Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto
IMHO, they are **fabulous**!! In fact, I was in BB over the weekend and came home with a 6-pack of them! They are huge, quite runny, and have lemon zest in the pastry and in the filling. I'd suggest you try if you get the chance!
Butcher in London, Ontario
Sullivan's meats at Maitland and Cheapside - beautiful and locally sourced meats. Have been at that location for 80+years.
ONTARIO Beers worth trying
Just visited the Railway City store - although the customer service leaves *much* to be desired, the beer is great! I love the Copper Ale (slightly similar to Neustadt's 10W30) and we have yet to try the seasonal Cranberry Ale.
ONTARIO Beers worth trying
Fantastic beer! Available from the LCBO (in some places) as well as from the brewery store.
Spiced Nuts
Hi,
I went looking for a spiced nut recipe and found a great sugar and spice nut recipe on the Smitten Kitchen Food Blog:
http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/12/sugar-and-spice-candied-nuts/
I tried it and they were easy to make. I served them at a party we held and we disappeared. I had a few leftover and I gobbled them up. I am making more tonight to bring to my parents on the weekend.
FYI - I did as she suggested and added a bit more salt and I think I upped the cayenne too.
Enjoy!
Italian Tipo 00 Flour & London, Ontario
This is just a thought, but Jill's Table on King St. (downtown) has many "hard to find" or "gourmet" foodstuffs. I don't know if they carry that flour, but Jill or other staff might be able to help you.
Good luck!
Port Stanley options?
I enjoy ME and Suzie's. It is pretty casual, it has a nice patio, and the food that I have had was quite good. The emphasis is on local-grown as well.

If you want really, really, really casual you can't beat Mackie's fries, located right on the beach!
Garlic scapes, what prep besides pesto?
I use scapes to create a bed for baking salmon. And then eat them. Or placed in a roasting pan with a beef roast. Eat them chopped into salad. Anywhere where I would put garlic and /or onions, I would consider replacing with scapes.
Also, they keep so long in the fridge that you can use them all summer long.
Big Apple (Colborne) Report
I have not been to the theme park, but have eaten the pie. A friend purchased one for take-away and was raving about it. We had said pie for dessert and it was nothing to rave about. I would and I will avoid.
And FYI - they seem to have opened an outlet on Hwy 11.
Suggestions for Huntsville
Visited the Westside Diner last weekend. It seems to be very popular with the locals. Decor is homey but most importantly, the food was tasty. Halibut fish and chips was excellent. Lemon meringue pie was good, not great. I should have selected the chocolate pie (can't recall what they call it) but couldn't eat it due to dairy.
Will make this a yearly destination for fish and chips! Thanks for the rec!
Suggestions for Huntsville
Hey there,
Pass on 3 Guys. I think it was good some time ago (in a past life??!), but it has expired. Ended up eating there a couple of weeks ago because I wanted to give it one last try, anyways. Absolutely unremarkable. The chef also screwed up my order - included raisins in a pasta dish instead of beans and I pointed it out - at the end of the meal as it took me awhile to figure it out. The manager said she'd take it off the bill, but then didn't. Whatever. I won't be back. Ever.
I will root for the Butcher's Daughter. Damn good sandwiches there. Hands down. Would have eaten there if it was open. I noticed that their food products (honey; jam; dried pasta etc) seem to be pricey, but I didn't think our lunch was.
I've eaten at Aroma mostly when I want a liquid lunch. :) I am in Huntsville to visit my in-laws. Although I have eaten dinner there once - 2 summers ago?? I vaguely recall being pleased and full. And at that time they offered a flight of 3 wines, which is lovely in my estimation.
Have fun!
Recommendations for dining in the Ottawa Valley (Pembroke, Renfrew, Arnprior, etc)
I can attest to the scenery. Beautiful. (It's been years since I've eaten there; when it was Golden Sands??).

The chelsea buns at the grocery in Killaloe aren't so bad either. Yum.

No worries.
If you like buttertarts, they are really good at the general store in Palmer Rapids. I think there is one general store in the town, so it's not hard to find. (Not the best I've every had, but good).

I'm not much help, but here are some places to consider:
My parents love The Granary in Eganville. I have memories of it from when I was younger and it was pretty tasty. But I personally have no idea if it still stands up:

I have had the pierogies (and the homemade mustard, but not together) from The Wilno Tavern and they are fabulous. Apparently much of the food is really tasty.

NOTL very recently?
Hi there.
I have appreciated much advice from the conversations here in the past, so thank you. I am heading to NOTL in a couple of weeks and am trying to decide between the Hillebrand or Peller restaurants. I have read threads here (and other places) but am getting very mixed reviews from each. Has anyone been to either place recently (since the summertime, perhaps) and has an opinion they care to share?
Much appreciated!
