Santarpios or Kelly's Pub

I've not eaten at Kelly's, but numerous times at Santarpio's. Best way to "do" their pie at home is to buy their "half-cooked" pies, then finish in your preheated oven when ready to eat it. OMG GOOD! BTW, the sausage they put on their pie is different than the sausage you can get in the link form as a side dish. I prefer to order a plain cheese pie then a side order of link sausage, then crumble it up and put on the pizza myself, Outstanding! The Roasted Lamb is also a Great tasting snack, cooked over red hot coals by an Expert, who knows how to get the most flavor while still leaving the meaty chunks very tender. I try and eat there whenever arriving or leaveing Logan, for me a 25 year tradition, and I'M FROM BROOKLYN!!!!!!!!

Cutting boards dull knives?

you use the word "elegant". Do you mean "expensive"? Elegance is a word associated with DESIGN, and really has nothing to do with the quality of your cutting edge. I use a good quality steel blade, hone before each use, sharpen every year or so, sometimes twice in a year if lots of cutting, and have NO problems. I can shave each morning with my knives if wanted to. I work with a 28 year old set of Henckels. and they, like baseball, have been very, very good to me....
I now use plastic board set I purchased at Costco

College Park/Orlando Mexican

Not grouchy, you just know what you like and don't buy the hype! I've lived in Central Florida since '84 and this is the restaurant capitol of the world, more per capita than anywhere else. I've seen so many come and go, even good ones. I've learned to wait a few months after an opening to try one that looks/sounds interesting. If the crowds remain after a few months I'll try the lunch menu first, if good, I'll give dinner a go. I tend to remain happier since I started doing this, and believe I've saved a few shekels in the process. btw, bcodom's recommendation of TJ's is spot on. Also, there's a large community of Mexican Americans living in western Orange County. Happy Trails & Cheers to All!!!

College Park/Orlando Mexican

Sorry, but this hound tends to avoid places that would serve tiger shrimp wrapped in bacon accompanied by tequila-marinated mushrooms! I've eaten here with friends twice, not terrible, but I prefer PR's or El Potro, even Paco's.

Easy Chicken and Chive-Dumpling Soup

Fantastic! 2nd time I prepared this I added 1t dried thyme, split between dumplings and broth, halved the salt, doubled the garlic. As I read other reviewer's remarks I was happy to see other folks adjusting ingredients to their preference too. I think good cooks learn to adapt to new tastes and flavors as well as using ingredients that are more familiar to them and their families. Thanks for this one, as it has about a quarter of the fat of my usual recipe, yet all the taste and still good texture to the dumplings.

Is Light Roast Coffee Better Than Dark?

I let the experts at theroasterie.com decide how long to roast their beans. I used to roast my own, too much trouble and smoke!

Best Pizza in Orlando?

I've had the same problem RobM. Not cooked enough. Gotta have the black burned bits on the bottom of a crispy crust to be good.
I've driven by Paulie's a thousand times and never stopped in. I'm gonna try it soon though Kingl. Thanks for the tip.

Is Paco's in Orlando/Winter Park any good?

I've never been to Garibaldi's Apopka location and don't get out that way much MDHound, so I'm no help there!

Snowbird heading to Orlando Area

Here's an online version of a local paper. They have some decent descriptions/reviews of some local places. Check out the food section. GOOD LUCK!

Best Pizza in Orlando?

As a NY style pizza addict, I'm always looking out for a nice slice of heaven. Not impressed with Anthony's pizza, and seems as if they are buying up other local pizzarias, while not changing the menu at first, they are bringing in their own sourced ingredients. I believe they've bought both Brooklyn Pizza locations, one on Pershing, and the other on Fairbanks. I've also been told they've recently bought Alfonso's on Edgewater. I used to frequent these places and the quality of the pie has decreased, though not bad. My favorite Sicilian (square) slices come from Valdiano's in the Winter Park Village. They serve two versions, one traditional, and one with the sauce on top of the cheese, both good with pillowy, delicate dough, and seemingly just the right combination of cheese and sauce. I'm always on the hunt for the perfect pie here in Orlando, and appreciate everyone's input.

Man vs. Food challenges in central Florida

Not sure about other MVF places, but I really enjoy the sliced pork and beef, and the ribs at Kellers. I love the sauces too. Best "all around" bbq joint in Central Florida for my money.

4 Rivers Smokehouse Winter Park

How about Keller's in Altamonte Springs on Hwy 434 just south of 436? I love the food here. Great meats and very delicious sauces. Anyone else like this place?

4 Rivers Smokehouse Winter Park

Would never try and compare these two places. Shane's has since shut down, 4 Rivers will stay open for as long as the owner wants it to. Some of the best smoked brisket in town. Sauce is good. Cakes from "Atlanta" bakery are wonderful.

ORLANDO VISITOR'S DINING GUIDE - A Hound Perspective - Downtown-Winter Park-College Park areas

"Steak and Salad". I'd have this small restaurant on my "ethnic" list for this area. Tasty Turkish dishes for a fair price, and lunch specials. On 17/92 (Mills ave) just south of Virginia.

Is Paco's in Orlando/Winter Park any good?

You're right on all accounts MDhound. El Potro is close by and serves more authentic Mexican food. If you can take a bit of a drive, Garibaldi's on hwy 436/Colonial or in Apopka serves some very nice Mex food. Great tamales

Mediterranean Deli Orlando/Winter Park

I've eaten Gyros all over the world, this place serves one of the biggest and best I've had. The Greek salad and tabouleh are delicious as well. Not fancy, quite the opposite, but Fantastic tasting food at a very good price. I just ate there yesterday and the Owner told me his "cousin" and long time employee is soon to be opening up his own store with the same food on East Colonial close to UCF.

Orlando looking for great dives to eat in.

TooJay's Deli on colonial has a decent breakfast. If you like Gyros, a GREAT "hole in the wall" is the Mediterranean Deli on Fairbanks west of I-4. Walid serves World Class gyros for 4.95. Delicious Greek salad and soda for an extra two bucks.

Any tips for peeling green plantains for tostones?

I actually saw a news piece about Edwin and bought that exact set. Peeler is Unbelievably good. I can peel a hard green plantain in about five seconds now, and as a bonus, NONE of the sappy stuff gets stuck to my hand and under my nails. A must have, Phenomenal tool if you need to peel plantains. I just checked online and can't find any for sale though. His website is no longer in operation.

Ricotta Salata–Stuffed Figs with Port Reduction

I agree with Sean's point. Most of the time I'm on a time "budget" and it makes it much easier to see if I've got what I need if I can see a list of the needed ingredients.
