Dining in Brooklyn

St. Anselm waits are insane. One option, go early and put your name down and then head over to PIPS for some ping pong up the street (Roebling) or just go to the bar attached next door.

Peter Luger's is totally worth it for visitors. I live in Brooklyn and still go for a meaty treat. Porterhouse only.

Need a restaurant like Osteria Il Paiolo

This is too late for you but personally I think Aurora is way better than Osteria.

Tulum: El Tabano - crazy good!

We loved El Tabano too! I say it's a must-eat. Visited on 1/12/11.

APPS
*chile poblano crepes (muy delicioso!)
*cold avocado, cucumber, mint soup

MAIN
*pork in wine sauce (almost like a tapenade with a bit of spice and peppers)
*grouper in a pumpkin sauce

DESSERT
*Flan (There's no difference between good flan and bad flan" -Wag the Dog)

Total for 2 with drinks was about 720 pesos. Pretty reasonable for dinner on the beach. Usually our bills at other places were 900-1000 pesos. I recommend going into town for 100 peso tacos al pastor at Antojitos La Chiapaneca (end of Avenida Tulum across the street from the subway).

Spanish Churros with Chocolate

I just had some churros with a caramel dulce de leche dipping sauce at Onda and they were delicious!

Bahn Mi in Queens? roosevelt ave?

There's Banh Mi at Pho Bac in what we've unofficially dubbed "Asian Plaza" in Elmhurst. This Asian Plaza mini strip mall hosts Nusura (Thai), Penang (Maylasian), Pho Bac, Pho Bang (yes, two Vietnamese places) and Singha's Pizza, along with a gargantuan Asian supermarket with great greens and bountiful & cheap seafood.

The Banh Mi is so so. Skimpy on the meat and flavor but some banh mi is better than no banh mi in a pinch.

Great BBQ at decent prices. The far-flung location can also make it an adventure on the subway. Although it may be a little more casual than you were looking for...

Getting treated... Chinese in Elmhurst?

I second Nasura in the mini-mall we've dubbed "Asian Plaza." BYOB. The pork jerky is a must. Watch out for the spicy items though - be warned medium is plenty spicy.

82-80 Broadway (Whitney Avenue), Elmhurst, Queens; (718)898-7996.

BEST DISHES Fried pork jerky; tod mun (fried fish cakes); Siam grilled chicken; som tum; whole fried fish (try the chu-chee curry or thai chile sauces); khao mon gai

Although not necessarily near Central Park, there was an article in the New York Times Travel section this week about hot chocolate in NYC.

Shake Shack Limit?

I happened to be in the area and went right at 11am for opening. Best time to go as I was #2 on line. The line was very light for the first 30 minutes.

Outdoor Dining in Brooklyn or Queens?

Quaint serves New American and has a nice garden in back - you can see a photo on their site (News & Review section). It was nominated for Best New Restaurant in Queens in Time Out New York this year.

There are plenty of salads to choose from but not really any good main entrees that are vegetarian-friendly. You should call ahead for seasonal menu or pasta specials of the day.

5th Anniversary - 4 nights in NYC

Chickalicious would be perfect after Sat dinner: Momofuku Ssam since you'll be close by and Ssam does not offer any coffee/tea or desserts besides mochi.
