Good (and bad) Restaurant Week experiences
I don't get the reference to your age? There are obviously big chunks of the full story missing here.
Under-the-radar brunch rave: Sage
Thanks for the report. I had a nice dinner at the bar at Sage on Friday night and some customers next to me were raving about the breakfast pizza. sounds great.
Reliably good seafood (especially fried) restaurant?
It resembles a VFW, Sons of Italy, or Polish Falcons club in Anywhere, USA.
Arancini in Boston
I agree. Stella used to have a nice moist arancini. Has anyone tried theirs lately?
Has anyone tried Sensing?
"like the breakfast room in a suburban Doubletree."
That's perfect. It reminds me of my description of Rocca, a 1970's Ramada Inn look.
Sounds like Sensing is better at the bar.
Breakfast - Back bay, boston common general area
Charlie's Sandwich Shop on Columbus Ave. Nice walk on a nice day.
private dinner space for 15-20 people
Are you a chowhound and a foodie??
The back room at Lucca might work for you.
Concord full breakfast?
Hey Harp- Thought I'd chime in here. I went back to Helen's again this morning because of work. This place makes a great, basic American breakfast. The home fires are perfectly cooked red bliss potatoes w/onions and green peppers, and the sausages are some of the best I've had in a long time. Toast was hearty slices of wheat bread, a little thicker, and a lot higher quality and more flavorful than greasy spoon-type bread. A lot of attention to detail in purchasing and on the grill shines through. Service was great. My usual go-to places are Mike's and Charlie's in the South End, and Helen's was excellent. It is significantly better than Brigham's ever used to be. I would never drive to Helen's just for breakfast, but if you're traveling through Concord, it's a rock-solid recommendation. Thanks again Blumie. Bear, when is the last time you ate at Helen's?
Concord full breakfast?
Thank you very much Blumie. I got your post at 6am this morning and was at Helen's by 7. You're right, it was exactly what I was looking for, and it was only a few doors down from my 8am meeting. Perfect suggestion.
Concord full breakfast?
Is there a greasy spoon on main street near where all the shops are? I need something right in the center that is open by 7am and serves the whole nine yards. Thank you.
Old School Boston?
I'm very disappointed in Marliave's restoration/preservation. That's not my definition of "old school" at all. In my opinion, there's no sense of the speak easy, old-world charm that a lot of people reference. Locke Ober is quintessential old-school Boston.
First time in Boston...give me Top 5 must eat at restaurants
Blue Ginger is a bum steer and it's in the suburbs.
Where are you from, and what are some of the comparable restaurants in your town that you'd like us to steer you to?
Where are you staying? Do you have a car?
What's your price range?
What types of foods are you looking for?
What is important to you? Meeting people, atmosphere, etc. , in addition to the food.
You'll save everyone a lot of time, including yourself , if you give us as much detail as possible. You'll get lots of thoughtful responses if you put some effort into your inquiry.
Sully's Southie: A Rite of Spring
Despite the forecast, spring is coming. Nice piece in today's Globe by Billy Baker on Sullivan's hot dog and burger shack at Castle Island in South Boston. They have extended their traditional 75-cent season-opening special on hot dogs through Tuesday this year. My favorite is the double cheeseburger on a grilled bun and the waffle fries. Something about the seasoned grill and simplicity of this place makes it worth the field trip a couple of times a year.

The Antique Table on the Lynn/Swampscott line
BJ- Thank you for the post. I need to meet a friend for dinner in Lynn next week so I'll go to AT based on your recommendation.
Olive Bars?
There is a little specialty grocery store on Shawmut Ave. near South End Formaggio. Maybe someone can help out with the name and exact address. They have an interesting selection of olives. It's worth stopping in if you're in the neighborhood. Be sure to call ahead, the hours are sporadic. The Franklin Cafe' is a few doors down if you want to grab an early dinner.
South End dining for a group of 12-15
Sorry, but Rocca reminds me of a Ramada Inn from the 70's. I don't like the private room, and the upstaira diningroom reminds me of a cruise ship. Do they still have that big blue wave thing in the ceiling?
Is Anthony's Pier 4 really that awful?
I realize this is a no-brainer but be sure to check out the venue yourself before booking it. Your perception of "water views" at the Meritage might not match Kate's. Yes you can see water, but it's not as if you get a sweeping view of the Atlantic ocean. It's an obstructed view of the harbor. Very similar to the "water views" at the Barking Crab and Dante', or the "views of the common" at #9 Park or Troquet. Posts can be very misleading. The view from troquet is a small section of graveyard on the common. Unless you have the perfect table upstairs during the perfect viewing season, the view is nothing special at all at Troquet, despite the generalizations many people make about it.
On second thought, tired describes Pier 4 really well. Maybe you can find a new manager or event planner there who will work with you and address your concerns about service and some of the other issues raised here. Maybe some simple food family-style? They obviously need the business. The views are nice, and the free parking is an added bonus.

You could split a bunch of dishes at Estragon. Much cooler space, vibe and food than Rocca. Be sure to check out the authentic tapas menu first.
Is Anthony's Pier 4 really that awful?
Sounds like a perfect fit for what you're looking for. I went 6 months ago and it was fine. Take the haters and skeptics with a grain of salt.
Open kitchen restuarants?
Olives has a chef's table with a great view.
