OC BBQ Festival June 12 at OC Fairgrounds - Review from Past Years' Attendees?

Haven't been, but sounds interesting, primarily in that KC BBQ Society is judging the competitive cookoff portion. Anyone want to weigh in? Any must-taste competitors? Thanks.

ISO Non chain restaurant near Disneyland. ( for breakfast)

I will continue the trend and recommend it, but not all the things you like from the menu are in fact served at breakfast. Breakfast menu is a bit more standard. Eggs, corned beef, sausages, breads, etc.

Great knife skills class in LA, preferably Eastside?

Hijack: Exact same question for OC, anyone?

Business Breakfast Disneyland-Adjacent Weekday

Thanks Servorg, haven't been!

Business Breakfast Disneyland-Adjacent Weekday

I did a search and got back 6 pages of results but not the one that hits home. So...anyone have an idea for a business-setting breakfast (casual decor fine, however) that is not a coffee shop or a kid-based restaurant as close to Disneyland as possible without actually being IN Disneyland, and preferably with valet or ample parking? Thanks!

Is it me or this site is slow?

A month later, it's still slow, though not terminally so. And foodnetwork is by far the slowest site in the english language world, which is so annoying that I have nearly stopped using it.

Red Lobster Endless Shrimp - Anyone?

So...I've never been to a Red Lobster, and I'm sure the shrimp are frozen and farm-raised, etc. but I do like eating lots of things in one sitting. So, has anyone who appreciates the best of what Chow boards believes in been to Red Lobster and specifically for the shrimp promotion? Worth a try? Any of the choices much better than another? Thanks.

Gelato: any new great places in Orange County?

Not sure about new, since it's not, but like Gelato Paradiso in Dana Point (and I believe they have a few other locations).

SLO Sunday Breakfast

Thank you Bruce and Nancy! Sorry I can't help mliew.

Oakbrook (Oak Brook) Shopping Center - Super Specific for the Locals

That's a lovely sounding menu, thank you. Bone in filet is one of my favorites, best I've ever had was near you, at Joe's in Chicago (Downtown, I believe).

SOC Chinese

That IS exciting - thank you. Next on my list.

Oakbrook (Oak Brook) Shopping Center - Super Specific for the Locals

Oh bourj, where were you in April? :)
So - thank you to everyone who responded and I did in fact wind up at the Reel Club, for the first and last time. The place is perfectly pleasant and the food is bland and average at best. Soup, Wedge, Grilled Fish, Mixed Drink - nothing inspiring, nothing even flavorful. In short, overpriced and disappointing, though not "bad". I'll have to try "out of but near mall" next time.

Downey Business Meeting

Thank you attran99, belatedly. I appreciate the reply, and will definitely be using these ideas for my own meals in Downey in the future, having been to none of them previously. If you see this and feel like it, I'd be happy to have a few links to your much better Cerritos suggestions!

SLO Sunday Breakfast

Board search by this OCer doesn't find the specific recommendation I need: Sunday breakfast in SLO. Any help from the locals or fellow travelers appreciated!

SOC Chinese

Yes, I prefer to drive to San Gabriel, or even Irvine/Tustin/Santa Ana, but for the beach-close communities of South OC there is not that much choice. Any suggestions?

I'll go first. I am pleased to say that my third visit to China Moon in L.N. was as good as the first two. Decent beef chow fun, very well flavored Hunan Spicy Lamb. Tea is $0.55/pp, extra white rice is a dollar, no attitude, big menu, decent lunch specials (weekdays only), never a wait, up-front parking.

ISO of the best potato salad

Gadflier's Warm Mustard Vinegar Mayo Creamy Amazing Potato Salad:

1. Use a mix of starchy potatoes - the 3 colored (red, white, purple) net-bag at a famous local supermarket chain is a great choice.
2. Boil the potatoes unpeeled in salted water, and cook to soft, not to "just done.:
3. Pre-mix the wet ingredients in a glass bowl while the potatoes are boiling so they can meld their flavors:

3 parts mayo to one part sour cream
Equal amount of grain mustard (not dijon) as to sour cream
2 capfuls white balsamic vinegar - mandatory ingredient
2 scallions diced fine
1/2 red onion chopped
Dash of worchestire
Salt, pepper to taste; try white pepper
Heaping T of dry tarragon or better yet fresh tarragon, dill or cilantro, but just one of them

Optional to your taste, but absolutely not necessary for any of these:
One or two roughly chopped hard boiled eggs
One or two diced small sweet pickles
3 strips of crumbled strip bacon
Paprikia or chili powder, but not hot sauce

Add the potoates hot, you need not peel them, and either smash them in the bowl or be a real chef and peel them and chop them immediately; do not let the potatoes cool for this version.

Add a few T of the cooking water, mix thoroughly but gently, and serve immediately!

There's a solid place for olives, and pickles, and their juices, and for heat, but not in this one. Let the vinegar and mustard and the one green herb shine through instead.

The beauty of potato salad is that there are an infinite number of choices. Enjoy, and I look forward to trying some of the other ones here soon.

Oakbrook (Oak Brook) Shopping Center - Super Specific for the Locals

I am awed by the specificity and completeness of these responses, thank you.

Oakbrook (Oak Brook) Shopping Center - Super Specific for the Locals

The quest: Single best dinner choice based on food alone, type and price of food irrelevant, that is in, beside or next to the Oakbrook Shopping Center for a guest at the Marriott without a car please?

I'm familiar from other cities with the chains represented in the center, such as Cheesecake Factory, Maggianos, CPK, but don't know about Wildfire, Braxton Seafood Grill, Baisi Thai, Clubhouse, Mon Ami Gabi, Antico Posto, Mike Ditkas, and whatever else I'm missing.

I've searched each of these names, and gotten a few mixed reviews, which of course is to be expected, but most of them sound like another chain I know: Houstons, and that some of them are in fact regional mini-chains.

As an aside, for the real locals, if there's a better choice not in the shopping center but equidistant (about 3 miles) to the hotel, that's fine of course.

Thanks so much for your time and suggestion.

Fire in Orange County?

Seeking request of restaurants or coffee shops from Irvine, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach or anywhere in south OC that focus on fire as part of the aesthetic. Big oven as part of the visibile kitchen; hearth outside; etc. If I was in Santa Monica I would just go to Coffee Bean on Wilshire and sit around their big gas fire outside. Anything like that? THANKS.

Ultimate OC Restaurants, 2007 Edition

I tried for South/Central OC 08 best of earlier, but without success. No love for the OC here. There is another website that does have lots of OC reviews that I am aware of though....the postings aren't nearly as thoughtful, but they are numerous.
