, everybody!

Decent food near Concord Mills?

Thanks, everybody. CM (and malls in general) is pretty much hell on earth for me, so I don't know much about the area. Part of the reason the various in-laws get taken there is because of the ludicrous American spectacle of it all. I figured my initial impression would be correct but thought there may be something I didn't notice. We live in Charlotte, so Davidson is the opposite direction. I'll argue for it but I am not hopeful. Thanks, everybody!

Decent food near Concord Mills?

My wife has some relatives coming to town from France this weekend. Two couples & three kids. Saturday they are all heading to Concord Mills. My wife wants to grab lunch in the area. I don't know of anything in the area other than TGI Mc Bennibee's places. Does anybody know of someplace not terrible around there? They are from northeast France & know food. They aren't accustomed to Asian or Mexican food or anything spicy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Durhamite going to Charlotte--good place for Guglhupf or Vin-Rouge-style bakery breakfast/brunch?

Nova Bakery is excellent, as well.

mexican food in charlotte?

Yeah, it sucks & is to much of a pita to travel simply for lunch. I work by there, so it's easy for me. Next time you find yourself in that part of town, though, stop in.

Looking for Offal in Charlotte

There's a Polish grocery in Pineville I've been meaning to hit up. I've been wanting some sweetbreads lately, as well as some good kidneys.

mexican food in charlotte?

My favorite is a take-out only spot on South Blvd called El Paraiso. They are in the same strip as Manifest but at the opposite end. It's primarily a taqueria type place but they are excellent. It takes a lot of self control not to eat there for lunch every day.
Address is 6105 South Blvd

"real" chinese food??

I saw the sign at what was formerly La Unica. I assume KC's involved?
Fortunately there are tons of good taquerias in town. My wife isn't too keen on Mexican food & I work near a lot of good Mexican food, so I don't look for much near the house.
If you miss good banh mi, go to Le's in the Asian Corners mall at the intersection of N Tryon & Sugar Creek. They're cash only but the banh mi are the best I've had in town.

"real" chinese food??

Seriously, pick up a take out menu from Dim Sum on your way home today. They have dishes that feature most of what huiray mentioned.

"real" chinese food??

I've only eaten there once but it was exactly what I expected- good ideas indifferently prepared. KC can make a great menu & any dishes that are made in advance by the prep crew tend to kick ass. Unfortunately, having a competent/sober enough line cook is a long shot. It's the same issue I had with Fat City but Fat City was ok because it's harder to screw up a sandwich than a tuna steak.

"real" chinese food??

I've been to France a couple of times. They have been some of the nicest, most accommodating people I've met in my life.
If you're a neighbor & had pink hair in the late '80's I'm sure we know each other.

"real" chinese food??

I live just down the street, too. I may have seen you there. It's my daughter's favorite restaurant. She's a dumpling fanatic & the dim sum blew her mind the first time she went.

"real" chinese food??

I too live in Charlotte. Go to Dim Sum on Central. They have a regular menu & on the back is their "Authentic Chinese Menu." Explore it without fear. There's a lot of good stuff on it & the staff is very helpful. If you go on Saturday or Sunday you can enjoy their dim sum as well.

Paris in two weeks with my Italian chef husband

Excellent article! I just forwarded it to my family so they'll know what to expect from the bistros we hit next month.

Best food in Savannah????

If you are going to be in town on a weekday, get in line for lunch at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House. Some of the best southern cooking available anywhere.

Finally taking my 5 year old daughter to Paris for a couple of days - advice?

Thanks for the advice. I figure a total of 15 little items in addition to some bread ought to do us for a light picnic dinner. I figured one bigger item, such as some cheese plus two pieces of different fruits will be feasible for ten euros. My daughter will be with at least one grownup, so between the two of them they'll figure something out. I'm trying to teach her more about money, so determining how much to get for a certain monetary amount will be a good lesson.

Finally taking my 5 year old daughter to Paris for a couple of days - advice?

She's a huge crepe fan & has mentioned several times how much she's looking forward to getting them on the street. We make sweet & savory at home semi-regularly, both as a way to use up leftovers as well as something to soothe my homesick wife. The cheese shops are going to blow her mind! On the day we visit the Eiffel Tower I plan on picnicking in the park before hand. There will be five of us- myself, wife, daughter, my mom & step-dad. I'm going to give everybody 10 euros at the marche rue cler & direct each person to get three items for our picnic. Something tells me there will be a lot of cheese & saucisson in my daughter's bag.

Finally taking my 5 year old daughter to Paris for a couple of days - advice?

Thanks for the info here! I'm taking my eight-year old daughter to France in April for just over two weeks. Five days will be spent in Paris, five days in Lorraine with my wife's family & five days in Normandy & Brittany.

I think she's more excited about the patisseries & chocolatiers than the restaurants but she's a good eater, so I expect her mind to be blown. She's warming to the idea of stinky cheese (she loves all cheese) & is a huge charcuterie fan. Cafe Constant will be on the itinerary for sure.
