Foiled by Fonda San Miguel again.

FSM has a wonderful Sunday brunch, so you can go there the day after your show for a fantastic meal! I like it better than their dinner menu. I hope it works with your schedule. Many consider it overpriced, but I don't mind it as a splurge once in a while.

Petit Fours in Austin, TX

I'd like to serve petits fours at an upcoming afternoon party for teenaged girls. This thread is pretty old. Anyone out there had petits fours lately? I'm not too concerned about the price. Thanks!

Meh! Experience @ Uchi!?

I suspect that all of the removed posts on this thread ridiculed chowdahhead for incorrectly and absurdly stating that Texas is landlocked.

We've been dining at Uchi for several years and I can't remember eating anything that wasn't delicious. Our family favorites include the machi cure, shag roll, pitchfork roll, shiromi nabe, kona kanpachi, tempura tiger shrimp, endo roll, spicy tuna roll, wagyu beef hot rock, and we enjoy the specials, too.

Good food around Zilker, the zoo, and UT campus?

Before you get your heart set on the bats make sure they'll be there at this time of year. They're migratory, I think.

I would also take the kiddo to the Dell Children's Museum one day and coordinate it with a downtown or South Congress restaurant.

Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

I love love love chocolate chip cookies.

Texas French Bread has good ones. If you're not a purist, consider the Peanut Butter Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies at Upper Crust. The texture is wonderfully chewy and the chocolate chunks are dark and rich. There are pecans in those, too.

Annual Trip (at the holidays) please vet my list!

For Mexican you should try Garrido's. It is new and has great food and ambience. My friends, daughter, husband and I are crazy for it. Another place you may like is FINO. The food is very good and has nice outdoor dining, weather permitting. I always use gift certificates there from restaurant.com. (By the way, they are 80% off for the next couple of days!) In the high-end category you may want to check out Olivia. It has received some national attention lately. (Wall Street Journal weekend edition a few weeks ago.) Brunch there is yummy, too.

Need a place with a meeting room

The new AT&T conference center/hotel on campus next to the Blanton museum has a variety of meeting rooms + catering. The UT club and Alumni Center are options also. Eastside Cafe on Manor road has a series of small rooms and takes reservations so maybe you could fill a small room.

Best Guacamole in Austin

I love it that you were on a rutabaga run! Takes me back to childhood when my dad's standing joke when we'd ask what's for dinner was, "rutabaga pie." We had no idea what that was, but it didn't sound good!

Cantina Laredo is downtown on Colorado at 3rd St. I can't vouch for anything other than their guacamole, unfortunately, because I haven't been there for a while and don't remember what else I ate! There is one at the D terminal at DFW airport, and my husband and I had great guacamole there last month.

Best Guacamole in Austin

At restaurants I particularly like my guac made tableside so that I know it's very fresh and I have some input regarding what goes into it, and locally Iron Cactus and Cantina Laredo both make theirs tableside. Granted, they both are chains, but if we're purely talking guacamole, both are great.

Lately at the Westgate Central Market they are making it fresh in the produce department daily. It is expensive: $5 for a half-pint container, $9 for a pint, but is very tasty. They are unreliable, however, as to what time of day they have it out for purchase.

Is Uchi a must for West Coasters who already eat their weight in seafood?

Fonda San Miguel would be just fine for a group of gals! It's interior-mex rather than tex-mex, so you can eat there as well as a tex-mex place!

As far as quantity at Uchi, I'm usually there as one of a group of four persons, and it seems like generally each dish or roll provides two bites/portions for each of the four of us. We usually order about five dishes, I think, for the four of us. You may have a two hour wait.

Tacos, Migas, and Tex-Mex: Help Me ID These Restaurants

Hi, Mark. I don't think that you need to make that distinction based on what you've read here. There are lots of posts about favorite tacos which aren't even from traditional restaurants, rather they are from taco carts/trailers. Migas are available at many types of restaurants here in addition to Mexican and Tex-Mex.

If you are a big fan of tacos, I recommend one meal at either Tacodeli or Torchy's because both places have many, many choices and are consistently good. Tacos are their specialty.

If you eat at Polvo's, ask for Rob L. to be your server.

If you drive through Rockport at dinner time, check out Latitude 2802 for dinner. We've enjoyed their food for years. Your boyfriend could try their "Fish Gilroy." If you drive through Rockport in the morning, get some donuts at Donut Palace. (Don't laugh, they're my favorite!)

Who's got whoopie pies?

I made the Stonewall Kitchen pumpkin flavor whoopie pies (from mix) for my neighbor when she was under the weather. She is now addicted and can't stop talking about them. I've made the SK chocolate variety, too, and they're very good also.

Zoot, the new location

I ate at the new Zoot location last week also. I was disappointed that they've not done anything at all with the space interior design-wise. It's hard to go from the quaint building on Hearn to a generic strip mall space without feeling pretty let down!

Everyone in our party of four enjoyed his/her food. I had a fish fillet served with risotto made with spinach and mushrooms. It was very tasty. Our server was socially awkward and new to Zoot. He made weird comments about us bringing our own bottle of wine: assumed we had no idea about a corkage fee, asked us why we brought it and were we a part of a "wine club."

I've been a regular Zoot customer for many years, but may not be eating there much in the future given the charmless interior of their new space.

Grissini's in Kennebunkport, ME

The server bringing out two gnocchi is one of the funniest, yet appalling, things I've heard in a long while. I ate there in July or August, and our food was mediocre at best. Not helping it at all was the table of ten or so thirty-something women who were screeching and laughing throughout. The "ladies" drank some kind of shots together at the end of their meal at which time they screamed and cheered each other. Their husbands sat together at a nearby table and behaved in a civilized manner.

Best Pizza in Austin?

I agree with nyc_girl on Salvation Pizza. Every time I've had the white pie w/shrimp it has been fantastic: served piping hot, crispy crust and a great balance of flavors.

You should definitely add Tacodeli. It's a gem of a place on Spyglass at Barton Skyway. There is a north location also.

Good recs for Austin

Definitely try Vespaio or Enoteca Vespaio next door. After dinner cross the street and grab a cupcake from Hey Cupcake in airstream trailer! Downtown on Congress Ave. Manuel's is good for mexican food.
