Carrollton Foodie's Profile
Pea shoots
Sorry I didn't check in sooner :( When I've seen pea shoots at H Mart they've always been very wilty. Much better at Carrollton Plaza.
Pea shoots
Sorry for the late response. I haven't checked in here in a while. Carrollton Plaza Supermarket in Carrollton often has pea shoots, and theirs are very fresh unlike some other places where I've seen them. They had them when I was there last Friday. Carrollton Plaza is at the southeast corner of Frankford and Josey.
Which Dallas Seafood Market, Rex's or T.J.'s?
Yeah, I sure opened a kettle of fish, didn't I? I appreciate everyone's input. In response to Scagnetti, I know it's not everyone's thing, but hubby and I really enjoy salting our own bacalao, curing our own corned beef, smoking our own salmon and bacon, etc. It's nice to have control over the seasonings and quality of ingredients and we just really enjoy making things from scratch that people normally buy. Cooking is my creative passion!
Which Dallas Seafood Market, Rex's or T.J.'s?
Agreed. I want to be an informed consumer.
Which Dallas Seafood Market, Rex's or T.J.'s?
Thanks for all the info. Cod seems so common that I never thought about it possibly being an unsustainable fish. Looks like I have some research to do.
Which Dallas Seafood Market, Rex's or T.J.'s?
I plan to go to either Rex's or T.J.'s for the first time this weekend for seafood, specifically looking for good fresh cod to make bacalao (dried cod). Will probably get some shrimp or crab as well. Can anyone recommend which one has the best quality/price?
Late Lunch, Tuesday, Downtown Dallas Area - Thinking Bolsa
Hubby and I love Bolsa. It's kid friendly and even pet friendly. If you go, try the butternut squash soup if they have it.
Uncured green olives
I know, right? I do most of my shopping at "ethnic" markets because they have better ingredients at better prices.
Chocolates in Dallas
I grew up with Katherine Clapner back in the day when she was just Kathy Clapner. We lived in the same neighborhood and I remember my mother driving both of us to extracurricular school events. I was so excited recently to read about her chocolate/business success. Hubby and I have been to Dude Sweet twice now and have "spent our allowance" on her amazing confections. I'm one of those weird chicks who couldn't care less about chocolate and I definitely don't care much for dark chocolate, but something about her creative spin on chocolate is really addictive. You've got to try her creations. Amazing stuff!
New Denton restaurants
LH, do you know if El Portal has closed? I was looking for it recently where I thought it was located, at the SW corner of Trinity Mills and Marsh, but couldn't find it.
Uncured green olives
I saw them a week ago at the Fiesta in Irving at the NW corner of Airport Freeway (183) and MacArthur. I haven't seen them there before. Sorry I didn't post sooner, just came across this thread.
Any recommendations for a Moroccan restaurant in the Dallas area?
Thanks for the recs!
Any recommendations for a Moroccan restaurant in the Dallas area?
I'm in Carrollton and looking for recommendations for an authentic Moroccan restaurant anywhere in the area. Marrakesh was recommended to me long ago by a Moroccan immigrant, but unfortunately I didn't make it there before they closed. I'm looking for authentic, not flashy.
Good eats near Worthington Rennaisance Hotel-- Fort Worth
For great cheap burgers and some crazy people-watching, Love Shack north of downtown in the stockyards http://www.loveburgershack.com/. They also have a So 7 location west of downtown nearer to the museum district. A Ft. Worth institution and inexpensive dining must is Joe T. Garcia's, also north of downtown in the stockyards area http://www.joets.com/. Be sure to sit on the patio. Also be sure to bring cash; that's all they accept.
[DFW]99 Ranch Market is Coming to Plano!
Haven't tried their beef yet, but we've now tried their fish and pork. We made ceviche with their Basa and it was fabulous. We've purchased pork belly there several times to make our home-smoked bacon. Eventually when we get our technique just right, I'd like to find a source for really high-end pork belly, but for now the prices at 99 Ranch can't be beat.
Butcher Salt
I got mine at Carnival. It was on a bottom shelf in the produce section.
Superbowl weekend
The Sundance Square area in Fort Worth http://www.sundancesquare.com/ will be hopping throughout the Super Bowl festivities. ESPN is doing its broadcasting from there and it's a fun place even when nothing special is going on. It's probably about 20 minutes WITHOUT TRAFFIC from Arlington. There are lots of restaurants and bars there. Reata Restaurant http://www.reata.net/ would provide a nice Texana experience for out-of-towners.
Looking for pho in Carrollton/Addison (and Thai too)
I like Pho Express, 2012 E Belt Line Rd. It's on the south side of Belt Line a little east of Josey. If you're a Carrollton long-timer you'll remember this location as the old Cici's pizza before Cici's moved into the old Pancho's location ... but I digress. I can't tell you if the food is authentic, because every place I've had pho it's had distinct differences. I like their pho and their rolls. The accompaniments to the soup, cilantro, bean sprouts, etc., are fresh and crisp, which isn't always the case at pho places. I also like that when my son and I used to go there regularly, they remembered our regular order as soon as we walked in the door.
Khao Soi--Chiang Mai Noodle Soup
Carrollton Plaza Supermarket, a primarily Vietnamese market at the southeast corner of Josey Lane and Frankford Road in Carrollton, often, although not always, has kaffir lime leaves.
Help finding the right restaurant
Wherever you decide to go, when you make the reservation mention how interested your daughter is in cooking and what an important event this is for her. Sometimes chefs and restaurant staff are excited about a young person's passion for the culinary arts and perhaps the chef might come by your table to say hello to her. Most fine dining establishments are used to helping their patrons celebrate special occasions and helping to make the celebrations more festive. This definitely qualifies :)
Never been to Ft. Worth before: what can't I miss? (with a limitation)
I won't get into the debate about the pros and cons of Joe T's, but if you go you must sit outside. The weather in October should be perfection for al fresco dining and their patio is gorgeous.
Where can I find Gochujang?
Yep, the fabulous Super H Mart in Carrollton, northwest corner Bush Turnpike and Old Denton Road, has a good selection of gochujang. I'm so lucky to live in the Metroplex's newest ethnic food mecca :)
p.s. In addition to using it in Korean recipes, gochujang is a great marinade for beef skirt or flank steak for the grill, yummy!
[DFW]99 Ranch Market is Coming to Plano!
We went to 99 Ranch Market last Saturday and I really like this place. I'll be putting it in my once or twice a month rotation. The prices on many things there were fantastic. They seemed to have a great selection of meat/poultry/fish. Since I was with my hubby, a/k/a the power shopper, I didn't get to linger and label-read too much, but look forward to going back and having a leisurely stroll through the aisles. The place is sparkling clean and fresh-smelling. We live really close to H-Mart, so 99 Ranch won't be our primary Asian market. H-Mart is also impeccably clean and has great prices. My quick initial impression is that 99 Ranch has slightly lower overall prices on meat/poultry/fish and that H-Mart has slightly lower overall prices on produce. One strength that H-Mart has that I don't think 99 Ranch has is that they carry almost everything you could need, normal American staples and lots of ethnic ingredients besides Asian. After a trip to H-Mart you normally don't need to visit an American grocery to pick up staples. I can't wait to visit 99 Ranch again. I want to try some of the interesting things that I've never seen anywhere else, like the Silkie chicken.
Favorite Restaurants in Bishop Arts District
Eno's Pizza for great pizza, fantastic service (they're amazingly kid-friendly too), and live music on I think Friday and Saturday nights; check that out to be sure if you're going for the music. Vera Cruz for a nice, tasty departure from Tex Mex, and a stunningly beautiful restaurant with gorgeous art. Vitto Italian has an extensive menu, friendly service, and better-than-average Italian food. Bolsa, down the street from Bisop Arts, is just an amazing place. That's the only way to describe it. Fresh, local, organic, creative. I can't wait to try out more Bishop Arts eats.

Thoughts on Lonsome Dove Bistro?
Oh, yeah, Lonesome Dove is so worth a visit; it's a great place for any "foodie" to dine when in Fort Worth. We've been to Love Shack, Lonesome Dove, and So 7, and Chef Tim Love truly is worthy of the hype. His interpretation of classic food with a Texas twist at Lonesome Dove is fantastic and the attention to detail on the burgers at Love Shack and So 7 makes them a thing of beauty.
[DFW] Cowboys BBQ and Ribs
Sad but true, I haven't found any barbecue in DFW worth the trip or the price. Nothing I've had at any BBQ joint can even compare with the smoky magic that my husband the grillmeister creates in our own back yard. It's a shame because sometimes you want a spur-of-the-moment place to enjoy some good BBQ without doing all the work. We hear so much about the great Hill Country BBQ places in Texas. I wish a restaurant closer to home would take the same pride in all the details to produce great BBQ.
fort worth: the LOVE SHACK
My husband and I really like both Love Shack and So 7. We've visited each one a couple of times. The dirty love burgers and fried onions are my favorite. Not positive, but I think they make their own pickles for the burgers.
The atmosphere is very different at the two locations. The Stockyards spot is a great place for people watching; drunk tourists, bikers, and cowboys are most entertaining. The So 7 spot is very light-hearted. We took our daughters to the So 7 location and they really enjoyed it, with the chalk and live music and getting to pet the doggies that were there, and of course they liked the milkshakes. I'm sure both locations would welcome children, but So 7 is very G-rated and kid friendly.
Hummus/Falafel in DFW area?
If you don't find the hummus you're looking for at a restaurant, I have a recipe for homemade hummus that's really yummy and easy to make. Post if you want the recipe. Good luck with your hummus/falafel quest.
