So where's the best Porchetta in Rome anyway?

Er Buchetto is FANTASTIC for many reasons beyond the porchetta. It is definitely worth a visit. The problem with Er Buchetto as with many vendors throughout Rome is that the porchetta is actually not made on site or by the vendor at all but, rather bought from commercial producers in Ariccia, a "suburb" of Rome. This is due to the elaborate nature of the process. While passable, there are much finer expressions available - some already mentioned here.

Er Buchetto is a wonderful 100 year-old, family run shop that has not changed much over the century of its existence - have a sandwich and a glass of wine, it'll be the best €5 you spend in Rome!

Am I crazy for thinking that Magnolia cupcakes suck?

c'mon, "good cupcake"? even at it's absolute best, is an oxymoron. the form is full of pre-adolescent anticipation; the bright colors, the festive atmosphere the ensuing chaos... the sugar buzz as an adult is never quite as satisfying as when you're four. if you must eat cupcakes my money is on Cupcake Cafe, the "bohemian" - walnut cake with maple buttercreme. Magnolia has plenty of great things - the cupcakes are the least interesting!

note: i hope the thought police don't remove this criticism of this hallowed form, again.

Okay to freeze pesto?

freeze it in a ice cube tray. when it's froze, transfer to a plastic bag. individual doses! best to do at the end of the summer when the basil is local and fresh.
