Chicken shawarma on Yonge between College and Dundas

I love the food at this place.

Sushi downtown Toronto. Suggestions?

I just went to Yuzu yesterday and we had Sushi Regular and Sashimi Deluxe from their regular menu. I was disappointed because I went in expecting the fish to be fresh but it was NOT at all...neither was the wasabi.

But the service was great as was the presentation. It's just too bad the fish wasn't fresh.

We also had the Green Tea Tiramisu (not on their regular menu) for dessert. I couldn't taste the green tea at all.

So all in all I'm probably never going back there again unless it improves.

Guu is Guu(d) – review + pics

Thanks for the detailed review and pics. I definitely have to go check it out!

Great Authentic Chinese Rest uptown?

My family and I prefer Lucky Season Cuisine at Times Square plaza (Hwy 7 & Leslie). We go there for dinner every weekend. It's at the northwest corner of the parking lot, BETWEEN the entrance to parking lot stairs and an electronics store. On the other (ie. south) side of the stairway entrance is a bookstore, a lighting store (has glass displays), a chinese medicine store, etc. On the other (ie. east) side of the electronics store is the parking lot road and then a jewelry store (I think), etc.

We also go there for dimsum.

Afternoon tea alternative to Windsor Arms

Has anyone tried the afternoon tea at The Old Curiosity Tea Shop in Markham? I've been meaning to go check it out for awhile now. Will probably go in about 2 months time (after all the Christmas and New Year's gatherings).

Decent afternoon tea in Toronto?

Anyone happen to remember the price for afternoon tea at Old Curiosity?

Hong Kong Street Food in Toronto

that's why I make my own curry fish balls so it'll be the right level of spicy for me.

i just miss all the different flavours of gai dan chais.

Hong Kong Street Food in Toronto

Went at 11 and definitely worth the wait since they were just opening up. It was so good.

Hong Kong Street Food in Toronto

Just got back from satisfying my craving. I got to the Tung Tung at Pacific Mall before it opened so I went to the Tung Tung in Market Village. I'm so glad I wasn't the only one waiting for gai dan chai. Although I believe I was the only adult there getting it for myself.

Winterlicious - Majority terrible, why people still bother going?!!

Winterlicious - Majority terrible, why people still bother going?!!

My friends and I tried out three Winterlicious menus: Ouzeri, Amaya, and 1055 Plakutta. Out of all 3, I only liked the food from Amaya. Maybe my expectations were a little too high, who knows.

I just got back from 1055 so the experience is still fresh in my mind. I had the vegetable spring rolls to start, a honey mustard glazed atlantic salmon filet for my main dish, and a warm apple strudel with vanilla ice cream for dessert. The spring rolls was pretty good - both with and without the Thai dipping sauce. The mixed greens that came with it tasted like it was soaked in alcohol. The salmon was kind of bland and overcooked. The apple strudel wasn't warm as was expected based on its name listed on the menu.

My friend had the pear and walnut salad to start, wild mushroom risotto for main, and strawberry cheese dumpling for dessert. The salad had about 4 slices of pear, 1 walnut, and the pear slices tasted like they were also soaked in alcohol. The risotto was what one would expect from a risotto. My friend didn't like the texture of the strawberry cheese dumpling - mushy and kind of like a rice pudding.

Ideas for a Monday night special occasion?

I've been trying to get people to go for Scaramouche's Lobsterlicious with me but no luck. Check out http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/589562 for reviews of this year's Lobsterlicious.

Hong Kong Street Food in Toronto

Thanks for posting pics! Now I have a craving for them.

I love getting them at Pacific Mall but unfortunately there are none here that can compare to the best ones in HK. But they will have to do until I can visit HK again.

Teppanyaki in Toronto

My first choice is Benihana at the Fairmont Royal York hotel. http://benihana.sites.toronto.com/menu.html

Second choice would be A Taste of Japan (as mentioned by sweetie).

Toronto, Markam Area Chinese Recomendations

I agree with rebe1.
It may be difficult to locate Aoyama but it's in the plaza south of the gas station at Van Horne & Victoria Park. It's best to do omakase there if you're going for sushi & sashimi because the selection listed on the actual menu is fairly small.

Altho for seafood, I prefer to go to Lucky Season (in Times Square at Hwy 7 & Leslie).

MODERN SUSHI BAR TORONTO DATE MATERIAL!

OMG I'm such an idiot. I got the names mixed up. luckbamboo's right. Thanks! It's Mochizuki that has the conveyor belt. So sorry!

high-end Chinese in Richmond Hill? Help!

I wouldn't consider Peaktop "high end".

You could try Diamond Banquet Hall (It's actually in the same plaza as Peaktop but closer to Fairburn Dr. ). I've only been there for dimsum recently though. I usually go to Lucky Season, which is in Times Square (Hwy 7 and Leslie).

MODERN SUSHI BAR TORONTO DATE MATERIAL!

Ichimi Sushi (66 Edward Street) has a conveyor belt. The food was okay, nothing extraordinary. The closest major intersection is Dundas & Bay.

I like going to Siji (143 Dundas Street West) for sushi. Sorry they don't have a conveyor belt though.

Omakase on a budget - Help me decide!

late night chinese dessert places?

The Sugar is next to Congee Wong.

Late Night Dessert Places in North York/Richmond Hill

There's also The Sugar. It's at Finch & Leslie, in the same plaza as Congee Wong.

Going through withdrawal pains from weekend in Victoria

yeah we never got around to that when i was there. Glad you liked it!

More Authentic Japanese Food!

haha i see a part of me in the second picture (ie. the handrolls). i loved the omakase there!

Red Velvet Cake

I've tried Starbuck's Red Velvet cupcake and they're pretty good - although I haven't tried other Red Velvet (cup)cakes so I really don't have anything for comparison.

Amaya Winterlicious

Wow sounds like you had a pretty bad experience. I actually liked Amaya. We had the tandoori duo, parsi paté, butter chicken, seafood xacutti, rice pudding, and spiced chocolate brownie. My comments and photos are at http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/593583

Something that I didn't mention: our food came at a really good pace - wasn't rushed or too slow.

Amaya - winterlicious review

More pics.

Amaya - winterlicious review

A friend and I just went to Amaya on Wednesday night to try out their Winterlicious menu and it was completely packed. So glad I made reservations.

We enjoyed our appetizers (tandoori duo and parsi paté). The tandoor duo was the perfect degree of spiciness for me. Granted I didn't try the paté because I'm not a fan of liver but my friend seemed to like it. =) After the appetizers, I was really looking forward to the mains.

You were right about the butter chicken being a tiny portion. I thought it was the size of an appetizer. I had the seafood xacutti and it tasted great with the naan and basmati rice.

We had the rice pudding and spiced chocolate brownie for dessert. I tried a bit of the rice pudding and I couldn't really taste anything (is that what it's supposed to taste like? this is the first time I've tried it.) However I really liked the brownie and my portion wasn't as dense as you described. It was certainly very rich but I didn't have any difficulty using one hand to cut it with my fork. Maybe I got lucky? =)

The service was wonderful. Our server/waiter (what's the politically correct term?) was very attentive (as you had mentioned), polite and friendly. We also didn't feel rushed even though I saw different groups of people waiting for a table during my time there.

I tried to take pictures of the dishes. They looked ok on the display but most of them turned out pretty dark. But I'll post them anyways.
