Best place for New England Clam Chowder in Boston?

Union Oyster House has the best Clam Chowder. It is not a cheap bowl, and I am not sure how their other food fares, but stop in just for a bowl of soup! Plus, the restaurant is historic and in a great area for a day of visiting the city.

Good Place to Watch Playoffs in Waltham?

I agree with Bison County, they have plenty of TVs, and a good range of food to choose from. They have some good burgers, and the Bison burger is very good. (I agree with L Staff, the bone-in south carolina wings are the best.)
Unfortunalty there are not many options when it comes to pizza. There is an upper crust on Moody Street that has a TV and a small bar, but I would hardly call it a place to go to watch the game.

Favorite Suburban Italian Restaurant?

I agree and prefer Il Capriccio. The service there is so much better than Campania, and I have never had a bad dish.

Sorrelina vs. Grill 23

I was just at Sorrelina this week for my anniversary dinner. It was a great meal. The place is quiet, and has a very cool vibe to it. We had great service, and we did not order anything that wasn't delicious (and we ordered a ton of food). I highly reccomend it for a special occasion.

Suggestions for best prix-fixe mid-week dinner?

I went to a really good price fix dinner last night at Dante in Cambridge. It was $35, and yes a few specific items are additional costs, but the meal was really good. If the rain ever stops, it also has a very nice patio with a gorgeous view of the Charles.

Best outdoor seating outside of Boston (Cambridge, Newton, etc, anywhere that you can park)

Union Street Bar and Grill in Newton Center has a great outdoor patio and a huge menu. Its good classic bar food.

BBQ

I completely agree with the wings at Bison County. Just make sure they are not the boneless, but the bone-in south carolina wings.
And in general, the bbq at Blue Ribbon is my favorite. I have only been to the Newton location, it is small, but worth the trip.

Waltham outdoor tables for lunch?

Joe sent me has an outdoor patio in the back. It is on main street. New Landing on Moody has a back patio as well. Food is okay--not great. And the place is empty a lot (not sure how long it will last).

New to the Neighborhood: West Newton/Moody Street

Iguana is indeed closed, and it is now called the new landing. Pretty basic food, nothing great. Good bar scene though, and a nice patio in back during the summer time.

Tango Mango Waltham

Stopped in on Saturday. It was busy, which was a nice surprise. I think it is a good addition to Moody St, as there are mexican places, but no real quick joint like Anna's. I ordered the Spicy Chicken burrito, and it was good, a little too wet, but the flavors were good. I saw someone order a veggie burrito, and the vegetables looked really fresh. I might try that next time. All in all, i would give Tango Mango a B. Nothing fabulous, but good enough to grab a burrito if you have the craving.

Going to the North End Friday Night For Dinner. What's your favorite?

If you dont mind spending money, Prezza is the best.

New to the Neighborhood: West Newton/Moody Street

I have lived in waltham for 8 years now, here are some of my favorite places...

On Moody Street:
Bison County (great south carolina grilled wings) and good for a burger
Tom Can Cook (can look dead inside at times, but a large selection of food, and great for take out)
Lizzys (great ice cream)
Tempo (for a more upscale "trendy" place, they make really good food and good cocktails)

Off Moody Street
Pisanos--it is a mexican/guatamalan restaurant off the path that has really good margaritas, and very good food. Located on High Street. Stay away from Margaritas on Moody Street...overpriced, bad food.
Il Capriccio--for a fancy meal since it is pricey, but the best Italian in the area

Surprisingly there are a lot of great breakfast places in waltham. My favorite is In A Pickle on Main Street.

Enjoy!!

Help for dinner tonight

A friend just came in town, she is staying at the Westin in Copley. We are trying to find a place that has good drinks, good food for tonight. The problem is she is picky with her food. She really just eats meats, fish, veggies (a no carb no sugar person). So, I would like to try and place with options. Even a place with just good appetizers and drinks is good. Help would be appreciated since I really do not know that area well. Price range about 15-20 entrees. (can be a little more, but nothing super expensive.

sage vs. pigalle

I am looking for a restaurant to go to on a sunday evening, for a birthday celebration for me and my husband. I have narrowed it down to save or pigalle. We are interested in getting great food, for an affordable price, and I believe both places still do Sunday price fix menus, Does anyone know if these promo's are still running, and if so, which would recommend?

RW or otherwise - recommendations in Waltham

both are very good, and very different. Even though Tempo is not on the RW list posted, i know they are doing it since I am on their email list. Tempo is bistro, so they make really good meats, their duck is on the RW menu and it is really good! If you are in the mood for classic delicious Italian, you can not go wrong with La Campania, although I do not think they are doing RW.

Recs for Birthday

Hi.
I am trying to find a restaurant for my husbands birthday. We are looking to spend about $80 for the both of us (not including Drinks). We just went to Prezza and Eastern Standard this weekend, and absolutely loved Prezza, and thought Eastern Standard was good as well (not amazing, but very good). We were thinking about going to No. 9 park, but I think it is a little too expensive for this meal, and we are going to save it for our anniversary.
Food we like...neither of us are big into fish, typically go for steaks, duck, lamb, pastas or shellfish. We love the north end, really liked Bacco, Daily Catch, Giacomo's, and Carmen. We have not ventured around Boston too much for eating, so any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks.

Modern Pastry

I think this is one of the questions that everyone has their own favorites. Its based on not only taste, but what you grew up on. I personally really like Mikes...but, it is also the place that I went as a kid, so there is that familiar taste. I don't really get the cookies/brownies and such, I always go for the Lobster Claws, which are so amazing at Mike's. It is all about the cream in the middle and a fresh outside, and it is made perfectly there. But, I have never heard a bad review of Modern either!

Special Occasion Dinner

I will give a little chime in for Babbo. The food is great, and there are a few things on the menu that are unique, and are so tasty. I have not been to 11 MP, so I can not compare.

Tempo or La Campania

It is too difficult to compare the two, they are completely different places. Tempo is a younger croud, more "hip" with martini's and bright colors on the walls ext. If you are looking for a more "fun" place with good food, I would pick Tempo. If you are looking for a more relaxed, sit down fancy meal, La Campania is a better choice. IMO, I prefer Il Capriccio over La Campania. They are very similar and which is better depends on who you ask. I personally am an Il Capriccio fan. The food is more refined, more special and the service is 10 times better than La Campania. I have been to La Campania 3 times, and it was not until my third attempt that I finally got the food and service that everyone was raving about. The first time the food was not as good as I hoped, the second time the service was so awful we had to talk to the manager. Finally the last try was wonderful. (I am glad I gave it a few chances). Which ever you pick, all three are good meals!

cool lounge/restaurant in Cambridge/Boston/Waltham?

I have never been to the place you mention, but Tempo in waltham is a cool place. Has a good decor, great drinks, and food is very good.

Best ice cream cake

Lizzy's in waltham makes a very good ice cream cake, and it is all ice-cream with cookies or crunchies in the middle. Also, Cabots in Newtonville makes a very good ice cream cake.

Best Sweet Potato Fries

I am a big fan of the sweet potato fries at Bison County in Waltham on Moody street. The only annoying thing is if you get them as a side instead of the regular fries, they charge you an extra buck! I hate when places do that!

Where to eat in Waltham or Newton

I am actually not a huge fan of Biago. I have only been once though, and it was right when it opened so perhaps I should give it another try. I did not think it was that much less expensive that Il Capriccio or La Campania (maybe $10-20 total) and food wise not even comparable! My husband ordered a Fruti di Mar and it was not washed out properly and there was sand in his pasta! I have heard though that the upstairs patio is a lot of fun in the summer and the food up there is cheaper and better. Anyone know about this?

Where to eat in Waltham or Newton

I am a big fan of Il Capriccio. I think the food is more unique that La Campania, and I prefer the over-all ambiance. But, La Campania is a very small step lower, the food is still very good. I don't think either have killer prices, but of course it just depends on what you order. As TheTrout said, if you order expensive wine, and add on dessert and apps, it can add up quickly!

Good (and bad) Restaurant Week experiences

I have to agree with edgewater, i had a great experience with Olives. I have been to Olives in NYC and absolutely love it, and decided to try it in Boston during restaurant week. The menu is great since there are so many options. I have heard mixed reviews about Olives during the regular time though.

Sandwich Panic in Waltham

I have used Lena's before for a large catered event. There subs are good, and I like that they separate the veggies and the spreads so nothing gets soggy in the transport. I have never had catered subs from NY deli, but I think they make the best "basic" subs around (turkey, italian, ext). Someone mentioned Russo's, that could be a great idea. They use high quality meat, and the veggies are great. Just never have had catering from them, so not sure how it will be in transportation

Best "Red Sauce" Italian in the city?

For great Italian, I love Giacomo's. You can get there pastas with four different types of red sauces. The restaurant is small, and the waiters know how to get you in and out, but if you are not looking for a fancy sit-down meal, its a great place.

Last minute Valentine's dinner date - where to go?

Giacomo's and Daily Catch are both really great places. But, beware that even though they do not take reservations, there still could be very long lines outside. They will just have to be willing to hang out outside and wait.

Any suggestions for an an informal biz dinner in Waltham ?

I think that Tapas are great, and yes, a good chance to eat lots of different plates and food. For me, Solea is pricey for the quality. I have been to other great tapas restaurants in Boston for the same price, if not even more expensive, but the quality of the food is better. I just don't think Solea is worth the price considering they are not the best tapas I have had.

Any suggestions for an an informal biz dinner in Waltham ?

I would not suggest Solea. Food is okay at best, and mostly it is over priced for the size of the portions. You end up ordering a lot of little plates that add up very quickly.
I have not been to Tuscan Grill, but have heard the food is hit or miss, and the service is not very good.
Tempo is a great spot. Lots of good fish options (if the vegetarians eat fish). I also agree that Elephant Walk is very good.
