Davorn's Place - Visalia

Had lunch here today based on a high percentage of recommendations from Urban Spoon. Did not disappoint. This is a Lao/Thai cafe and you can get your cravings for pho and pad thai, should you have both at the same time, taken care of in one spot.

Friend and I ordered potstickers (because I ALWAYS have to have potstickers if they are on the menu.) 8 to an order which is a good size for $4. I've had better but these were far from the worst I have ever had. Then we ordered a large pho #18 (rare steak) but asked to add meatballs. Not a problem. They have various phos with various types of meats including tripe and tendon. Since I'm not normally a tripe person, unless its really good menudo, I passed on that combination. A large bowl easily feeds two with leftovers. Broth was very good and garnish plate of basil, jalapenos, lime and bean sprouts was appreciated. Our other entree was the spicy noodles with chicken. You tell them a spicy level of 1-5 (5 is spiciest). I went with 3 and for someone who LOVES spicy food, this was a good heat level. Definitely cleared the sinuses but did not overpower the noodles and the vegetables. Add in a couple of thai iced teas and we had a very enjoyable meal. Service was good and by the time we left place was full. Total for 2 including tip was $35.00. I would definitely recommend it.

Paso Robles help please

I second Bistro Laurent and Thomas Hill. I absolutely refuse t endorse in any way shape or form Artisan given the horrendous experience I had there last time.

Fresno Chowhounds?

Gonna second the Tako truck. The kalbi IS amazing. Food trucks are "finally" here. We now have CartHop (kudos to whoever came up with that name, i think its really clever). Either Tues or Thurs (I think its Tues) there are 4-5 carts on Fulton mall (by the Longs I am told) and on Fridays they are outside of the water tower at Fresno and O streets. Saturday they are at Bella Fruta at Willow and Shepherd. There are usually the same four trucks: Tako, Benediction, Dusty Buns and a desert truck (forgot the name). There is also a new truck called Eat Street that just started and they are at Bella Fruta with the others on Saturdays (full disclosure - I am friends with the chef on that truck).

I-5 Corridor?

Susan,

I had to be in Merced this morning for work but was done by 9:00 a.m. so I went to Cinema Cafe. It reminds me of the small lunch counters we used to have in downtown Fresno. No hiding what you're cooking here as it is basically a small diner. Had the chorizo and eggs and ended up bringing half of it home because the portion was so large. I really liked the atmosphere but it does attract some of Merced's homeless population. None of which bothers me but other people are put off by that. I would definitely go back.

What are you baking these days? New Year 2013 edition! [old]

I bought a box full of Meyer lemons from Costco, so yesterday it was a compilation of a couple of recipes that resulted in
Ginger Macademia Meyer Lemon Bars.

Napa

With thanks to all who replied, the following is a summary of where I ended up. First off, it turns out that when you book a hotel (using airline miles) it would behoove the person making the reservation (me, I confess) to actually double check the location of said hotel. I booked a Doubletree that claims to be in Napa. It may have been in the Napa Valley (very loosely speaking) but Roehnert Park is NOT Napa. The reservation actually claims that it is in Napa, but needless to say, the street the hotel is on is nowhere near Napa.

Because of this (and the hour long drive to and from Napa) we ended up at the following: dinner Friday night was at Redd. Ate mostly at the bar, although when my brother showed up, we did manage to get a table in the restaurant. We had to be in downtown Napa by 8:00 p.m. so we did not do a full on dinner but the pork belly was very good. My brother had a play being produced and because of the length of the drive back we basically called it a night after the production and headed back.

Next morning we had breakfast at the hotel (meh, but it was comped). We visited downtown Calistoga and the farmers market. Picked up some amazing sea salt. Then onto Rombauer. Met my brother there. The assistant manager who was pouring had actually been at the event we had attended the night before. He recognized my friend. He gave us recommendations for three wineries.

We ate at Farmstead while waiting for our Duckhorn reservation. Had the carpaccico which I enjoyed. Duckhorn, I have to say, was a disappointment. Way too commercial for my taste. Not sure exactly why but it left a negative impression and I would not go back.

From there we went to Goosecross which was my favorite of the trip. This had been a recommendation from Rombauer and did not disappoint. Left there with a bottle of Syrah and two chocolate/bacon bars. Thought of eating in downtown Napa but really did not want to do that drive late at night so we drove back to Roehnert Park and had dinner at Hana Sushi.

All in all we had a good time. The only negative was the length of the drive to and from Napa.

Thanks so much. It is appreciated!!! And yes jmendes, I'm always open for winery recs. Again, because I'm from California and we have fairly close access to Paso Robles I am a bit spoiled in terms of wanting low key non-pretentious tasting rooms that serve a good glass of wine. Have done the whole Mondavi, Z, V. Sattui, etc. tours in the past. And while they serve a purpose, I would much rather go to a smaller winery where the tasting experience is friendly and knowledgeable.

Carrie - you had me at bacon in the Bloody Mary - I am definitely there!!!! (If you ever head out to Vegas, I can give you a rec for a really good one out by the Hoover Dam.)

Napa

Going to Napa this Friday. Will be there Fri and Saturday night. Haven't been in a while and always looking for trusted suggestions. Prefer to go to the low key local places that have excellent food but are not over hyped with celebrity chefs. Any and all suggestions welcome. Have done the Oxbow Market and may go again (Hog Island Oyster Bar is amazing), but am curious about other restaurants.

Go to Visalia. Vintage Press is very good.
I would check this board and do a search for threads on Visalia.

Armenian, Mediterranean, Moroccan in Fresno?

There is Basque in Fresno. There is the Landmark in the Tower District (on Olive) which does the merchant's lunch. There is also the Shepherder's Inn ~ right next to the Amtrack station. I am almost sure it is still open. And then there is the Basque Hotel which is just south of Fresno Street near G (it is the block behind The Cosmopolitan). All serve merchant lunches. Shepherder's used to do dinners as well. Not sure if Basque Hotel does or not.

ETA: The place PB was referring to would have been The Shepherder's (or Shepherd, not positive on the spelling)

I-5 Corridor?

Check threads with the following cities: King City, Soledad, Greenfield, Gonzales. There are some good mexican recommendations.

Also there is a good sausage place a few minutes off of 5 at Santa Nella (i.e. Los Banos area) called Wolffson's (I think). If you search "Gustine" you should find a number of threads on it.

Fresno/Clovis Dining

And I'll add one more - it'sa small mexican place called Rancheros at the corner of Perrin and Sommerville (near the Starbucks). Its close to home and although I wasn't impressed the first time or two I went,it definitely grows on you. Offerings are standard mexican fare but the mini mixed fajita plate is pretty darn good. Just a small local place that tends to get overlooked.

Oakhurst for breakfast, Yosemite for lunch, Lee Vining for dinner.

"Going down is like peeling back the tissue wrapping on a gorgeous surprise. Going west to east is like wrapping up the garbage in newspaper and then tossing it away."

LOL - having done the drive many times I will confess that I had never quite thought to articulate it in those images before.

Best lunchtime beer selection in Fresno? Microbreweries?

+1 for Yardhouse for selection - Belgian beer on draft

Check out BC's Pizza in Clovis - right across from the Sierra Vista mall; pizza is pretty good as well

Lotus of Siam too busy? Check out Weera Thai!

My sister in law and I went to Weera last Tuesday and it was awesome. The outstanding dish of the evening was a white fish (I am blanking on the exact type) served in a broth with its own heating element. Many thanks to all the hounds who recommended this place.

This is all good to know. Means when I'm making that "fabulous" drive up or down the 5 or the 405 I can stop in Torrance, Irvine, or Santa Monica. :))

Penzey's in Hillcrest

Oh wow. This makes me really happy and I don't even live in SD anymore!!!

Their spices are top notch and I am really glad they are in CA. (I am thinking they might have a location in the LA area, but just don't remember.) Their customer service is very good. I have been ordering from them on-line for years.

Now if I could only get one in Fresno - LOL.

@glbtrtr - Definitely go see the gardens - I have lived her for 15 years and just got out there last year. It really is amazing. Oh and then since you are here - you will just "have" to go to Trelio. :))

@ Steve - I had not heard of The Schoolhouse so I will need to check that one out

Best wine tasting in vegas

Going for a week in July (right after the 4th). Long long ago went to the wine bar (the cellar?) downstairs at the Rio but don't even know if it is still there.

Where is the best place to go? We will be on the strip but will have a car so can travel.
