The best place to buy vegetable seeds?
Hello folks! I know this post is not really about food, but more the beginning of food. So anyway... Does anyone know the best place to buy vegetable and herb seeds in Manhattan or Brooklyn? I am looking for interesting and heirloom seeds.

Salads - What Combinations are You Using These Days?
Grains and more grains.. Wheat berrys, farro, brown rice, these can take a while to cook so I cook a lot and freeze them. I eat salads most days for lunch and dinner and need to keep them somewhat interesting. I add chopped olives, Bulgarian feta, grated carrots etc... One of the green market vendors sells pea shoots and sunflower shoots and they add a nice crunch and oomph to salad. There is also always a protein, chicken (grilled marinated, chili powder), pork strips or maybe beef. If I am really desperate for time I add a good quality delis meat or a can of tuna. all of this on mixed greens (red, green , mizuna, baby lettuces etc..) and a few chunks of iceberg to keep it crispy.
Cookbook 101: List Some Fundamental Cookbooks (Suggestions Needed)
I think it is always good to have a book of defintions and descriptions such as 'The Chef's Companion" and maybe Harold Mcgee's 'On food and Cooking". Not really cookbooks but entertaining and helpful.

Recommended size for cutting board/block
Hello!
I bought my end grain 12x16x2 cutting board on etsy.com. It is grooved one side and flat on the other. The craftsman made it to my specifications and I picked my wood (maple). The board cost $125.00 and I got it about 3 weeks after I ordered it. When I use it for raw meat I wash with very hot water and a sponge dampened with bleach, rinse it very well and dry it. Every so often I rub beeswax into it and it is quite lovely, a bit heavy, but lovely. Most of the craftsman will make boards to your specs. Good luck!

Hello folks! I live in Prospect Heights and work near Union Square and almost never venture above 14th Street. I emailed Fish Tales and they responded, I will most likely buy my fish from them or now maybe garden of Eden. Thank you everyone for your help!
Gravlax? Where to buy the fresh salmon and your best recipe!
Hello! I am invited to an Xmas diner and I have to bring an appetizing fish and I was thinking of making gravlax. Where can I but the fish (either Brooklyn or Manahattan below 14th Street) and what is your best and simplest recipe? Thanks in advance!
Looking for sour sop, tamarind ice creams (tropical ice cream place?)

Counter depth refrigerator...yes or no?
We bought a counter depth fridge when we renovated our tiny 7x8 kitchen last summer and it made a huge difference. We have the French doors, freezer on the bottom style. The French doors also make a big difference since the door swing is not as wide. I do miss the space, especially in the freezer, I always have stock and bones stored in there which take up alot of space (yes I reduce my stocks). Even with the loss of refrigerator and freezer space, it is still worth it.
Does anyone use slate/tiles as plates?
Someone in my neighborhood (Brownstone Brooklyn) threw out a dozen black granite floor tiles. I put felt feet on them and gave a bunch away as gifts (people love them even though they know they are freecycled) and I use mine as cheese platters. Yes! The knife squeak is annoying, but they look pretty!
Florence - so far.
For food shopping of any kind I would check out the old market. I forget exactly where it is but it is in walking distance of the Duomo. We bought cheeses and meats there daily as snacks, I bought oils and truffle salt as gifts to bring home. Please note, it is not open every day and it closes early.

Sustainable pork in brooklyn?
You could try the Meat Hook in Williamsburg, Flying Pigs at the GAP Greenmarket, The Piggery CSA might be able to help and there is a market in Fort Greene that cures their own meats. The name escapes me... The New Amserdan Market has different vendors every weekend and a few times last season they had a vendor that was selling it. Oh! And possibly reach out the BrooklynCured.com. Good luck!

It is not very artinsinal but it is kinda cool - Junior's sells an Egg Cream Kit, which is a bottle of Foxe's U- Bet and two glasses with the measurment markings. I have sent quite a few of them over the years and people love the.

A Chowhound trying to cook in a "Bachelor's Kitchen"
The first time I tried to cook in my boyfriend's apartment (now husband) was not that bad except for the quality of his pots and pans and knives... They were all paper thin and his knives were all serrated And his pepper! It was one of those plastic pepper shakers! The first gift I gave him was a good ole wooden pepper grinder! He only had vegetable oil and margarine and chili powder for condiments. After that we didi all our cooking here!

Beef stock in a crock pot?
Will it work? I need a hearty beef stock for a dinner I am hosting tomorrow night but I do not want to have to deal with it tomorrow. Can I put it in the crock pot over night? I usually simmer my beef stock for 8 hours. The bones and veggies are happily roasting in my oven now!
