General Recommendations in Wake Forest, NC

Farm Table is an excellent choice. The portions are smaller than most other places but the quality of dishes is excellent. It is my new favorite

RDU to Wilmington - anything Chow-worthy along the way?

Most places are southern/country cooking after you get out of Raleigh, here are the ones that I know to be good but they are not going to great.

Meadow Village Restaurant a country buffet that is good but the star is the desserts.

Country Squire in Kenansville,

Country Kitchen in Wallace exit 385 yet another country buffet

Holland Shelter fish camp a true NC fish camp experience can't remember exit number just know where to turn by memory

Pauls Place hot dogs very well known but it is not my style

Downtown Raleigh - Good Food and Basketball on TV?

The Jimmy v's Osteria has some good spots to watch a game, however I cannot vouch for the food. Very convenient to where you are located.

Cafe Soo in Raleigh

I stopped in for some soy garlic chicken and it was good as always. I asked about the grill and the lady indicated that the grilling would be done in the kitchen, no grills in the dining area which I imagine means the kitchen cooks do grilling and none by customers

Need a good pre-race restaurant in Raleigh

Casa Carbone on Glenwood Ave is an old school Italian place, not the best Italian food in town but very reasonable and would be good for getting lots of pasta and red gravy

Cafe Soo in Raleigh

I tried Soo Café after reading many favorable reviews and the Fried chicken did not disappoint. The bad news is that a hotel is getting ready to be built on the site of their current location. The good news is that they have location plans and I think it is a much better spot than where they are currently. They will be moving to the Stonybrook Shopping Center on Capital Blvd. That will open up the place for many new customers and be more convenient for many more returning ones.

Raleigh suggestions needed (commercial strip)

Sawasdee for Thai going north on Capital is pretty good and you have an easy straight shot to downtown. Could try Pooles diner or Beasley's chicken or any of the Gravy or sitti type places

Ed Mitchell Opening a BBQ restaurant in Durham this Fall

My last two trips to Backyard have been very disappointing, the quality seems to have really fallen off with the BBQ. I made a trip to the Johnsons Family spot and was very impressed with the BBQ, the internet stuff is very petty all the way around, but I am going to keep returning.

BBQ Between Richmond, VA and Raleigh Durham?

The easiest suggestion without going to far out of the way is to take 95 to Wilson and stop in a Parker's

Chapel Hill, NC for long weekend BBQ suggestions?

Because of the question that started this thread, I am going to weigh in on the BBQ Pit in Durham. This had been on my go to BBq places for awhile, however on my last two trips I have been very disappointed with the BBQ. It definately did not taste like it had been pit cooked over wood like in the past, my perception is that it is being roasted in an oven. Somedays Q can be off but this change is to dramatic, I would love to hear if anyone else has experienced this. The sides are still solid but I use to go for the Q and probably will not risk a third failed trip.

New in Wakefield/Wake Forest?

Girasole is solid not spectacular but probably the best overall experience in Wake Forest. Next to that is the Fire Pit which is pretty much the same as the Q Shack. Brunos in Wakefield area is the nicest in the area and food is good. The newest option is the Fig Wine Bar on South Main Street close to the 98 bypass. Heard it is pretty good, limited menu might be a good chance to share a review here.

I sugggest cooking your grits with at least of the liquid being cream. Also, do use the sharp white cheddar.

Blue Bell ice cream now in Raleigh/Cary

Lumpy's now has a Wake Forest storefront in downtown Wake Forest. Some excellent flavors. You ca dipped cones or take home pints.
I was so looking forward to the arrival of Blue Bell but the vanilla is not on par with Ben and Jerrys, Haegen Daas or even Lumpy's. I will keep reserving final judgement unitl I get the Banana Pudding flavor wihich might be a good sub for those incredible Chic fil a Banana Puddding milshakes.

Wake Forest, NC BBQ tour

My third stop on the local tour was Big Al's BBQ located at 401 and Forestville. Very nice people and restaurant. I had the chopped Q and ribs. The pork was good with hints of smoke but not to much, but they drenched the meat in a ketchup based sauce so the meat was hard to distinguish. I enjoy most styles of BBQ but most purist will not like their chopped plate sauced. I asked what style the ribs were and the counter person described them as baby back but they were more of a St Louis cut or a spare rib. They were above average and a little fattier than I prefer but all pigs are different so can't complain about that. Sides were solid with the field peas being my favorite, and they advertised corn sticks as being new so I tried those. Probably overcooked and not Parker's but would go good with some Brunswick Stew. A nice solid place but nothing that stands out. 6 hooves as a final grade.

Wake Forest, NC BBQ tour

I sampled the BBQ platter at the Carolina Smokehouse Grille, the results are just so so. The menu is all over the place so I am not quite sure if they are focusing so much on the BBQ. The meat had some smoke flavoring to it but not much, the sauce was mostly a standard out of the bottle BBQ sauce from a store shelf with some vinegar added. My sides were baked beans and cheese grits. The grits were good the beans not bad not something I would reorder. Husphpuppies were ok but overcooked, probably would be ok if not burnt. I would give them 5 hooves out of 10.

The other two are Carolina Smokehouse Grille and Big Al's BBQ. N & O had a recent review of Carolina Smokehouse Grille. The Firepit is located off Heritage Lakes Rd. close to the two George Bakatsias restaurants, the Firepit looks like he desgined it but not sure if he has any role in it.

Wake Forest, NC BBQ tour

My first visit was to the one I was waiting to open up for months, the Firepit BBQ. The interior is similiar to that of the Q Shacks but a little more upscale with a nice bar. I found the Q to be very similiar to that of the Q shack as well, the brisket was very good and had the good smoke flavor and the outside bark that I personally enjoy. The pull pork was good but I prefer a nice chop to mine and this was pulled and stringy but still a nice smoke taste. Side were pintos and limas and they were good but portion very small and I was disappointed that it only came with 1 hushpuppy because it was very good. I am going to give it 7 hooves and I will be back to see how things change as they are open longer and make adjustments.

Looking for foodie restaurants in historic Charleston

Although is is in Mt. Pleasant, I have heard two first hand glowing reviews of Opal. Anyone on here been, is it worth going over Bridge for?

Dinner this Friday in or around Wake Forrest

Girasole would be might top recommendation. Good prices for good food. It is not going to blow you away but it is the best option. Bruno's is very good in the close by Wakefield area but is hard to get a table and the price is steep for the food you receive. I doubt it is still open but do not try GiGi's in Youngsville, very disappointing experience.

NC farm dinners, fire dept bbqs, chili/stew cookoffs, creek oyster festivals, fish frys, etc. thread

For those who are in the Wake Forest area, WF Methodist church is having a Brunswick Stew sale today, it is located at the corner of Hwy 98 (the new bypass) and South Main St. I usually stop at these when I see them or read about them. I stopped today and I have to give it a very high rating, the stew is very good with lots of vegs and meat, the sauce might need just a slight more flavor but this is good. The great thing is the huspuppies they are serving, they are GREAT. You can eat in and have a bowl of stew, hushpuppies and drink for 5.00, a quart is 7.00. if you carry it out . Not a member of the church but this is a very solid stew sale. Last until 7:00 pm

bbq near wallace, nc

If you go through Wilmington then the only respectable BBQ I have found is Jackson's Big Oak BBQ. I cannot recall any BBQ on the way to Myrtle Beach. What I am going to suggest is to leave River Landing , et on Hwy 41 and go to Elizabethown to the Back Porch restaurant. Family style country cooking. Fron there you can take 701 right to Hwy 22 and into NMB.
