Best Barcelona Food Neighborhood
The Eixempla is a good neighborhood if you want to dress up and pay a lot of money for very good food, but I really love the atmosphere of Riberta/El Born. It used to be just a lot of bars, but it is my favorite eating neighborhood. Fancy? Got it. Noisy bar with great food? Yup. Late night snacks? Pues claro! Fabulous take-out? Of course! And it's an ever-changing, always vibrant neighborhood. If you're not a vegetarian, go to Set de Born for jamon de bellota that will make you swoon.
Vegetarian in Barcelona
You should try any of the Origens restaurants. I like the one in Gracia, but they're pretty consistent from one to another. They cook only Catalan seasonal regional specialties and have a wide selection of excellent vegetarian tapas, main courses, and sweets.
day trip out of Barcelona
Girona is an excellent idea, but you might also go south to Tarragona. Just south of the train station there's a good seafood restaurant, l'Ancora, that's not fancy but always very good. Tarragona is a small city with superb Roman archaeologicall sites within walking distance of l'Ancora.
Calcots
I'd try a small, as in skinny, leek. A scallion is too small and the romesco would overwhelm it when it's grilled.
