Fresh seafood restaurant between Port Charlotte and Sarasota

Try Casey Key Fish House, just off 41. It is reliably decent and sometimes very good. Also, lovely setting right on a mangrove estuary. Old Florida style. Very popular.

St. Pete, Gulfport Peking Duck

You can try it at ABC Seafood on 54 Avenue North. Very good. It is also possible to buy decent peking duck on Saturday (and maybe Sunday) at Lim's Produce on 16th Street and 30 Avenue NO. I have not eaten that one but a friend has and said it was terrific. Also $20 for a whole duck.

trader joes in SWFL

Just a fair warning, Trader Joe is addictive. Once you go, you're going to return--not competitive with Publix but a special place on its own. You will really enjoy shopping there. Not sure if they will allow wine to be sold, but they have a terrific wine selection. You can skip Trader Joe for the produce part but concentrate elsewhere. Their prices are super low on items that cost a good deal more elsewhere.

GULFPORT/ST PETERSBURG

Hi love food. If you haven't been to Gulfport, you are in for a funky treat. I live there half the year and love it. I live in NYC the other half and consider myself a chowhound. There are fun restaurants in Gulfport but we often leave for meals as we love to eat more ethnic than can be found there. We have been sorely disappointed in Pia's and Pegs, though both are nice and successful local places. I hear great things about Tangelo but we haven't been there either. So, the nicest place we have found this year is Cafe Alesia on Central at 72 Street or so. It is owned by French Vietnamese people who really have created a lovely environment with very good food. We drive up to Ben Tanh on 62 Avenue North for excellent Vietnamese, better than we can get in NYC. On the way to Ben Tanh is a very extended Asian market, which we use for purchasing produce and asian goods.

Mazzaro's is a very fun Italian market and you can pick up some really reliably decent Italian food there, great cheeses and olives, things like that. After Eataly, it's just ok. But for St pete it is great.

We buy our organic produce at the St Pete Farmer's Market and try to never miss it on Saturdays. Worden Farms has some of the best organic produce we have ever had and there are now several other farms there. It has changed from just a fun market to a place for serious produce addicts. Otherwise, we do buy produce at Stan's Produce on Central at 57 Street or Publix. Health food we buy at Whole Foods in Sarasota or Tampa, though there is decent local place, we find it expensive and not enough variety for our taste.

We have not eaten at Ted's, sorry. we hear great things but we just haven't gone there--and we don't care for smoked mullet, which we did have from there.

We buy great fish and crab and lobster at Savon Seafood on 49th Street, really good stuff and very good fish meals at Mid Peninsula Market, a down home unpretentious place with an emphasis on fresh and inexpensive fish.

Our Gulfport friends love O'Maddy's. If you want a drink with the locals, go there and you get your view and a nice, friendly ambiance. The food is reliably good, I hear.

We make great breakfasts at home so we don't go out for it, but that Cafe Alesia has breakfast, too, and I bet it is good.

Enjoy your visit.

Tampa Bay Area: In search of a good Knife Sharpening Service

There is an excellent sharpener at the St Pete Downtown Farmer's Market on Saturdays during the winter season. The market is going on this summer in Williams Park, but I am not sure if the sharpener is there. YOu can email the market management from their nice website and ask. The market itself is fun anyway, especially in the winter.

Top 5 Restaurants to try in Queens?

How we wanted to like this new restaurant....really, we did. We tried it for lunch today and were sorely disappointed. The food is ordinary at best. We were totally unimpressed and for this money you can eat a lot better nearby. It irks us to be asked if we want sparkling water when we first sit down, too, and after we ordered two main courses we were asked if we wouldn't like to split a side of fries. If we wanted fries, we'd have asked. We don't quibble about paying more for a great meal. But for an ordinary meal, no thank you.

HomeMade Turkey in Queens Brooklyn delis?

You can get real whole turkey, sliced the way you want it, at the Butcher Block, just off Queens Blvd at 41 Street. Might be 40th.

Malagueta

My husband and I stopped in to Malagueta today for lunch--we were delighted to find that they have started serving lunch from Tuesday on (closed Monday). This talented chef has created a few new dishes for lunch at great prices. I had a superb bow tie pasta with salmon, broccoli and capers in a light tomato sauce. ($7) My husband had the corvina (from the dinner menu) with yucca sauce ($8). Both were delicious and freshly prepared. They have only been doing lunch again for 4 weeks. Many of the dinner appetizers are also available.

Girls' weekend in St. Petersburg

Take the trolley to Gulfport and enjoy a walk in a funky, arty town full of nice places and friendly people. Have a meal at Pia's Trattoria--outside. Or have a drink and some light food at O'Maddys. You'll love the change from St Pete Beach. Both are fun in their own way.

Good soups in Queens?

the soups at Sage General Store on Jackson Avenue (across from the Citibank building) are excellent. they have at least 4 every day including at least one vegetarian one. Mangal on Queens Boulevard at 47th Street has very good red lentil soup.

Best Pizza/Italian in Sunnyside/Woodside

Stop off in LIC at the Vernon/Jackson stop of the 7 and have really good pizza at Trattoria Rustica (Manducati's daughter Jenna's place) or Bella Via. Both are good, fresh sauce and real mozzarella cheese.

looking for good liquor store between Tampa and Longboat key

Just remember it's one exit north of the airport--otherwise you're over the big bridge and it's a long way back. When you get off at Dale Mabry, take the west bound exit. Slight right and go into the big shopping area on the left. it's right at the entrance. There's a decent Whole Foods there as well with not bad wine selection either. Good luck. And enjoy.

Anniversary weekend in st pete, dinner recs?

I suggest you try having lunch at the Reef on the beach in St. Pete Beach. It's totally funky but fresh and they treat you really well and it's a good locals kind of place. Totally the opposite of fine dining but a really fun place. Another nice place down that way is Nori Thai on Blind Pass Road. It's pretty authentic for Florida and the food is very good.

The best meal we had last winter was at The Pearl in Treasure Island. Things change quickly there but it was really fine and not that far a drive from the Don.

Review: Apiary at EV

We had our first and last dinner at Apiary tonight. Yes, it is Monday and we could BYO, but it wasn't worth it. The food was OK at best, heavy on the salt, as bustapoo just posted. The skate could have been fabulous but too salty. The arugula salad was very fine. My husband had the special, haddock, which was very good but the accompaniment was simply overseasoned and over-salted.

The noise level was simply intolerable. Do not go if you want to hear your partner's conversation. Overall, just eh. Definitely will skip returning.

Fresh seafood in the St. Pete area.

We live in Gulfport and NYC (half and half) and have found the seafood at SaveOn, on 49 Street at 15 Avenue South, to be the best in the area. They supply many local restaurants and the fish is very, very fresh. If you ask what's local they will be honest and you'll get fish never frozen and really good.

For Asian markets, there are 2 very good ones. One is on 62 Avenue North between 34 and 49 Streets on the right side when driving from 34 Street. That market has remarkably fresh veggies, etc. and is Vietnamese oriented. The other is on 34 Street, around 18th Avenue South and this one has Japanese and Chinese ingredients as well. Both are really very good markets--and we do have amazing ones in NYC. These compare well.

Mid Peninsula Seafood is a good place to take out well prepared and reasonably priced seafood. We haven't purchased any fish there as we prefer SaveOn.
