Best Steak Tartare in city

I've enjoyed the steak tartare at Patroon in the past, althought it's probably been more than a year since I've been there.

Restaurants With Piano

Millesime is another that has live music, although not always a pianist.

Recos needed for father-daughter arriving by tall ship

Excellent ideas, thanks. I've never heard of/been to Chinatown Ice Cream Factory and it looks like a good walk from the seaport.

London Chowhound's NYC itinery - help needed!

+ on BBQ. An evening at Jazz Standard means food from Blue Smoke plus jazz. That might meet the request for "good atmosphere and energy." The June calendar isn't posted yet, but you can check at http://jazzstandard.net/red/index.htm

Recos needed for father-daughter arriving by tall ship

My brother and his 8-year old daughter are arriving on a tall ship this weekend. After several weeks at sea, they will be very casually dressed, scruffy even -- jeans, flip-flops, t-shirts. Looking for some fun ideas for lunches and dinners while avoiding chains. Niece is reasonably unfussy eater for her age; brother doesn't eat red meat and likes microbrews. Restaurants with a view or unique, NY feel would be great.

Ship will be moored at Governor's Island, so they'll always start out at South Ferry or Bowling Green subway stations, but I'll be showing them around Manhattan so suggestions as far uptown as Central Park/Museum of Natural History would be good.

Coffee shop with seating in Grand Central Terminal

I'm fairly certain you're thinking of Cucina & Co, which shares the lobby with Cafe Centro and Naples 45. At the top of the escalators from Grand Central. They do serve breakfast, and in my experience it's quieter than Pershing Square. Also going in the right direction toward your meeting.

Suggestions near East 50th and Lex - not too $$$$

I like Le Bateau Ivre, but it's quite small with tables close together, so may not be suitable for your "executive board."

Suggestions near East 50th and Lex - not too $$$$

Some suggestions that I've enjoyed for business dinners in the area (all are $$$ in OpenTable instead of $$$$ for Aquavit).
Pampano
Cafe Centro
Fabio Piccolo Fiore

and also Chin Chin, but I haven't been there in a few years and don't know how it's holding up.

Wedding Reception for 150 in Manhattan . . . Suggestions Desperately needed

I attended a rehearsal dinner a couple of years ago at 3 West Club. We were in the Solarium -- both inside and outside on a terrace overlooking Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick's. There was live musicand I recall that the food was good. Quick look at their web site shows capacity for a dinner-dance is 150.

Best Greek

Avra Estiatorio - East 48th. Great charcoal-grilled fish.

Beautiful/scenic restaurant for post wedding dinner in Manhattan in May ?

A possibility would be the Bryant Park Grill. It's behind the New York Public Library (Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street) overlooking Bryant Park. Not a favorite of Chowhounders for food, but meets your requirements for view, and cuisine. And it's a big place that should have no trouble with your group size.

There's also The Top of the Tower in the Beekman Hotel. But it must have been more than 10 years since I've been there -- maybe someone else has?

Good place to get a pre-dinner drink near Per Se?

I would simply go early to Per Se. The last time I ate there, my date was very late (coming straight from the airport). I sat in their lounge on a sofa with a lovely view of the park, and had a special seasonal cocktail.

NYC resto where you help prepare your dinner (cooking demo) before eating?

I'm not aware of any restaurants that do this, but I have been to private events at The Institute for Culinary Education and thought they were great. Lots of information on their website:

Need dinner place near 40th and Park

Rare Burger

Dinner reco - midtown west - Madison to 7th Aves, between 50 - 40 Sts

Another possibility is Cafe Un Dex Trois, a staple in the theater district. The Picky One could get a burger there.

Looking for unique NYC place to host cocktail party for 30-35 ppl

I went to an event of about that size last year at the Andaz Hotel near the NY Public Library. It felt more like a fabulous apartment than a commercial venue -- open kitchen, lounge area, big windows, and an outdoor courtyard which should be terrific in the spring. The food was great.
Don't be put off by the Hyatt association; it feels like a boutique hotel, not a chain at all.

A Saturday lunch near Sotheby's

I'm asking on behalf of a group of 5-6 women making a day trip from D.C. for an exhibition at Sotheby's (York at 71st) in a couple of weeks. Any suggestions for a nice lunch in that area? Something better/more interesting than a pizza place, sandwich shop or coffee shop, but still fairly casual and moderately priced.

For example, if this was midtown, I might recommend Cibo, Fig & Olive, Hillstone.

Venue for cocktail party for 40-50 ppl

I went to a cocktail party at Zengo. Cool private space, good Latin-Asian appetizers. They have a set of private event options with prices posted. You could have an open bar and appetizers for $70 per person for two hours. We didn't dance, so don't know if that's a possibility.

Suggestions for Steak besides Keens??

If you like steak with a French rather than American touch, I recommend Artisanal. They have several steak-frites combinations, and, if you want to splurge, the Côte De Boeuf Pour Deux is wonderful. And I can never resist an order of gougères.

Dinner for 15 or so Midtown, midpriced

I like Pera (Madison at 42nd) for Mediterranean food. Great for sharing small plates. They have a new "boundless BBQ dinner" on weekends which I have been wanting to try -- might be great for your group, if you can get a reservation for that many people. $29 per person, served family-style. Menu is posted here: http://www.peranyc.com/pdf/weekend-dinner-menu.pdf

Moderate priced Murray Hill area French or Italian

I second Artisanal. Another possibility for French at a somewhat lower price point is Le Parisien on E 33rd.

Recruiting dinner (expensed)

I would not recommend either Annisa or Corton in this case, although I adore Annisa and like Corton. Both have quiet, formal rooms that just don't seem suitable for 10-year olds.

1. Place to take nieces near Rockerfeller Center and 2. where to send friends for great Italian in Little Italy?

How about Cafe SFA in Saks? When I was a child it was always a special treat when my grandmother took me to a "ladies who lunch" sort of place in a department store.
Another optioin is The Sea Grill -- isn't fun, exactly, but does have that great view of the ice skating rink.

Breakfast on Monday in Midtown

Pershing Square (on 42nd Street under the viaduct across the street from Grand Central) serves a very good breakfast (a la carte, not buffet). Busy, too, so I recommend a reservation.

Please help me pick a restaurant for a 40th birthday celebration - private room

Agree about the BLT's. I've been to both BLT Fish and BLT Steak for corporate functions, and while they are fine for that purpose, and the service was excellent, the food wasn't particularly imaginative or memorable (except for the popovers!).
