Old Posts let them die start new ones

Not really I just hate reading about places from 2005 and 2006 that do NOT exist anymore.. if you want to make a comment so be it, but it would be more in line if you posted to something that is current. The chef and many things can change in a place over the years and it is better to not resurrect a 2 year old post to add a comment make a NEW one
The wait staff the food choices and even if the places exists matter, and reading 3 year old stuff has ZERO bearing.

Old Posts let them die start new ones

Please don't dig up 2-3 year old posts. Most of the information in them is out dated at best and no longer valid. Start a new thread.

I think it might have been Sam Seltzers when you went, they only reopened in late October of 2010 as Harolds, after closeing in May as Sams so depending on when you went it could have been under the old management.

My original home base is Washington DC as well.. but I moved here 5 years ago.. to my taste buds horror. I was not referring to the food bill as the only part to reach $500 add in drinks, even if just beer and sangria. And your right but only on Tuesday. (All you can eat wings for $10-11 at. Quaker Steak & Lube on Tuesday.) Which is where I might TREAT a bunch of beer swilling PIGS, like the ones I used to hang with in my glory days. This is a reunion of sorts with some sports guys I played with.

Remember the bill is MORE than just food.

But your right, 10's of small plates would not be right anyway... but the service is SO bad we would have to go out to dinner after to actually EAT!.. the service is THAT BAD there. Maybe you got lucky but from the 10's or reviewers I have seen not just here but on other boards and reference maps etc... the service has been terrible at best.

It took MORE than an hour for me to get my order the first and only time I went and it came out WRONG, and 40 minutes to fix it. ZERO chance of a return visit.

Sadly I have been there. I will NEVER return the service was some of the worst I have ever encountered. Food was mid-land at best. And to take 4-5 guys to place like that (we are all over 6' and 220, would cost a small fortune easy $500 tab) appetizers all night is not what I'm looking for.
the atmosphere there isn't very good either but the decor is about the only thing nice. Now I have heard they are hit or miss on the food.. I must have been there on a MISS... but the service alone killed it.

half my friends would beat the wait staff to get thier orders I would have to bail them all out of jail :)

WTF is happening to them all?
I just did a check for giggles and it seems that 1/2 of them are closed.
Ponderosa closed (gross)
Durango closed
Long Horn closed
Sam Seltzer closed
Beef O Brady's closed ( might be a location in pasco still open)

this was a UBER quick check on places to grab a quick cheap steak, is the only thing left Outback?

Sadly I'm thinking if I try other "types" of foods, OTHER than pizza, I'm going to find the same thing.
I drive up 4th and 9th and rt19 all the time and I see nothing but places closing, seems like 2 a day.

Are we down to fast food and poor chains as our only places to eat?

I have tried to find a GOOD Chinese place in St. Pete and to date NONE! Marbo was good but closed I liked the stir fry while you waited option to the all you can eat, was great you got to pick what you wanted put it in a bowl and hand it to the guy and he would cook it right there for you.

95% of the Chinese I find is NY style which, no offense, SUCKS!! I know of two places that I ordered beef sishuan twice from and BOTH place BOTH times gave me different things.
most of them just throw crap together and call it whatever you ordered. GROSS and RUDE.
I'm used to what you get at P.F. changs (though I have never been there) the description that is.
shredded beef and Julianne celery, carrots and green peppers, in a spicy sauce. And half the sauces taste like southern gravy... YUK. YES I have been to ABC seafood nice and good food very traditional. but I'll looking for the "local carry-out" type. NOTHING even comes close.

It's seems that being a foodie in St. Pete is a waste of time, might as well join a cooking club.

I'm looking for a place to take 3-4 friends that are coming down this winter and they are NOT rich so we need REASONABLE places (IE Berns is a NO!!) (I can't afford to fed the planet either).

Seems like I'll be cooking flesh on the grill.. and making tacos and stir fry at home.

St. Pete has gotten so SAD in the last 3-4 years anywhere that is anything has closed

Ocean Prime - Tampa

Strange to have two people have totally and completely different opinions of the music.
one says it was great and not loud and the other says he SUCKED and was loud.. on the SAME night. amazing.

In Beth's defense the music was piped in... and could have been VERY loud.. as you were in the bar and it might have been set at a different volume level. I for one think and agree that loud music during dining is uncalled for. now when your just out drinking and having a good time... all bets are off.

What this does tell me is that it's not a good place for an intimate dinner if you have to YELL to be heard across the table, that would pretty much ruin the evening.

Lobsters on sale in South Florida??

NEWSFLASH for anyone looking to buy lobster over the internet or phone or whatever from Maine. granted MAYBE it will be fresher (not likely since the stuff here is alive as well) but the cost per LB is almost a joke I have yet to find any place that will ship lobster for LESS than $32 LB for chix 1.25each. (~$80 for the package) ( these numbers are for 2 lobsters) The average was closer if not over $40LB for the little ones(~88)... and $45 for ones that are getting closer to 2LBs each.(~$90)

If you think you can get a lobster from Maine that is A) fresher than a LIVE one here... or B) cheaper... WAKE UP... There is ZERO chance you can get it for less than the stores that bulk order. You can get lobster VERY fresh from your local markets... just make a weird order that they must ORDER... 2LB's or something they do not normally carry. they WILL order it and tell you the DAY they will arrive.. (hint: in the future you will know when they get fresh shipments for the future whims)

I mean if you get the lobster for $5 LB... lets do some math..
1.25LB each x $5 per LB x2 = 12.50 in lobster.. than means $67.50 in SHIPPING
NEW price (more realistic)
1.25LB x $12LB x 2 = $30 for the lobster... even if the price to get them is the same that is still $50 in shipping costs.

I can get lobster cheaper and for TONS less local.... AND I can go out to eat... have wine and someone to clean up after me for LESS!
So unless...
A) money is no object.. which normally means your NOT reading this
B) your math challenged, which normally means nothing we can do will help you
C)your trying to impress someone, which normally means your gonna take them out anyway.
LOCAL is 100% of the time better

Dives in St. Pete area.

perfect I'll try it. That is what I'm looking for... hard to find GREAT places to eat. Since I've only lived here a year I don't know all the places, and the "hole in the wall" places is what I miss most about up north. I knew every place, where I lived and now I gotta find those types of places again. Thanks for the heads up, it will be on the list.

Dives in St. Pete area.

I'm gonna be batching it for a few weeks next month and am looking for inexpensive dives to try.
Any kind of food works for me, burgers, wings, ethnic, anything. Since I'll be alone I'm NOT interested in expensive places just good food. Please no chains McDonalds and Golden Corral don't cut it :) Help me find those "hole in the wall" places everyone loves. Asian, Mexican, Italian, seafood... ANYTHING.

Fresh seafood in the St. Pete area.

While that is good advice I have seen some (from up north) big chain places that have serviceable bakeries and veggies.. bakeries are in house so if they KNOW how to make it it should be good not great but GOOD. (read usable) As for veggies where I was up north, in the DC area, the markets got veggies local for like 7-8 months of the year and had a good selection. Publix , WD and such just do NOT. As for fish I have had better shrimp in the local big chains up north that what I have found down here (4 purchases) at local stores now local distribution centers can fix many of those issues down here but I would guess either they don't have that or it just gets to hot during transport I have also been to a few local markets and to be honest they don't excite me even a little bit..
The original queaston is where to find it... not that Publix/WD do not have them and why.
I would still buy all those items in a big chain, up north, if in a rush and not interesting in great food, but down here I will NOT. Publix wrapped veggies almost assures you that they are A0 old and rubbery or not in the quantity that you want. so quantity and quality suffer. The only veggies that look OK are at shops with stands at the saturday fair in downtown St. Pete. As for meats and fish they are hit and miss ANYWHERE I have shopped so far and mostly MISS. Don't blame the Big chains for food food cause they are big chains blame them cause they do not have local distribution centers, or refrigerated trucks. Planes can get you fresh LIVE Maine lobsters here they can get anything else here FRESH too.; (not that expensive in BULK and other places do it.)
Now I will give you that the area I came from what much high in population but still...

Fresh seafood in the St. Pete area.

I just moved to St. Pete from up north, and am looking for a place that sells FRESH seafood. I tried publix and Winn Dixie and they both SUCK. you would think that stores near the shore could get something reasonably fresh... but NOOOOOO. There must be a fish wharf somewhere that sells seafood that has NOT been frozen for a few months prior to being thawed and tasteless. Next I'll have to find a REAL Asian market. Lucky I found a few bakeries in the area since french bread should be something crusty on outside and flavorful on the inside.. Publix doesn't know this. and their hard rolls aren't!!! HELP me find REAL GOOD food in the St. Pete area before I go nuts! I got better seafood 500 miles from the ocean than I can 300 yards from it! I thought the gulf was the shrimp heaven... guess they must all go to Texas :)
