In Louisville visiting in-laws

In Louisville visiting in-laws and would like to take the family to dinner. My husband and I usually go to Lily's and/or Jack Fry, but looking for something more casual. The group will include kids and adults who are picky eaters. My mother-in-law is known for her soul food, so seems like a good idea to stay away from that. Chinese seems to be something everyone can agree on. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks, southern 'hounds.

Monica, you are right, of course, about it being a nice gesture. But, I envy you a bit. I'm not in a position to pick up the bill right now--I wish I was. Since I suggested we might go elsewhere (including several of the suggestions on this thread--thanks chowhounds), I haven't heard a peep from her. Sigh. I just want a good meal that someone else cooked! Ah well. My kids will complain about me some day, but I doubt it will be related to food!

It's not a place I would choose to go to (I've been there several times for family events). The food is not exactly memorable. Plus, I'm looking for a more upbeat celebratory atmosphere.

Save me from my mother

My mother wants to take me to lunch to celebrate my recent academic promotion. Where? The Princeton Club. Honestly, I'd rather eat a hot dog on the street. I'm being dramatic for effect and don't mean to sound ungrateful. I'm lucky to have a mom who wants to do something lovely for me, but I get out so infrequently (I have little kids), that great food AND atmosphere really matter. So, where to suggest instead? Here are the places she has taken me to over the last few years: The Oak Room, The Knickerbocker, The Water Club, The Century, The Players Club--you see what I mean. Maybe some newer classic New York restaurants? A little less stuffy. Thanks in advance!

Recs for City College Area?

Any recent additions to the food scene or "must try" places I may have missed? High brow. low brow, any type--we do it all as long as it is good quality and flavor. Thanks!

Help me spice up a boring potluck party

It's time for our holiday party (a small international non-profit--think overworked harried humanitarians). It is semi-catered by a terrible place, but that is not something in my power to change. This year several of us are bring appetizers. No known allergy issues. No place to reheat and because of the timing, any hot dish would be room temp at serving time.

So, any suggestions on cold or room temp interesting dishes? I know several colleagues enjoy Thai, Korean, and Vietnamese cooking (as do I).

Thanks in advance!

Shrimp recipes

Hosting a dinner party that includes small children, ravenous college students and some older folks. Few of them are adventurous eaters. As a starter, thinking of pork dumplings, which these kids love. Main dish will be shrimp. Looking for suggestions beyond shrimp scampi. Any recipes recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Casual, romantic

OP: Thanks for the advice. Since we were going to Lincoln Center, for the sake of convenience, we tried Ed'S Chowder House. Never again. What a mistake. The worst soft-shell crab I have ever had. The chowders were mediocre at best--the New England clam chowder was particularly awful. Too smokey. The service was awful. That's what happens when you don't read reviews.

I don't mind waiting for a table. Price--$25-35 for main course...?

Any recs? Does not have to be new--an old favorite? Cozy neighborhood joints? Prefer seafood and seasonal menu. Also love Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Mexican. I love French alas, hubby does not. No Italian restaurants.

Any neighborhood in Manhattan, but prefer to stay away from midtown and anything too trendy or a place with a scene.

Thanks!

Rec for dinner in Bergen County?

OP: It's been a while since I logged on. We went to Park Steakhouse in Park Ridge and it was very good. Not amazing, but I would go back. Good wine, good lamb, steak, and service was excellent.

Rec for dinner in Bergen County?

We are staying in Woodcliff Lake this weekend and would love some recs for dinner. Prefer a place that uses local seasonal ingredients, but we love all cuisine. Partial to seafood, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, Latin. Does not have to be fancy--just delicious! Thanks in advance!
