Sarasota: Best Seafood - Shrimp and Fish
Fish markets should smell of the sea/ocean. There's a big difference between a briny smell and the kind of fishy (spoiled fish) odor I'm talking about.
Sarasota: Best Seafood - Shrimp and Fish
Casey Key Fish House is good. Very casual, but the fish is fresh and well prepared. On the high end, I suggest The Table Creekside. Owen's Fish Camp is another good fish place.
Special lunch in Sarasota?
I'd like to take a friend for a special birthday lunch this month. Something with some ambiance and excellent food. Suggestions please?
Sarasota: Best Seafood - Shrimp and Fish
This place reeks of fish. Our waitress had a filthy uniform. Very unappetizing. I won't return.

I agree that it needs a makeover. There's also a fishy smell which is not a good sign of freshness.
Pre-cooked dinners by mail?
I want to send my elderly mother-in-law pre-cooked dinners that she can simply microwave. She lives in upstate NY. She has very basic "meat and potatoes" tastes so I'm not looking for anything fancy. I'd like to simply pick the meals for her and send her a couple of them per month. Suggestions?
Restaurant near St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa?
One more interesting note about Cafe Dufrain that makes it high on my list. I got a call today from the restaurant manager, asking how I enjoyed my meal. She said she wanted to follow up to see if there's anything they can do to improve their food and service. This has never happened to me before. I told her I was impressed with the restaurant and extremely impressed with the call. I told her I had posted a review on chowhound.com and would add a note about the call. And here it is.
Restaurant near St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa?
I went to Cafe Dufrain, which is directly is on Harbour Island, directly across from the St. Pete Times Forum. We ate outside, with a view of the water. The food was good, the service friendly and the prices moderate. It wasn't crowded at all. We parked our car in the garage just around the corner from the restaurant (the restaurant gave us the validation number so we didn't have to pay for parking), and then walked across the bridge to the Forum. It was a nice, 5-10 min. walk. We were able to miss the traffic leading in/out of the arena and saved the usual $10 parking fee.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I've chosen Cafe Dufrain and will report after I've been there.

Do you know if Columbia Cafe takes reservations?

Going to a concert next weekend. Any suggestions for dinner in the general vicinity of St. Pete Times Forum? A nice American, Italian or Thai restaurant would be great. Thanks.
Good casual waterfront recs in Sarasota?
Try Waterfront and Waterfront Too on Route 41. They're on the water (on inlets) -- not the prettiest view, but it'll pass. Very casual and decent food with terrific beer batter rolls. Enjoy your visit.
Moving to Nokomis!
I'm also a (part-time) Nokomis resident, living at the Venetian Golf and River Club. My favorites are Curry Creek Cafe, Scamotz (terrific salad and pizza) , Crow's Nest and Cafe Venice -- great roast duck (on Venice Ave.). I agree with most of the others that the food here leaves much to be desired. They're behind the times: seafood places specialize in fried fish and very basic preparations. Sharkey's is a touristy place -- fun, but ok food. The thing I miss most down here is good Chinese food. When I asked for brown rice at one place, they thought I meant fried rice. Other places don't even have brown rice. The Chinese food is in a time warp. There's also no good Indian places I've found -- there's one in a shopping center on Clark Rd. but it's not very good. Take a drive to Sarasota for better food choices.
Catalan food glossary? [moved from Spain/Portugal board]
Thanks for coming through once again! Just what I needed.

Does anyone know of a website that provides some basic Cataloan to English translations for food in Barcelona?

Wow! You're terrific. Thanks for taking the time to give me such a thorough answer. I'll print out your post and bring it along with me.
Dining with teen - Madrid, Seville, Barcelona
My daughter and I will be in Spain the last week in August (I know, not the best time to be there, but the school schedule is an issue). We're staying at a hotel near the Santa Ana neighborhood in Madrid, on the Gran Via de las Cortes Catalanas in Barcelona, and on the Calle Trajana (near the Plaza del Duque) in Seville.
My daughter is 17, and -- like many teens -- she is not a very adverturous eater. She's not big on fish, but she'll eat basics like salmon, and will try paella. Many of the meals in Spain seem quite different than what she's used to.
Any restaurant and food suggestions? I'd like to take her to good places for dinner with nice atmosphere and unpretentious service. We really don't want to get dressed up...
...which begs the question: What are the dress codes for these restaurants?
