Carol Gardens's Profile

Van Horn Sandwich Shop now open

I did balk at the price, but that fried chicken sandwich is darn near perfect!

Great brunch at Kevin's on Van Brunt

I had a great lobster dinner there last 4th of July. They get their lobsters from Red Hook Lobster pound.

Classic Eats in Brooklyn - MD person traveling up that way

Along the lines of classic Italian, I also recommend Ferninando's on Union Street near Hicks. Sam's for pizza (nothing else) on Court near Kane.

Classic Eats in Brooklyn - MD person traveling up that way

I just went to Queen for someone's birthday last week. It was really wonderful. The mozzarella appetizer is the best I have ever had. They make it fresh daily. Generic decor, colorful clientele, fantastic eats.

atlantic antic this sunday

I really liked the lamb sandwich at Jolie last year. I also usually go for the fried chicken and sides at the church where the lady sings "Ice tea! Get yer ice tea!" all day. The line is always super slow, though.

Sue Perette (on Smith between DeGraw and Sackett)

There is a unique place a few blocks away on Smith (as mentioned above) that has a sign that used to say JOE'S SUPERETTE. But some of the letter fell down and were never replaced so it now says JOE'S PERETTE. It is famous for delicious fried proscuitto balls. It is rather odd and I assume the owners of SUE PERETTE may be paying homage to JOE'S. Or maybe they just like the term superette and thought it sounded like a woman's name.

biscuits in Park Slope area?

I'm not much of a cook, but biscuits are pretty easy. In my opinion, the key is that you MUST use lard. Nothing else provide the proper flakiness. So veggies are out-of-luck on this one. Also, kneading should be minimal.

Buttermilk Channel in CG

Went here for Valentines Day. Very glad they took reservations because it was packed. I really loved the fried chicken and waffles. (I miss fried chicken from Chicory on Degraw, since they closed. Of course this was pricier, but I thought it was tasty and crisp. Large portion, btw.) My boyfriend has the short ribs and he was a very happy camper. Shared the pecan pie sundae.

Good fries Carroll Gardens or Cobble Hill?

I second Tabac. My favorite fries around here.

bouillabaisse

Chez Napoleon on west 50th. Very rich! And the kindly waitress will mix in the rouille for you.

Anyone been to the re-opened Oak Bar?

Just wondering if anyone has had the chance to check it out. I've been peeking through the windows for many months and I believe it had reopened. I plan on going but was wondering if they ruined it, improved it, or something in the middle. The murals are the same but it looks like the patina of age is gone on everything else!

OUTERBOROUGH ECONOMEALS under $10 PP

Malecon in Washington Heights. I love the rotisserie chicken. You can stuff yourself for about 10-15 bucks a person. And you will probably have leftovers.

Also, my fave supercheap lunch is Congee Village on Allen Street. It gets too crazy dinner and weekends but lunch is mellow. I get congee with roast duck and meatballs and some scallion pancakes. I think it comes out about $8 or so.

Prix Fixe Menus in Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Fort Greene, and surroundings

I just walked past Cafe on Clinton and they have a new sign out for a 3-course prix fixe Monday-Friday from 5-8. Only $18. Seems like a good deal. Can't remember all the choices (I think there were about 4 choices each for app and main; you also get dessert.) French Onion soups and Shrimp Cocktail stuck in my mind for apps. Report back if anyone goes! I hope to try it soon.

Carroll Gardens rut...its a good thing!!!

They said they would reopen in Spring. I would think that without the backyard, it is so small that it would be difficult to make a go of it in the winter months. Not much foot traffic over there. I actually enjoy the place--mostly in warm weather for brunch.

Carroll Gardens rut...its a good thing!!!

I got an email from Pit Stop a few weeks back that said that they will be CLOSING for the winter.

I want to find a diner like the ones you see on Food TV.

If you happen to be heading up to the Hudson Valley, the historic village diner in Red Hook, NY impressed me recently with a great breakfast.

http://www.roadsideonline.com is a great source of diner info.

Lucali's closed for lunch, Grimaldi's line too long, Franny's boring, DiFara mobbed, Tottono's too far...Try Sam's

I love this place and I love the pizza. You get to know most the jokes after a while!

Ted and Honey (red deli space)

So glad there I can go back to picking up a sandwich and eating in the park. I also noticed that Cafe on Clinton has a sign about "Mommy and Me" boxed lunches by Marc Elliot. Anyone know what that's about?

Sweet Melissa's new ice cream wing now open

I had a cone on their second day and I truly thought it was a rip-off. I think the one scoop was about $3.50 and it was tiny! I was actually going to say, "Are you kidding with the size of that scoop?", but I decided to pay and just not go back. And the ice cream was just okay. Too bad, because I was hoping for something better.

Fried whole belly clams

Bigelow's is great. It is easy to stop there if you are on your way to Jones Beach, Fire Island, Hamptons, or any other destinations on the South Shore of LI.

Lyon Sausage (w/Pistachios)

Is there any place that either serves or sells Lyonnaise sausage (the kind with pistachios in it)? I haven't been to Paris in about 6 years (stupid exchange rate!) but I use to love it with warm potato salad. I'd love to try to find a restaurant or specialty store that carries it here. Thanks!

date at Freebird Books & Goods in Red Hook. Any recos?

Maybe your date already took place, but Ferdinando's on Union is atmospheric time-warp Italian, Petite Crevette (as mentioned) has great seafood, Alma is upscale Mexican with some lovely roof seating (reservations a must on weekends). Not much else is standout. unless you cross the BQE What's "Goods"? And btw, that stretch of Columbia Street is NOT near the main drag of Red Hook on Van Brunt--closer to Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens.

Bar Tabac, service trashed..

I'm not sure what the problem is at Bar Tabac. I do like their food but I have had some bad experiences with service. I recall that one of the summertime waitresses told me that she came in from France for a few months to make some money and then she was going back for school. She was very cute and young so I agree that perhaps the staff is not always hired for their chops.

Another call for Cafe on Clinton reviews

I'll reply to myself. I did have an excellent roast chicken there recently/

Tamales on Sackett near Smith

I always wondered about the lady who set up a tent on Sackett near Smith and sells homemade food including tamales. Well, there was a block-long stoop sale last weekend and I finally was able to check it out. Has a really moist and tasty tamale for $1.35. Just a tip for those who can't always make it out to Sunset Park. (Don't know if she has a reliable schedule: she seems to be there in warm weather on weekends.)

Sweet Melissa coffee -- pushing her luck

The prices are really high, but I must say that the $28 expresso cheesecake that I brought to Mother's Day brunch was a HUGE hit with my family.

Restaurants you love that are rarely mentioned on Chowhound

Sadly, this place is now closed.

French Romantic Birthday Dinner in NYC?

I have done birthday dinner at Le Gigot and really enjoyed it. I also like Provence in Soho.

Biscuits and Gravy

I was just reading the Chicken Fried Steak thread and it made my think of Biscuits and Gravy. Any suggestions? I recently had it at Stan's Place on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. It was okay but the gravy was bright orange! I have no idea why. Anyplace I can get this in the city or nearby?
